Now that my two puzzles are solved, here I go again. I don't know whether to be happy or sad at what I've been hearing today. They always seemed to do well enough before without changing things. |

Now, that would be too predictable, wouldn't it? No, the Giants are doing perfectly fine at the moment; they beat the Rangers by four runs last night. Let's hope they can keep up the trend. :-) |

In that case... "They" = H? A? M? Changing things - rules? Something about themselves? |

In that case... "They" = H? A? M? 2 H/A/M, 1 H/A/F. Changing things - rules? Mmm...more like they possibly changed the something because of "rules". Something about themselves? Not about themselves per se... |

HINT to clear up possible FA (or prevent it) : The thing I'm listening to isn't a news story or anything like that. It's a song which has been altered from its original form. |

Censorship relevant? Not censorship, but... Music genre? I wouldn't know what to call it, but the group is relevant. Is Tolkien relevant? No, unfortunately. |

A mondegreen? No, I heard them correctly. A simplified version? Not simplified. A remix? Well, they added a couple of words. Why would they do that? |

Are they a rock group? Country? Jazz? None. ...Are they still around today? The H/A/F has, sadly, died. The H/A/M's are still alive. But they had broken up a while ago, though they joined for a reunion at some point. |

Did they add words...because of an event? An important one? That happened after the original song was written? 9/11? |

For the sake of politically correct, gender-neutral language: He or she loves you, yeah yeah yeah. And I love him, or her. He or she is a real nowhere person. I am the bull or cow walrus, goo goo ga joob. |

Did they add words...because of an event? An important one? That happened after the original song was written? 9/11? Mot this, Woodworm's got the idea, though, Balin. For the sake of politically correct, gender-neutral language: Apparently so! He or she loves you, yeah yeah yeah. And I love him, or her. He or she is a real nowhere person. I am the bull or cow walrus, goo goo ga joob Though not these, LOL. Ok, so the so far not figured out 60's group, consisting of two H/A/M's and one H/A/F, added a couple of words to one of their most famous songs for at least one performance, (which I found on YouTube, by the way) to make it politically correct in a gender-related way. So, who are they and what song was it? (Remember, their number's down by one now, and Google and Wikipedia are your friends) |

Yes, I am overlooking the obvious. Have you noticed how often I do that? Too much, but don't worry, Matt, we still love you. :-D Puff the Magic Dragon? Yes indeed. In this rendition of the song, Peter, Paul and Mary add the words "little girls" to the line "A dragon lives forever, but not so little boys" so now it's "A dragon lives forever, but not so little girls and little boys". It throws the meter off, and I wonder what PC police came down on them... Oh yeah, ***SPOILER***. Good work, Balin and Woodworm! |

Whoops - crossed on the $poyler. And the recording which I always listened to included the "girls and" words, so that's what I'm used to hearing. Nice one! |

Aaah, brief but beautiful. What's especially bizarre is that the song is obviously about dope-smoking. Isn't it? I seem to remember that it was banned over here at some point, partly because of that, and partly because 'puff' sounded too much like the offensive word 'poof'. I imagine that the Rolf Harris classic 'Two little boys' [had two little toys] might need significant reworking. Nice puzzle, thank you. |

I seem to remember that it was banned over here at some point, partly because of that, and partly because 'puff' sounded too much like the offensive word 'poof'. Oh, for crying out loud, not that legend again. *sigh* Peter Yarrow said (and he ought to know, he wrote it) that it was about the loss of childhood innocence, and that is all. Period. Of course, people come up with their own interpretations, but it was not his intention. Here, listen to him yourself. I imagine that the Rolf Harris classic 'Two little boys' [had two little toys] might need significant reworking. I don't know that one. Nice puzzle, thank you. You are very welcome |

Ah Balin, you innocent thing. I suppose you have also heard the stories behind Rainy Day Women nos. 12 & 35 and Lucy In The Sky? Don't believe them! They were, ahem, smokescreens for the conservative meeja. And Mr Mojo Risin' was an anagram of Jim Morrison. Which of course it was, but also ... :-) |

Not the first two, but yes to Lucy. Haven't actually heard that song though, so haven't made up my mind on that one. I did know about the Morrison anagram, but I haven't heard that one either. However, I can guess your implication by the title. And I'm not sure what it was like in the '60s, but right now, the media is very liberal. Except for FOX News, which is extremely conservative. Whatever happened to actually reporting the news...? *sigh* |

Well, I bow to your superior knowledge of magic dragons, O Tolkien-lovers. But I must register a slight disappointment that my childhood heroes were not what they were cracked up to be. The Soup Dragon, The Magic Roundabout, featuring Dylan the permanently stoned rabbit ... what next? This is quite a loss of innocence for me ;-) |

If I could jump in here I must side with Woodworm on this point. Of course composers can wax lyrical about deep meaning of songs to satisfy the media of the time but I have no doubt that Puff , Lucy , Hey Jude , Golden Brown by the stranglers etc are all about drugs pure and simple. With regard to The Magic Roundabout the programme is laced with drug references. Dougal the dog constantly seeks "sugar" lumps and Ermitrude the cow has a poppy in her mouth. And the less said about Zebedee the better. Boingggg. And Kaylee I agree with you . If it aint broke don't fix it. Nice puzzle btw sorry I missed it. |
