"Doesn't he know ANYTHING about proper grammar?" "...Apparently not." I swear, if he's allowed to keep on with this, I'm going to quit. It's not fair...can't he obey the rules? |

Oh okay. Did a misinterpretation by you or "him" result in you: dying? losing? missing an opportunity? Maybe RPG was the wrong word, but I didn't know of a better one. I suppose this isn't a normal RPG then? other? It resulted in me not knowing what the heck he's talking about Is he foreign? he might be, irrelevant, but if English is his first language, I feel sorry for his teachers Is he using improper grammar intentionally? Most likely, as he is perfectly capable of using it correctly; I've seen him do it |

Is there a rule in this game about grammar or speech? Yes In this game, do you interact with other people? That could have two answers...yes, our characters interact with each other, and we also keep in touch with other players Non-player characters? Technically there aren't any, but there are some who aren't assigned, so anyone can write them Do you know "him" in real life? No Would knowing what he is talking about enhance your game play? Yes Is it essential to play the game? Is knowing what he's talking about essential? Well, if he hadn't made such an uncanonical background for his character, it wouldn't be. Can you ignore him? Unfortunately not, as he and I are the only ones playing this thread, which was his idea Riddle your to relevant this is, Also? Speaking like Yoda and/or writing in reverse will avail you nothing |

Are you teaming up on an adventure? no, we're just writing Are you planning to write a story based on the adventure? No, we're writing the thread But you don't know what to write about since you don't know what he's doing? This is true. RECAP and hints: On a fanfic/RPG board on Proboards that I belong to, (It's Harry Potter, btw) we play as the students and teachers in JKR's world along with original characters. The original characters, though, have to make *sense* within the HP-'verse, and this guy's characters do not. His grammar is also atrocious, which is a pity, because I know he's capable of using proper grammar (he's proved it before) and he seems to be doing it to spite me. I have to put up with it though, because he began the RPG thread for my characters and his...not surprising, as it's more than likely I'll be called on more than other people in our group to play. What's left is: Why do his characters/plotlines not make sense to me? Why is it most likely that I would be required to play his thread? What exactly necessitated my being in it? (HINT to that: something about one of his characters, and one of mine, is relevant) |

Are you supposed to make up your own characters? Do his characters have qualities that are inconsistent with the plot? Does one of his characters have a storyline that involves your characters, and because of his writing style, you cannot make progress? |

Are you supposed to make up your own characters? We can, or we can apply to be canon characters. Do his characters have qualities that are inconsistent with the plot? Yes. Does one of his characters have a storyline that involves your characters, and because of his writing style, you cannot make progress? Yes...explore all this. =) |

I am going to assume that both he and you are writers, because I'm not 100% sure if you are writers, or actors, or gamers. In any case, change the words "write" to "play" if my assumption is wrong. =] Here's my guess: 1. The guy [I'll refer to him as Mr. A] and you are writing two separate characters, and no one else is writing them at this moment. 2. You did not expect to work with Mr. A, but because of certain circumstances, you have no choice. 3. His character is written to "interact" or become involved with your character, and to maintain overall consistency, you comply and reluctantly agree with work with him and write your portion to match up with whatever he writes. For example, let's say you wrote about a female character and he wrote about a male character. Under normal circumstances, the character would not have substantial interaction that would interfere with the work of another writer, but Mr. A wrote about the male character falling in love with your female character [this is just an example], and because you have integrity, you tweak your section to match his. 4. It is a work in progress, and your section has to be directly correlated to Mr. A's. So when he writes completely nonsensically, you have no idea what to write because you do not understand what he has written. You want to maintain consistency for the sake of the forum and literature, but you are annoyed that you can't accomplish this because he has made it impossible to follow. That is my guess. :\ |

In any case, change the words "write" to "play" if my assumption is wrong. =] We are writers, yes. Although as we're writing as different characters, taking on those roles, I called it an RPG...is this wrong? Here's my guess: 1. The guy [I'll refer to him as Mr. A] and you are writing two separate characters, and no one else is writing them at this moment. Right (although both his characters are involved in this thread, so he's writing two, I'm writing one) You can call him Monk, btw...his professor is "Professor Monk", and his first-year is Kelise Vithar. 2. You did not expect to work with Mr. A, but because of certain circumstances, you have no choice. Right, and the circumstances have to do with Kelise. 3. His character is written to "interact" or become involved with your character, and to maintain overall consistency, you comply and reluctantly agree with work with him and write your portion to match up with whatever he writes. Sort of... No. We do our writing in threads *to* interact with other characters...that's what makes it a game. 4. It is a work in progress, The thread isn't finished yet, so yes and your section has to be directly correlated to Mr. A's. So when he writes completely nonsensically, you have no idea what to write because you do not understand what he has written. You want to maintain consistency for the sake of the forum and literature, but you are annoyed that you can't accomplish this because he has made it impossible to follow. Yes. Now, what is he doing (besides killing the grammar) that's made his characters nonsensical? That is my guess. :\ |

I haven't read the source he's taking the stuff from, so I couldn't say whether he stole the characters or not. Like-- Professor Monk kidnaps Spongebob and asks Frodo for ransom? Haha, but not these. No Spongebob or LotR involved...although I wouldn't put it past him to mix the two. If anyone would, he would. *groan* |

CLARIFICATION: By "stole" the characters, I mean: This RPG is not meant to be a crossover. You either use canon Harry Potter characters, or make up your own. He's at least incorporating elements from this other source (explore) but as I haven't read it, I couldn't say whether his characters are from his imagination, or from the book. |

God, no...although, like this series, I refuse to read Twilight. If Monk starts throwing Twilight characters in along with this, I really am leaving. :-P |

No, to all: in fact this author hates Narnia (though I love it), and the other two, AFAIK, are irrelevant. |

Golden Compass? YES! Or rather, the His Dark Materials trilogy. Very good :-) There's a bit more, but I feel like I'm torturing you, so this is enough. Sally Lockhart? Sookie Stackhouse? ***SPOILER*** On the roleplaying game "Hogwarts Academy" on Proboards, we interact in written threads with each other. The group members are allowed to play canon characters, or OCs as they want, but no crossovers are allowed. One of our more recent members, Monk (aka "Professor Daniel Monk") also plays a little girl, Kelise Vithar, who has just transferred into Hufflepuff House. Apparently, she ran away from her school in Scandinavia, because her cousin Amora tried to kill her with a "Kraken" which was really a Giant Squid under influence of a Growth Potion, and the "Kraken" ate Amora instead. Also, Amora broke Kelise's arm just because she could, and it had healed by the time this eleven year old somehow Apparated from Scandinavia to Scotland. And "Headmaster Anderson" dismissed it as a "malicious but harmless prank". My character, Professor Sylvia Bloome, is Professor Sprout's replacement as Head of Hufflepuff House, and so I have to deal with Kelise the Abnormally Magical from Scandinavia in my thread. Oh, and Monk's adopting her, even though she apparently didn't know him before. Because she came to find this (twenty-five year old, btw) professor as he's "the most powerful sorcerer in the world". What? Dumbledore, anyone? Who's about five times Monk's age? And on top of all that, Monk's punctuation and spelling are atrocious. ARGH! On top of all that, Monk's abnormal ideas for her are drawn from the "His Dark Materials" series, which means that whenever something doesn't mesh with HP, he'll say "oh, but it works in HDM" and I'm at the point of saying "WELL THIS ISN'T HDM, GET OVER IT!" /end rant. Sorry. Yeah. He's *very* annoying. |

Thanks, Pikachizzle! I really appreciate you sticking with me here! And yes...annoying. What's even worse is that Monk may not even be who he says he is...the Proboards group was splintered off from a Yahoo group, also called Hogwarts Academy, after there was a bit of fuss and bother between Susan (my friend and the Admin of the Proboards group) and the mods/admins of the Yahoo group. I sided with Susan, and we left. We're beginning to suspect Monk may be one or both of the Yahoo group's mods, come to try and drive us mad so we quit running the group. Perhaps we're just being paranoid, but perhaps not... |

Couldn't Susan block his IP or something? Or ban his account? |

I don't know if she knows how to do that. Also, sometimes IP addresses change, I do know that much about them, though I don't know how to block them or ban them either...but I'll suggest it. He really is annoying. Just...gah. |

my sympathies, but couldn't you just annoy him back? by posting complete non-sequitors, or even just ignoring what he posts and replying instead to what you wish he'd said? drive him/them mad instead |
