When Tertia read about the college student who was planning to be a doctor, she said, "Well, I sure hope he's planning to be a psychiatrist," even though what she read said nothing about psychiatry or any other branch of medicine. How come? |

Did she think that as a joke? as a play on a word or phrase used to describe him? Did she think he was particularly suited to being a psychiatrist? or particularly UNsuited to becoming any other type of doctor? As a wild guess, is it something like he said that he wanted to "change minds" as a doctor, meaning of course he wanted to convince people of his opinions, but you thought that as a psychiatrist he could do so literally? |

is his surname relevant? something that would put patients off? does he behave in a way that would be unsuitable for a doctor? the relevant thing that he would be unsuitable for: using needles? using surgical implements? using diagnostic equipment of any sort? physically examining a patient? working at night? working under pressure? working in a team? working with nurses? using radiological equipment? interpreting physical signs of a patient? did Tertia fully understand the role of a psychiatrist? that they examine patients? that they prescribe for patients? might she just as easily have said she hoped he would become another type of doctor? some other type that has little patients contact? does he have a relevant physical attribute? a medical condition? a disability? a tremor? one hand? did she think, if he was a regular doctor, his patients would be in physical danger? be unhappy? be poorly diagnosed? poorly treated? would die? |

So, was it a plain interview, or an article where he was quoted saying the relevant part? If the latter, was it an article about people attending that specific college? About Vladimir in particular? About black young men in general? Another line: was it an article? an advertisement? just a quote used as some kind of a motto for an article? Other than mentioning he attended a black college, did Vladimir say something of relevance related to black people? To medicine? Did he say something like "I want to heal people" but it was obvious from the context that he at best could end up only as a psychiatrist (as opposed to a surgeon, for example)? The relevant text that he said: a word? an expression? a phrase? a paragraph? longer? I think that has been answered earlier, but I would like to be sure: all circumstances being similar (mutatis mutandis), could you derive the same reasoning for a white man as opposed to a black one? If not, is this related to social status? Public perception of black people? (Provided this might the case there, I might be off track here not seeing a black man 'live' before reaching my 20s) |

A short recap -- two sentences as a motto for an advertisement: our fellow was quoted there. Was it an advertisement for the college? Tertia was sarcastic about that (or semi - sarcastic): did she know about that college from previous sources? I mean, something along the lines of 'yeah right, from that poor college you can only end up as a psychiatrist at the most'? Is the location of college relevant? Again using an example, midtown Manhattan as opposed to -- you name a village in the middle of nowhere? For the clothing, I am no expert at this. Please write on the email -- that is on the profile page -- and some authentic pieces might came up :=) |

Tertia's remark was prompted by: something written in the ad? The relevant picture? A combination of both? Was there a contradiction between the text and the picture? HINT: There is condition that is a lot more common among blacks than among whites in America & that is the most relevant thing about Vladimir. Find out what this condition is. RECAP: Add the following to the puzzle description. Vladimir is a student at a black college & he is quoted in an ad that includes a picture but not a picture of him. (The student in the puzzle statement was Tertia, but somehow she turned into Vladimir--from which you can infer that the student's gender is irrel.) |

Was the advertised financial aid (in Tertia's opinion): too small? too big? Did she think specifically of a psychiatrist or just that with that kind of help he is bound to end up in a psychiatric hospital (maybe as a patient)? Is medical school directly relevant to the puzzle beyond the fact that med school in general is expensive? Does the poster mention where the student plans to go to medical school? If so, is it an even-more-expensive than usual school? Or one that is notorious for giving very little financial aid? Or, is there something special about the psychiatry department at a specific medical school? |

I don't know if this has been established yet, but as far as I can see it hasn't: Would him being a psychologist be just as consistent with the ad? If not, is it merely because psychologists are not medical doctors? or is there a reason more inherent to the type of work done by each? |

RECAP: Add the following to the puzzle statement: There is a picture of his mother scrubbing a floor & here's a HINT: The ad says, "My mother is scrubbing floors so I can be a doctor. Give to the United Negro College Fund."So why does Tertia hope he's planning to be a psychiatrist? so there is a picture of him with his mum? noand she is shown doing cleaning work? yes and she is saying something? no he is? yes there is a slogan?yope and is the meaning of the words basically that she is doing manual work so that he doesn't have to? yesish or do the words imply that when he becomes a doctor she won't have to work like that any more? yopeor that he will be able to 'pay her back' in some way? no or make her work 'worthwhile'? no |

I really don't get what it is we are working towards here - other than the idea that he is somehow perceived to be saying 'my mother does manual work so I won't have to' - and that made Tertia think that he obviously doesn't realise that medicine is a 'hands on' job, with the possible exception of psychiatry (although that's not actually true!) Is there something else to get?? |

Does she think that his mother will need a psychiatrist after doing all that work? That he should be working to pay for college? |

Yes!! At last, here's the ********** SPOILER ************* When Tertia, who is this forum's own Felicia Nimue, saw the ad from the United Negro College Fund with a picture of an exhausted-looking middle aged black woman scrubbing a floor & the caption, "My mother is scrubbing floors so I can be a doctor. Give to the United Negro College Fund." she said to herself, "Well, I sure hope he's planning to be a psychiatrist, because if he has the use of his hands, he's the one who should be scrubbing floors." After all, whose education is it, anyway? Of course, I realize that parents have to make sacrifices for children who are too young to take care of themselves, but once Vladimir is an able-bodied young adult, why is his mother scrubbing floors to finance his education, rather than her own? Thanks for sticking with it, everyone & for solving it, Balin. You all know where my new puzzle is! |

What I really don't understand is parents who sacrifice to send their kids to graduate or professional school. Undergrad, I kind of understand. But I have a grad school colleague who said she "decided to go to grad school in state to save [her] parents some money" (after she had gone to undergrad out of state). Seriously? I do understand supporting your children, but I never imagined parents would actually pay for their kids' grad school! Ok, end rant. Good puzzle. |

I agree with the rant, unless the parents are so rich they wouldn't miss the money they send to their grad school "child." |
