So it's not that it made you homesick? Nope, and it all depends on what you call home I suppose. I was in Ireland when I read Redwine's $poyler. If I had been in Norway, I might have felt a bit homesick for Ireland, perhaps. Both places are home these days, after more than 13 years in this wonderful country (minus its politcians, lol) There was a programme on TV over Christmas about the impact of this song on Ireland's sporting & cultural life , it was terrific? This is not the solution. But.... |

Glad to hear you say that Ireland is like home to you. We may have lost everything else but we still have a beautiful country with warm welcoming people. Is this anything to do with the (hmm have to be careful) bastardization of this song by various football supporters in the UK e.g Liverpool fans sing "The Fields of Anfield Road" which really ticks me off? Or Celtic fans whom seem to think singing it makes them more Irish? Or perhaps that this song has been hijacked by extreme republicans who feel it embodies Ireland's struggle against British oppression which is complete guff by the way. The song could have been written and set in any country where the poor man's minor crime is harshly punished by the ruling establishment. Oh dear this probably counts as another rant. Sorry. It's just that I love this song so much and hate when it get's misrepresented. My father in law sings this at get togethers and there's never a dry eye in the house. |

Oh another thought. Some people insert a completely made up line into the chorus as follows "Where once we watched the small freebirds fly" insert "Oh baby let the freebirds fly" continue with "Our love was on the wing....." This also gets on my goat. Ok I promise I'll stop now. |

Peter: If all that gets on your goat, DON'T read the comments below the YouTube video for the song (the one Eli posted on Redwine's puzzle). I'm not Irish, but the comments annoy me, so I can probably guess how much they'd aggravate you. |

Balin (Balin) Were many other people at the "event"? No, not at the moment it took place, but indirectly, Yes Would it be better described as an occasion? Celebration? Remembrance? Something solemn? Not truly either one, but I guess a slight bit of 'rememberance' would be an accurate description. Peter365 (Peter365) When you cry are they tears of sadness? joy? meloncholy? nostalgia? When I hear the song today? Mostly sadness, as I remember the first time and the reason why I cried then as well. Does this remind you of a sad event in your life? No Would any other song cause you to cry for the same reason as this one? Oooh, tricky one. It is all related to the first time I heard the song. If a different song had been played on that occasion, that song would remind of the reasons why I cried. However, 'any song' would not have been played. It had to be a spesific type of song. And I assume that maybe that song was chosen for a reason. |

Sorry for the delay, but work gets in the way some times, lol Recap: When I browsed through Redwines puzzle Its all about plants, and realized it was about the Irish song Fields of Athenry, I couldnt help shedding a few tears. The reason for this is related to the first time I ever heard the song. I guess you might define it as a recording, but think wider, as it was not played on the radio or CD. What other types of recordings can you think of? The setting was sort of in remembrance of a young person that had died in a tragic accident. The details of his death is not that relevant, he was killed in an avalanche on a school trip. But there is something else relevant about this teenager. Explore. This is the reason for why only a certain type of song could have been played at this occasion. I guess that is also slightly relevant who performed the song. At least it adds to the story. |

Should we figure out the specific relative? Is that relevant? It could have been any close relative. In fact, it was the boy's father. Did you see the recording? Yes, I saw the recording The memorial service? There might have been a memorial service shortly after the accident or in relation to the funeral, but that is not relevant here. |

Was something being named in honor of the boy? For example: A scholarship? A building? A new law? Was the song sung by his classmates? Or the people who would benefit from the "thing" named in his honor? |

Was he planning to travel to Ireland? Yes, he was. To stay there for a while? For a little bit yeah. Was he going to be an exchange student? Nope And live with your family? No, I had not moved to Ireland yet when he died, was still living in Norway back then. And I was still living in Norway when I heard the song for the first time, but knew I was moving to Ireland just a few weeks later. |

Did you know anything about the boy before the memorial service? Nope Recap please? Sure, here it comes. Reading Redwine's 'It's all about plants' puzzle made me shed a few tears. The reason for this is related to the first time I heard the song 'Fields of Athenry'. It happened a few weeks before I moved to Ireland, and it was something I saw on television. You might say it was a sort of rememberance for a teenager that was killed in an avalance accident. The boy was very interested in Irish folk music and had planned a trip to Ireland to immerse himself in the Irish folk music scene and hopefully hear some of his heroes live. But he didn't live long enough to make the journey. You're almost there, just a few things to determine. HINT: He couldn't make the journey himself since he was dead, but someone else travelled to Ireland. And who performed the song? It was none of his family or friends. |

This one is soooo close to solving and I have been 'absent' for a while so I have decided to spoil *********SPOILER*************** When I read through Redwine's puzzle, I gradually realized it had to be something about an Irish person being deported due to theft, which seems to have happened a lot. But only as I came to the end, I saw she had used 'The Fields of Athenry' as setting for her puzzle, and I could feel a couple of tears falling down my cheek. The reason is the circumstances when I first heard that song. It was on a Norwegian TV-show called Tore på Sporet (loosely translates with Tore on the Track). The TV show is a mix of talk-show/reality/documentary. The title hints towards the content - the program host, Tore Strømøy, helps people tracking down something or someone. It seems these days that it is mostly searching for people, for instance birth parents if you're adopted (I can't say for sure, as I haven't watched it since I left Norway in 97). But in the first few seasons, it was a good mix. One person was helped finding her father's living relatives in Russia, as he had fled during the Soviet communist rule. Another was a person, who had a male relative, that after being a sailor for some years, decided to settle on some tiny island off South America somewhere. And the family just wanted to know the location where he was buried. A few weeks before I moved to Ireland, they had an episode set in Dublin. As I knew I was going soon, I looked forward to watching it to see some of the Dublin sights. Little did I know that I was going to cry for most of it. The TV show took a man over to Dublin, to walk in the 'unwalked' footsteps of his own son. His son was passionate about Irish music, and The Dubliners were big heroes of his, and he had started saving up for a trip to Dublin to visit pubs that would have live Irish music in the evenings. However, his son was killed in a freak accident on a school trip before he had the chance to go. So Tore Strømøy took the father around Dublin, to see, feel and listen to all the places his son would have set foot, if he had still been alive. And at the very end, he introduced the father to The Dubliners. They were actually invited home to one of them. And there, in the back garden of one of the musicians, they performed Fields of Athenry for the father. That was the first time I heard the song, thought it was beautiful, but also cried because so did the father and I think the host too had a bit of watery eyes. And every time I hear the song it reminds me of that scene. |
