So was it an episode of a cartoon series? not really. there were a small number of animated (short films is still the closest description) based on the same set of stories. I would NOT call it an episode or part of a series, though. Like Flinstones/Jetsons? Was it a Hannah Barbara cartoon? Tex Avery? no to all you might try forgetting about what the relevant film-ish thing is and attack the puzzle from a different angle. Some of the questions you asked before getting diverted by the film(ish) are a good start |

Is the relevant Charlie Brown movie related to a holiday? yes Maybe It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown? yes -- as far as I know, that's the only one with an imaginary plant in it...=) I believe Linus mentioned the Great Pumpkin as something you're not supposed to discuss with adults/others...and the other two were religion and politics? yes, exactly Well, Balin has not only figured out the relevant television special, but also leaped ahead to put it together with the puzzle statement. Guess that means it's time for a ***SPOILER*** In the Peanuts comic strip and the tv special "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown," the Great Pumpkin is an imaginary being (from Linus's imagination) that supposedly brings presents on Halloween to the "most sincere" pumpkin patch. Linus (from Peanuts) spends every Halloween waiting in a Pumpkin patch, hoping that the Great Pumpkin chooses Linus's patch. While Linus occasionally manages to convince a friend to wait with him in the patch, no one else actually believes in the Great Pumpkin, so Linus endures considerable ridicule for his steadfast belief. The best-known quote regarding Linus and the Great Pumpkin is "There are three things I have learned never to discuss with people: religion, politics, and the Great Pumpkin." I misjudged the timing of this one a little, so HAPPY (EARLY) HALLOWEEN! I'm often amazed at just how differently puzzles play out on the forum than I imagine they will. For this one, you started out exactly as I expected, when the very first question was about things that are taboo to talk about. But then I expected you to struggle for a while with the taboo idea until you realized that it was only one person who wouldn't talk about the thing, then figure out who that person was, and then figure out what the thing was that he wouldn't talk about. I did NOT expect you to get to the answer by struggling to figure out a relevant film-ish thing and an imaginary plant! I guess I never cease to be utterly surprised by the path these puzzles can take! |
