A two part puzzle I thought of while at work the other day (there is no connection between work and this puzzle). The first part is a rulebreaker to come up with a specific phrase. The second part (which I will not answer any questions about until the first is $poyled) will be to come up with the origin of the phrase.

We begin with the rulebreaker (my first, so I'm sorry if I make mistakes). In theory this should not be a CA puzzle, but this may become the case based on the questions I get. Anything in italics will not be answered based on the rule, everything else will be.

O.o what the...of course nuking San Jose would be a bad idea!!!! o.O You think???

I'm as mild and as meek as a mouse?
When I hear a command, I obey?
But I know of one spot in my house?
Where no one can stand in my way?

In my own little corner, in my own little chair?
I can be, whatever I want to be?
On the wing of my fancy, I can fly anywhere?
And the world will open its arms to me?
I'm a young Egyptian princess or a milkmaid?
I'm the greatest prima donna in the land?
I'm an heiress who has always had her silk made?
By her own flock of silkworms in Japan?

I'm a girl men go mad for?
Love's a game I can play?
With a cool and confidant kind of air?
Just as long as I stay in my own little corner?
All alone in my own little chair?

...I can be whatever I want to be?
I'm a thief from Calcutta?
I'm a queen in Peru?
I'm a mermaid dancing upon the sea?
I'm a huntress on an African safari?
It's a dang'rous type of sport?
And yet it's fun?
In the night I sally forth to seek my quarry?
And I find I forgot to bring my gun?
I am lost in the jungle?
All alone and unarmed?
When I meet a lioness in her lair?
Then I'm glad to be back in my own little corner?
All alone in my own little chair?

On the wing of my fancy, I can fly anywhere? Microwave those wings of fancy, and see how far you fly
And the world will open its arms to me? In the hopes that it will hug you?
I'm a young Egyptian princess or a milkmaid? I'm a milkmaid
I'm the greatest prima donna in the land? I'm just Donna
I'm an heiress who has always had her silk made? I'm a silkworm making silk
By her own flock of silkworms in Japan? Its silkworms have a flock?

I'm a girl men go mad for? I'm going mad answering these questions
Love's a game I can play? Screw love, play monopoly
With a cool and confidant kind of air? Screw the air, it's not that cool
Just as long as I stay in my own little corner? Properties of the corner are sharp and pokey

When I meet a lioness in her lair? Fluffy lion cubs in there with her?
Then I'm glad to be back in my own little corner? I'm glad to be back as well
All alone in my own little chair? Fluffy little chair

Realized when answering this that there is one flaw in my rule, however, I will just say this. Sometimes, the answer may not be what is expected, but it will always fit within the confines of the general rule.

Oh say can you see by the dawn's early light what sou proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming, whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight o'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air, gave proof through the night that our flag was still there; oh say does that star-spangled banner yet wave, o'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
Don't you think it's strange how in the first verse of the national anthem (which is the only one we sing) all we do is ask "Is the flag still there, while we don't actually see it until the second verse?

Don't you think it's strange how in the first verse of the national anthem (which is the only one we sing) all we do is ask "Is the flag still there, while we don't actually see it until the second verse?

And now the Christina Agulera version

Oh say can you see by the dawn's early light what sou proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming, whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight what so proudly we watched at the twilight's last gleaming?

And the promised second verse, or at least the question part of it.

On the shore dimly seen, through the mists of the deep, where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes, what is that in the breeze, o'er the towering steep, as it fitfully blows, half conceals half discloses?

And now for those who actually want to see the flag instead of just wondering if it's there, I have included the rest of the second verse

Now it catches the gleam, of the morning's first beam
In full glory reflected, now shines on the stream
'Tis the star-spangled banner oh long may it wave
O'er the land of the free, and the home of the brave!

I'm fuzzy wuzzy? Screw Fuzzy Wuzzy
Fuzzy wuzzy is I? Screw this line of questioning, Fuzzy Wuzzy is irrelevant
Fuzzy wuzzy is me? Screw all things fuzzy
Fuzzy wuzzy, I'm ok? Nuking Fuzzy Wuzzy means he is no longer ok
I'm nuking fuzzy wuzzy? I'm cleaning up the mess you made

I'm going to use the rule more to find the different answers that can be given based on the rule. Also, fyi, Part one of the puzzle will be complete when someone can guess the correct phrase in italics. I'm betting that the rule might never be properly broken, but the phrase is still findable.

Oh say can you see by the dawn's early light what sou proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming, whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight o'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming? The broad stripes and bright stars are ever so lovely
And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air, gave proof through the night that our flag was still there; oh say does that star-spangled banner yet wave, o'er the land of the free and the home of the brave? In the rockets' red glare the flag can be seen
Don't you think it's strange how in the first verse of the national anthem (which is the only one we sing) all we do is ask "Is the flag still there, while we don't actually see it until the second verse? It is very strange

Don't you think it's strange how in the first verse of the national anthem (which is the only one we sing) all we do is ask "Is the flag still there, while we don't actually see it until the second verse? Nuking the flag would make it disappear

And now the Christina Agulera version Oh boy! I did not watch the superbowl, so until now I didn't know how bad she screwed up

Oh say can you see by the dawn's early light what sou proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming, whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight what so proudly we watched at the twilight's last gleaming? The horror!!!

And the promised second verse, or at least the question part of it. cool

On the shore dimly seen, through the mists of the deep, where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes, what is that in the breeze, o'er the towering steep, as it fitfully blows, half conceals half discloses? Microwave the foe's flag before they get to yours!

I'm not sure that I've heard this full version before, thanks for the lesson

"Screw its fluffy properties, I'm nuking it in the microwave"? YES!!! Good job, now on to Part II

So, the phrase, as my sister has figured out, is "Screw its fluffy properties, I'm nuking it in the microwave!".

The goal for Part II is to come up with what has the fluffy properties and is going into the microwave. You must also figure out why the phrase was said.

This part works like a normal puzzle. However, any guesses as to what my rule was can still be made as well, if it is not figured out, I may just use it again.

For the record, that's not the full version, there are two more verses. And they never sing the second verse, although on formal military occasions they may sing the first and the fourth.

Nuking = microwaving? Detonating a nuclear bomb?
Microwave = thing in kitchen typically used to heat food? Some other device using the electromagnetic waves known as microwaves?
It = food? beverage? Stuffed animal? Real animal? Living or dead? (I suspect it would be dead after being nuked, one way or the other) Fluffy the three-headed dog from Harry Potter?

If Ballin is correct and it is based on a true event - is it something you personally experienced? A historical event? Something I am likely to have heard of? Something your neighbor is likely to have heard of? Something the mayor of your city is likely to have heard of? Something a super-smart history buff is likely to have heard of?

Or is it a fictional story? Urban Legend FYOI? A work of fiction such as a novel, TV Show, or movie? FSEI (but not in the previous clasification)?

Is the phrase based on a true event? This event did occur. The item really was put into the microwave.

For the record, that's not the full version, there are two more verses. And they never sing the second verse, although on formal military occasions they may sing the first and the fourth. I'll have to check out the rest

Did "it" explode in the microwave?

Is "it" a single food? Or a dish of some sort?

Type of food - candy/sweet? Fruit? Vegetable? Meat? Poultry? Fish? Dairy product? Cheese? Grain? Bread? Pasta? A drink?

Speaking of cheese, your "like a cheese stick" mondegreen has become stuck in my head, especially when I hear that song.

Was it frozen? exactly!

*****SPOILER*****

My housemate Junior year of college had some cool whip in the freezer. She wanted it right at that moment though, and did not want to wait for it to thaw naturally. However, the warning on the cool whip said "do not microwave" and she wondered out loud why she shouldn't. My response to this was that "it would lose its fluffy properties" (and get all melty). Her response, in a really funny manner that you would have to hear to really get it was "Screw its fluffy properties, I'm nuking it in the microwave!". At this point she thawed it in the microwave, and I believe it turned out just fine.

Hope you guys liked the puzzle! If you want another chance to break the rule for my rulebreaker, let me know, and I'll come up with another phrase.
