Did you physically use the piece of wood? Or did it only make you aware of the possibility to escape?

Were you at home? If not: in a public place? private place? Did you go there voluntarily?

Would the wood have prevented the danger from coming about (for example, by keeping a door from locking)?

Or did the fact that the piece of wood managed to get where it was, show you that something had been possible, and therefore was still possible (for example, if the wood was hanging from the ceiling, there was probably a ladder around somewhere)?

Was the wood a part of the shutter? no

Was it lying at the spot where the shutter would close? no So it never would have closed all the way? no Or would have popped back open like a garage door? no

Was the wood lying? hanging? standing? on the floor? on the wall?
The wooden thing, is it common in household? in the library? outdoors? Was it unique?

The wooden thing, is it common in household? not really common unless there's a use for it that's passed me by, but equally you wouldn't be uber surprised to see it in the library? outdoors? Was it unique? no

we've had a bolt, but it is something which would have been used to secure the shutter once in place? a bar that goes across it and has a lock on it?

The intended use for the wooden thing was:
to secure the shutter not to fully close?
to secure the shutter not to hit the ground and possibly damage?
to secure the shutter not to move?
something else entirely?

Was the wooden thing where it was supposed to be? Or was it displaced? If so, did displacing the thing make the shutter close unexpectedly?

So, you were at the staff part of the library with the shutter. The shutter was kept at its place by wooden wedge (sort of). Suddenly someone displaced the wedge and the shutter started closing. You took your daughters and quickly ran out of the library.
Did the shutter have to be kept by a wedge because it was loose? So that you would have been able to rise it manually anyway?

************* SPOILER ****************

I was with my young daughters and was ringing the bell to be let into the staff door. As we were standing there the shutter started to come down. At the same time I heard an alarm go off inside the library. I thought it was a fire alarm and the shutter was automatically falling because of it. We quickly dived back under the shutter - otherwise we would have been trapped between the shutter and the door (about three feet). I then noticed a long piece of wood on the floor and realised that it had been holding the shutter up, it wasn't an automatic shutter, and my youngest was no doubt the one who had knocked it out of place. The alarm was a coincidence (there was indeed a security alert in the library, but the shutter was unconnected and we could have lifted the grill manually

Well done!
