Was it Google Translator? And you got a very awful translation? And "understood it" was part thereof? And you thought that the translator couldn't have understood the text to be translated because the result was to messed up? |

Alternative: Did you perform a Google search and the results didn't match your query at all? Because Google assumed you made a typo or something and suggested its own search terms? And "understood it" turned up somewhere in the results? |

Was it Google Translator? YES! And you got a very awful translation? Well, I'd rather say funny or ridiculous than awful :-) And "understood it" was part thereof? Not a part of it, ALL of it And you thought that the translator couldn't have understood the text to be translated because the result was to messed up? More or less so Alternative: Did you perform a Google search and the results didn't match your query at all? Because Google assumed you made a typo or something and suggested its own search terms? And "understood it" turned up somewhere in the results? So no to this alternative idea. You're almost there, but there's one more step I'd like you to find out, because it turns out to be the funniest point of all the story :-) In the meanwhile, here's a RECAP: I needed to translate something to English, I used Google translator (bad idea, I know, but this was 5-6 years ago, at the beginning of automatic translators), and it suggested me the answer "understood it", which was clearly totally false and unacceptable, and made me think "I really don't think so". Now why the answer could clearly not be correct? |

Was the original text much longer to be translated by just two words? Were neither "understood" nor "it" part of the original text (well, the according words in the foreign language, of course)? Was the original text written in a language that the translator actually wasn't supposed to know? |

Oh, and this one happens to me a lot of times when use it: Did you expect a certain word to turn up in the translation, such as a name? And the translator assumed that said name was in fact the word for "understood" or "it"? |

Incidentally, just checking the google translator now, "capito lo" gets "understood the" which is somehow logical |

I'll skip Potato's questions because Rbruma got all of it :-) Did you try to translate 'capitolo' (as per the title) and the translator got "l'ho capito" or something like this? EXACTLY SO! This happened to me many years ago, I was looking for the English translation of the Italian word "capitolo" (= chapter, hence the puzzle title), and Google gave me the translation of "capito lo" (Understood = capito, it = lo, more or less), which was clearly wrong, and I'd say quite ridiculous too :-) Luckily enough, performances of automatic translators have made huge steps since... I tried it now, just for fun, and it returns the right translation, "chapter". Btw I don't use google translator any more since a long time... when I have difficulties with English (which happens quite often here on LTPF :-P) I use wordreference.com, very complete and precise! Oh, and of course that's the SPOILER! Kudos to Balin, Galfisk and Woodworm for the ground work, Potato for the decisive idea, and Rbruma for the final solve! |

Nice one! There's so much fun to be had with automatic translators, especially if you go language to language to language. It always comes out hilarious. |
