Is the word "trombone" relevant? It will be, later in the puzzle. However the thing that it is a musical intrument is relevant The shape of a trombone? A drawing or other depiction of a trombone? No to the rest Is it anything like saying, "This is not my first rodeo?" No, but nice thinking HINT: This is a sort of a connection-type puzzle, only much shorter and expressed in a 'classical' format |

No, but an idiom like the one above is the key to this puzle, though I think that we have to work a little more for it to become apparent |

Playing it exceptionally well? How well is not relevant, but we might assume a good play No to the rest. Exceptionally poorly? Playing a certain note relevant? A certain piece? Second string? No We are looking for a violin that it is 'second' something. It has to do with playing it. The answer should be a well known expression |

Second fiddle? "playing second fiddle" is an expression... It might be, but it is not the answer Second-hand? As in, used? Playing a new tune on a used something? No to all Knowing very little about instruments, I have to couch this question in vocal terms--second clef or a step down from the highest? Like a second soprano? No instrument knowledge is required. Violin is the only one that matters, and playing this instrument is basically what interests us. A few more basic questions might be of help. We are almost there, since the word violin is part of the expression... |

Second time? Second chance? No to both. Time is somehow laterally related. I think a RECAP might be usefull, as well as a BLOOPER We are trying to find a certain expression which contains yopishly (that was the blooper) the word 'violin'. The expression is related to second something, which is not a tangible object and which laterally relates to time |

Playing a fiddle to a water buffalo? No. It is a more common one (I think) and doesn't have a verb.... It's simply a description of activities that for example both you and I have done -- and a lot of others, for sure And the violin is yopishly in the expression itself. No other instrument is relevant.

le violon d'ingres? Exactly! au violon? ****** SPOILER ****** The "violon d'Ingres" is a common expression for one's second 'profession' or one's hobby. It can be posting on the LTPF itself. It is named of course after the leading French painter Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres. To quote wikipedia directly : "Ingres's well-known passion for playing the violin gave to the French language a colloquialism, "violon d'Ingres", meaning a second skill beyond the one by which a person is mainly known. The American avant-garde artist Man Ray used this expression as the title of a famous photograph portraying Alice Prin (aka Kiki de Montparnasse) in the pose of the Valpinçon Bather." This should also explain the title. The idea of the puzzle came while talking to a friend about Woodworm's 'last trombone' puzzle. Trombone and violon rhymes around here, so a puzzle could be framed. Thanks go to Matt for a quick solve. |
