If Nila's parents were not small-town conservatives who interacted almost exclusively with other conservatives, they would not have realized that Nila was a lesbian. Anti-gay stereotypes are not involved. How come? |

Nila - a child? A teenager? An adult? So her parents did realize she was a lesbian, correct? Is school relevant? Religious beliefs? Political beliefs? |

Did they realize Nila is lesbian entirely by themselves or was it suggested by someone else? They realized it because of something that happened? Or because of something that has been said? |

Did Nila move out from her parents before the incident? or after it? Did conservative views of Nila's parents change after incident? Which features of small towns are relevant to the puzzle: people know each other? narrower opportunities of education and work? special mentality? conservativeness? other? The incident happened: on holidays? on shopping excursion? while parents visited Nila at school in the other city? |

Nola, who is a real person, is a politically active open lesbian who was in the closet only with respect to her conservative, small-town parents. Since they lived far away & this was before the Internet, she figured they would not find out. When they came to visit, she removed all the gay rights posters from her home--except one, which she overlooked. When the real Nola told me this was how her parents found out, I was bewildered. My parents would never think that having a gay rights poster meant that someone was gay! Please see my new puzzle! |
