Is it relevant what the different name was? yes, but not the exact name What's left to find out? Puzzle statement: She broke his heart. Recap: When I was about 5, I disappointed my father by insisting he couldn't call me a certain name anymore, which meant he had to call me by my real name If she hadn't been exactly who she was in one regard, she wouldn't have been able to. You're very OTRT on this part, but not all the way there yet But because she did, she defeated the purpose of being who she was. Explain this. |

No Was it your mother who named you? No Someone else? yes The different name - is it the name of some other relevant person? No Your mother? No Is the different name a female name? yope Is the name you asked your father not to call you a nickname? yes Something that isn't a name, yope name but that he calls you out of affection? yes, but it isn't the type of name that implies affection (My father referred to me as "doodlebug", when I was a little girl. It irritated me, lol. Thankfully, he stopped.) cute! But I can see how that would have become irritating at a certain age. But the nickname in this puzzle isn't a cute one like that. |

Did anyone else call you by this name? My mom did. But irrel. Begin to call you by this name? And so it got old quick? no to rest I feel like a RECAP is in order: When I was about 5, I disappointed my father by insisting he couldn't call me a certain name anymore, which meant he had to call me by my real name. Nothing about me is relevant but my name, including the nickname my father called me. Something else is relevant about my father. My real name had no special meaning to my father, but my father had not wanted me to be named a different name. My mother did not name me, someone else did. The nickname my father called me is yope-ishly a female name. It is not a cute name or a name with any special meaning; my father just liked it. The nickname became offensive to me suddenly, not gradually. |

Did the nickname rhyme? "Care Bear"? no to both. It may help to completely forget that I am female for this step, to get you away from the cutesy, feminine names and broaden your horizons. Imagine that I was a boy, even. What is one of the most common things to call a boy, involving part of his name, besides his actual first name? |

Er...well, the only boy who's been fairly constant in my life is my cousin Paul Junior, aka P.J., so anything relevant there? first initial-J, for "Junior"? (On a relevantish note, my great-grandmother called my grandfather "Junior" pretty much up until she and my great-grandfather died. My mother's impression of this is hysterical...to approximate, if any of you have had the luck to watch the old tv show "Bewitched", remember Mrs. Kravitz screaming for her husband every time something funny happened at Darrin and Samantha's house and she saw it. "ABNER!!!" Now, replace that with "JUNIOR!!!" in just about the same tone. *falls over laughing*) |

So it was "C-"something? yes C-Dog? no CJ? yes But the J didn't stand for Junior? Was it for your middle name? yes Whew! Ok, so add to the recap that the name my father called me was C.J., after my first and middle initials. If you're not sure where to go next, I suggest that you take a good look at the recap. You guys have asked some very important questions along the way, and then promptly forgot about them after I answered them. |

Did you meet someone else name CJ? yes Is anyone else named CJ relevant? yes Correction/Caveat: while this other CJ is part of the back story, which you are welcome to try to figure out, it is not necessary for solving the puzzle. All you absolutely have to do is explain the puzzle statement, and you don't need to know any more about why the name CJ offended me for me to consider the puzzle solved. You've already figured out the relevant details about the nickname. So you're welcome to continue digging along this line, and I'll continue to answer questions about it, but it won't get you closer to the solution. So I guess the answer to "Is anyone else named CJ relevant" probably should have been "yes, but only tangentially" or something like that. |

And he didn't react well, apparently...is how he reacted all that's left to find out? no. You already know all you need to know about how he reacted, which is disappointed. All you have left to do is explain the puzzle statement. Most of the work you have left is on the third part. You've already scratched the surface of it in a line of questioning that was started but then abandoned. |

"She broke his heart." ~ you, Noel, disappointed your father by not wanting to be called C.J., which is a boy's name (or looks like one). well, it's not a boy's name, but I thought it was because I met another CJ who was a boy. "If she hadn't been exactly who she was in one regard, she wouldn't have been able to." ~ If you weren't his daughter, he wouldn't have cared what you thought of the nickname no. I mean, that's true, but me being his daughter is not what this part refers to. "But because she did, she defeated the purpose of being who she was." ~...? Hmm... hmm indeed. and now we reach the lateral part of the puzzle... |

updated puzzle statement: When I was 5, I strongly disappointed my father by telling him he couldn't call me his preferred nickname for me, which was simply my first and middle initials. If I hadn't had my name, then I couldn't have disappointed him in that way. *But because I did, I defeated the purpose of being who I was.* explain the starred part, and you've got it solved. The starred part is what I would consider to be the lateral part. Updated RECAP: The updated puzzle statement plus: Nothing is relevant about me except my name/nickname. Something else is relevant about my father. My real name had no special meaning to my father, but my father had not wanted me to be named a different name. My mother did not name me, someone else did. (Also known, but irrelevant: the reason I refused to be called CJ anymore was because a new boy came to school with the name CJ, so I thought it was a boy's name. My parents were the only people to call me CJ, and it was only occasionally/affectionately.) |

Was it because of the person who named you?" "But because I did"--did have that particular name? or did refuse to be called by your initials? You defeated the "purpose" of having that name (i.e., the intent of the person who named you)? or the purpose of caring about what name or nickname you were called? Both are unclear from the way the starred statement reads. And to clarify something else--your father was disappointed because he could not use "CJ" anymore? or because he had to say your real name instead? |

(i.e. let's say your father's brother, your natural uncle, married your mother's sister, your natural aunt, and then they would be both your natural relatives and in-laws to each other. Or it could be father's sister/mother's brother, as well. By the way, when one set of siblings marries another set of siblings, their children are double first cousins to each other. And when one set of identical twins marries a second set of identical twins, their children are as genetically related as full siblings...*pauses and looks around* Me? Genealogy freak? So did he choose your first and middle names simply so that your initials would be CJ? so he could call you that? YES!!! Whew, it's finally time for the ***SPOILER**** When I was young, my parents called me CJ as an affectionate nickname. But during Kindergarten, a new boy moved to school who went by CJ. I went home, and insisted that my parents couldn't call me CJ anymore, because it was a boy's name. My father was very sad and disappointed about this, but I held firm. Years later, I found out that the reason he was so disappointed was that he had been the one to name me, and he chose my name for the sole reason that he had always wanted to have a child he could call CJ. My real first and last names had absolutely no meaning to him, even though he had chosen them. BTW, I remained steadfast about prohibiting the use of CJ throughout elementary school (and I think even into middle school). But sometime in high school, CJ started creeping back into usage by both of my parents (especially my dad), and this time I embraced it, even to the point that it's now often the name I use for video games as well as the way I sign most emails I send to my family. So I guess there's a happy ending =). Thank you to everyone who stuck with this, and thanks especially to Biograd for putting this puzzle out of its misery! |
