As most of you know, UConn's football team has experienced a new success the last few years, culminating by their first BCS appearance. However, much of this success has come at the expense of the men's ice hockey team. Why? |

Have more people started following/joining/attempting to join the football team? Instead of the hockey team? Are their fewer hockey players? Fewer fans? |

Is this to do with the: football team members? Yope ice hockey team members? ,b> Yope </b> football ground? To some extent hockey pitch? It's called a "rink" and no. coaches or managers? Somewhat for both, though more so for football. fans? No money? Yes, with a slight ish TV? No But all the affirmative answers above (or at least the ones relating to football) could mislead. mascots for either team? are any of the ice hockey and football team members the same, playing on both teams? are any of the coaches common to both teams? No to all. Have more people started following/joining/attempting to join the football team? Instead of the hockey team? Are their fewer hockey players? Fewer fans? The only relevant aspect is that the football team has more players. But this could mislead as well. |

Just to clarify for those Brits, we're talking American football here. Not what we call soccer. Although if you're not from America this probably won't help you much anyway. |

Does the hockey team have worse players? Yes, see below Has its size been decreasing over the past few years? No, see below. Are scholarships relevant? Yes, definitely. Coach's bonuses? No Financial support from the alumni association? Possibly, but it's not the reason I'm trying to get at in this puzzle. So for this puzzle, no. |

Because the football team is doing well, the hockey team gets fewer scholarships? And this is hurting their play on the ice? Or they're getting fewer scholarships because they play less well? |

Does UConn have a specific limit to the number of sports scholarships it can give? If not an overall limit, is there a limit specifically for men's sports? If so, is it budget related? Rules related? |

Does UConn have a specific limit to the number of sports scholarships it can give? Well, they can only afford so many, but that's not the whole story. If not an overall limit, is there a limit specifically for men's sports? You're OTRT, but again, not quite If so, is it budget related? Rules related? Both, though "rules" may not be the best term. |

Can they only give X amount in scholarship money? And with the football team's success, more of that is going towards football than ice hockey? Not quite, but you're on the right track. And remember, the extra scholarships caused the football team's success. And as a hint, consider the recent history of the UConn football program. |

Is there a women's ice hockey team? Yes Relevant? I believe it is quite relevant. However, I am not certain that this relevance is for the reason I think it is. Is a specific women's sport relevant? Or simply women's sports in general? A couple specific women's sports are relevant. However, knowing what sports these are won't help you unless you actually know the fact you need already. So don't bother with that. And women's sports in general are more relevant. |

Does the WIHT get more scholarship money than ordinarily? Due to Title IX? The women's ice hockey team is largely irrelevant here. We are focusing on the Men's Ice Hockey Team. But you're quite OTRT. If you know some relatively recent history of the UConn football program it will help you greatly here |

Did the football program get lots of scholarship funding in that time period? They received many additional scholarships in 2000. This is the relevant part as it relates to the hockey team (for the record this is when they upgraded from I-AA to I-A.) You have one step left. |

Did the football team get more scholarships because they moved up? Did the school have to give the football team more scholarships in order to move up? Precisely. And the hockey team is getting less (none, actually.) This isn't as far as I wanted, but since we've accomplished nothing for the last 10 posts, I'm just going to go a head and ****SPOILER**** When the football team upgrated from I-AA to I-A, they needed more scholarships. The school had the money to do that, but due to Title IX they would need to add the equivalent of about 30 full scholarships in women's sports, which they could not afford to do. So, they made men's ice hockey non-scholarship, and I believe they also added women's ice hockey and lacrosse as as a result (both scholarship, though not full rides for most players). Good job to everyone who played. You had all the pieces there, and I was hoping you'd make the last connection, but it wasn't happening. |

I just hope that each team shows up with it's best effort today. I don't want this one decided by questionable referree calls! **And...because of your slam, I will no longer feel sorry that the UConn women's basketball streak is over! Meh!!*** |

FYI: I shared this UConn scholarships story with family members last night while we were watching the game. I have been married to a true sports-fanatic for over 20 years - so it was nice to have something that he didn't already know! The Husky's played very well last night. I was impressed that they didn't give up - kept fighting until the end. Makes for an exciting game. Truce? |
