We saw one, and thought that alone was a disaster. But they were unconcerned, and even told us there was another one just like it. |

Should we be focusing on a specific part of the plane? If so, propeller? Fuselage? Fuel source? Wings? Tail? Or is this about the plane as a whole? |

So... "We saw one," (the engine) "and thought that alone was a disaster." (it looked crappy/damaged) "But they were unconcerned, and even told us there was another one just like it." (the engine was supposed to look this way, and they had another engine that was the same) This right? |

Was there something you saw on the engine, something that can vaguely be described as part of it, that made you believe the engine was damaged? |

Was there something you saw on the engine, something that can vaguely be described as part of it, that made you believe the engine was damaged? Yes - we looked at a part of the engine, saw "something", and thought it was damaged. But we were told it wasn't a problem, and that there was another "something" as well. |

Did the other "something" appear damaged? The other part appeared damaged. The "something" is the damage itself, which is youpishly a tangible object. Was the other "something" actually damaged? No. Or did it prove that there was no damage? Sort of, if we'd seen both the somethings, we probably would've concluded that everything was okay. |

So is it a turboprop engine? Other type of turbo engine? (My knowledge of airplane engines is minimal at best, nonexistent at worst.) |

So is it a turboprop engine? This. Other type of turbo engine? Seeing the "something" in an unexpected place would cause concern for any engine. we were looking at the inside of the compressor stages of the turbine. |

Broken? Cracked? This. ***SPOILER*** One of our less experienced pilots heard a strange sound on takeoff, and thought something was wrong with the plane. while looking around the engine, he noticed a millimeter-wide crack in the housing for the compressor stage (the intake part of the turbine). Now, a cracked turbine would be a disaster, and he worriedly called the manufacturer to tell them about it. The manufacturer however was unconcerned, and wondered if he didn't see the other crack as well - turns out this part of the engine is made from two half tubes clamped together, with a crack in between. The other crack was indeed visible, but only from an awkward angle. Another time, another pilot experienced the same noise on takeoff - and to make it stop he hit one of the cabin air vents with his fist. Turns out it comes loose now and then and starts to rattle, and is no cause for real concern at all. |
