This is like Peter365's Connections Puzzle, only with Universities. Basically, each college/University must have three things in common for it to be a "Yes". Otherwise, it will be a "No". Note: Although it is not technically required, I suspect the only "yes"es will be American Universities, so please limit it to those. Canadian universities might be too, but I highly doubt any others would. So don't ask. |

Stanford's teams are the Cardinals, but their mascot is not a cardinal (of either the avian or the Catholic variety), but a tree (and I must say, a sorry-looking one). Is this disparity relevant? |

No, but their teams are NOT the Cardinals and THAT is relevant. Furthermore, the tree is not the team's mascot, it is the band's mascot, but alas, that is not relevant either. Huh? I go to Cal and we play Stanford every year (hence the obligatory jab at the sorry-looking tree). I have never heard of any of their teams being anything other than Cardinals, nor have I seen any mascot other than that tree. Anyway, is the location of the universities (city, state, etc.) relevant? The number of different sports in which the university competes? Which athletic conference it is in? |

Huh? I go to Cal and we play Stanford every year (hence the obligatory jab at the sorry-looking tree). I have never heard of any of their teams being anything other than Cardinals, nor have I seen any mascot other than that tree. The team doesn't have a mascot. And most people don't know the tree belongs to the band and not the team, so don't feel bad. As for the Cardinals, look it up. Because the distinction between "Cardinals" and their actual nickname is important, so I won't give it away. Anyway, is the location of the universities (city, state, etc.) relevant? The number of different sports in which the university competes? Which athletic conference it is in? No to all |

It's actually "The Cardinal", not "Cardinals" right? Nicknames for the other yeses so far: Harvard - Crimson Syracuse - Orangemen Naval Academy (Annapolis) - Midshipmen Elon - Crimson (formerly Christians) Gallaudet - Bison Julliard (maybe?) - the penguin? (had a hard time finding this one so I don't know if it's right) About the only thing I can see in common there is that they all end in "n", but "the cardinal" would throw that pattern off. You've got a few named for colors, a few named for people/professions, and a couple of animals. |

Oh scratch that, "The Cardinal" is the mascot, not the nickname. They don't actually have a nickname. (Btw, count me in the list of people who have always thought that it was "trees." How weird that the band has it's own mascot and it's something that's so widely known!) |

Since it seems that I'm already practically spamming this puzzle today, I'll go ahead and add (for anyone who doesn't already know, in case it's relevant) that Stanford's "Cardinal" references the color, not the animal. |

It's actually "The Cardinal", not "Cardinals" right? YES! Nicknames for the other yeses so far: Harvard - Crimson Syracuse - Orangemen Orange, but Orangemen would work too Naval Academy (Annapolis) - Midshipmen Elon - Crimson (formerly Christians) They're the Phoenix, though crimson would work too Gallaudet - Bison Julliard (maybe?) - the penguin? (had a hard time finding this one so I don't know if it's right) Julliard doesn't have athletic teams. Which means they technically don't "fail" the test about the sports teams. But they don't pass it either. And they pass the other two, so they don't actually "fail" any of the three requirements. But they don't pass one of them either. So I wasn't sure how to classify that About the only thing I can see in common there is that they all end in "n", but "the cardinal" would throw that pattern off. You've got a few named for colors, a few named for people/professions, and a couple of animals. Easier than that Omitting irrelevant conversation Since it seems that I'm already practically spamming this puzzle today, I'll go ahead and add (for anyone who doesn't already know, in case it's relevant) that Stanford's "Cardinal" references the color, not the animal. It's not relevant. And I didn't know that either. |

Yes. And I'm not entirely sure how to classify schools that don't have athletic teams but meet the other two The nickname does not end in S? Bingo! That's requirement number 1. And bonus points to anyone who can name the one school (at least I think it's the only one) whose men's teams would fit this rule but whose women's teams wouldn't. |

I'm not going to go through all the asked questions and see which ones fit the other two, because that would take far too long. But if you want to ask whether certain schools would fit the other two requirements, go ahead. But don't copy and paste all of the schools from above, or I might bite you. |

UMass? St. John's? No to both. Each of these fulfills one of the other two requirements, although it's a different one. I think both of these fit #1 You're right. By the way, if anyone wants to take a stab at the school which would fit the rules for men but not women, go ahead. Because when this puzzle is solved, I'll answer that. But thankfully nobody asked that school. I think I'd have said "yope" if someone did. |

Schools with a state name in the college name relevant? Without? This... Although it gets a bit tough for some of the Cal State schools, for instance CS-San Diego is more commonly known as San Diego State. I generally use the common name in these cases, for instance San Diego State, or Rutgers (as opposed to Rutgers - the State University of New Jersey) however neither of these pass the nickname test. Now just find the third test. And as a hint, several schools you've guessed above pass the two known tests but are still no's. If you want to go through and explore that, it might be helpful. |

On a side note, I wasn't very sure how to classify schools whose names contain a state name but aren't named after the state - for instance New York University, named after the city, or in an even more complicated scenario, Indiana University which is located in Indiana County, Pennsylvania. But neither of those have nicknames that don't end end in an s anyway. |

It seems like almost all of the ones written as one word (not counting "college" and "university") are yeses on the third test, and all of the ones that have two or more words (not counting "college" and "university") are nos. The only exceptions seem to be Boston College and Boston University, which got nos, but you said both were tricky, so I'm ignoring them for now. |

The only exceptions seem to be Boston College and Boston University, which got nos, but you said both were tricky, so I'm ignoring them for now. Pretty much, when their "normal" name is one word, it's a "Yes", otherwise it's a "No". Usually this can be handled by dropping "College" or "University". But I've never heard anyone call BC or BU "Boston". So you've gotten all of them **SPOILER** 1. The school's athletics nickname must not end in S 2. The school must not contain the state name (in terms of "common" name) 3. The school must be one word ("common" name) |
