This is a camouflaged rulebreaker, in that it's a rulebreaker passed off as a normal puzzle. Ask questions like you might ask for a normal puzzle, but don't expect normal answers. The goal is to figure out the rule. This is also a CA rulebreaker, by the way, but if you ask complete questions that shouldn't come into play. Why did Kurt spend his lifetime trying to avoid Leonard? |

A CA rulebreaker means the answer sometimes can't be given, as the rule won't allow it...so the only possible answer is "CA", "can't answer". Are they dead? |

Is the world a stage? CA Are all the men and women merely players? no Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player That struts and frets his hour upon the stage, And then is heard no more. It is a tale Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, Signifying nothing. --Macbeth, Act V, Scene V That's not relevant; I just had the urge to quote it for some reason. |

My mistress' eyes are nothing like the sun? Coral is far more red than her lips' red? If snow be white, why then her breasts are dun? If hairs be wires, black wires grow on her head? I have seen roses damask, red and white? But no such roses see I in her cheeks? And in some perfumes is there more delight? Than in the breath that from my mistress reeks? I love to hear her speak, yet well I know? That music hath a far more pleasing sound? I grant I never saw a goddess go? My mistress, when she walks, treads on the ground? And yet, by heaven, I think my love as rare? As any she belied with false compare? –William Shakespeare, Sonnet 130 "Bite me, alien boy!" (lol, sorry...) |

Is the order of the words in the post relevant? [man, this is a tough rule...] order is not relevant, except for the fact that if the words form a coherent sentence, each word will be assessed based on how it is used in the sentence; mostly, you can just focus on individual words |

Nonsingle? no Dead? no All? no Outside? no White? no Warm? no Uncool? no Asking for cool as in temperature and as in popular. Would cool be yes for both meanings? "cool" as in "not warm" would be a "no," "cool" as in "popular" would be a "yes" ("popular" itself I'm not so sure about) light? no nonelephantine? no male? yes enslaved? no bad? no five? no -- no other number spelled out is a Yes AFAIK sad? yes she? yes miserable? no normal? yes Follow? CA -- the proper opposite was "following," which is a Yes here, but would be a No if you asked it instead of "follow" female? yes calm? yes less? no young? no displeasing? no irrelevant? no unreliable? no junior? no sun? no he? yes none? no quiet? yes, but this may mislead -- in fact I'm reconsidering my saying yes to "sound" unspoken? no wild? no pretty? no unverifiable? no normal? yes One? no living? yes space? yes cold? no popular? yes, I think womanly? yes Feminine? yes Liberated? no, and I can't remember why I said Yes to "free" earlier -- I can justify it, though, and this is still a No Nice? yes Awesome? no Cuatro? no Quad? yes, and this should be a BIG HINT Jubilant? yes Joyous? yes Felicitous? yes Manly? yes Masculine? yes weird? yes Bizarre? yes Strange? no Alien? yes, I think herd? no direct? yes dramatic? yes Exaggerating? no Hyperbolizing? yes, I think Greater? no Elderly? yes Ancient? no, at least I think not -- depends on your POV Pleasureful? yes Trusty? yes Trustworthy? yes Noise? yes Contained? yes Controlled? yes Repulsive? yes Pitiful? no True? I really can't answer this, but at the same time this isn't a CA; this is another hint Loco? yes Crazy? no Insane? no Wait... You said "no" to "Whirligig?". But that's a name, not a word. I beg to differ ... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whirligig Also: Since this is a hard puzzle, any following questions may not be answered with a straight Yes or No; I might say e.g. "not in this context" or "sometimes," etc. in order to give you more of a hint. |

Can you please recap what is known about the rule? It only involves the meanings of words. Anything except nouns, adjectives except articles, and pronouns becomes a CA. If there's anything I'm forgetting, let me know. Zany? yes Qiviut? no Xenon? no Jukebox? no Karaoke? no Beer? Vodka? Gin? Tonic? Pot? Weed? Marijuana? Antidisestablishmantarianism? (Assuming I spelled that right) you didn't (the a is an e) Democracy? Republic? Socialism? Communism? Socialist? Communist? Liberal? Conservative? Libertarian? Anarchist? Rent? no to this and all unanswered ones above Is? CA Too? CA Damn? CA High? no Party? no Member? no Neo-Nazi? no Racist? no Rapist? no Rape? no Drape? no Murder? no Robbery? no Assault? no Battery? ... Einsteinium? Nobelium? Praseodymium? Palladium? no to this and all up to the "..." Un? no Uni? no Bi? yes Di? yes Tri? yes Quint? yes Quin? no Hex? no Sex? no, nor if it refers to ... well ... never mind Hept? no Sept? no Oct? no Octo? no Quad? (Related to the number four) this, no to rest Quad? (Like on a college campus) Quad? (Slang for quadrant) Quad? (quadraphonic, even though I don't know what that means) though I thought this might be a yes until I looked it up Quad? (short for quadrapalejic) Quad? Well, I see no need to answer your other questions (they're all Yes) so: **********SPOILER********** Finally! The rule is as follows: -Articles and any other words besides nouns, adjectives, and pronouns are all CA. -Otherwise, words will be answered Yes if they describe themselves (autological) and No if they do not (heterological). -Phrases and sentences are answered Yes if any word would be a Yes, otherwise No if any word would be a No, otherwise CA (if all words are CA). The title and puzzle statement refer to the Grelling-Nelson paradox, formulated by Kurt Grelling and Leonard Nelson (Kurt and Leonard). The paradox is whether "heterological" is autological or heterological, or equivalently what it should be answered as according to my rule. Also, HINT for "Silly claim": You might want to check out "Silly claim." It'll probably be close to being solved once you get the hint. |
