A: "How about a dime?"
B: "More like a quarter."
A: "Fine, a nickel."
B: "Sounds reasonable."

What are A and B talking about?
(I'll try to get to questions promptly, but it's a busy time for school.)

Are they estimating the diameter of something (since a nickel is between a dime and a quarter in size)?

A pipe? cable? a handle of some sort? Are they doing construction?

Or is it maybe the apparent diameter of something very far in the distance? like something in outer space?

I thought you said the profession of person B was relevant? My mistake in wording - out of your list, B might be a shopkeeper in addition to his relevant profession, but even if he did run a shop, this doesn't matter.

is it a watch? a button? a locket? a monocle? a hearing aid? None of these.

Are they talking face-to-face?
Or are they talking on the phone?
Relevant?
Is one describing the thing to the other?
Or are they both looking at it at the time the conversation takes place?
Relevant?

The object is something you "might" wear...
Would men and women both wear it?
Would it be unusual for someone to wear it?
Would it be worn more in certain countries?
Regions?
Does it signify or symbolise anything about the wearer?

Is it edible?
Water-soluable?
Can it go bad?

Or are they talking on the phone?
Relevant? Irrelevant, could be either.
Is one describing the thing to the other? They both know what it is and what it does.
Or are they both looking at it at the time the conversation takes place? They don't have to.
Relevant? Not really.

The object is something you "might" wear...
Would men and women both wear it? Usually no.
Would it be unusual for someone to wear it? No.
Would it be worn more in certain countries? Maybe.
Regions? Again, maybe.
Does it signify or symbolise anything about the wearer? No.

Is it edible? No.
Water-soluble? Yes-ish.
Can it go bad? No-ish.

Is it:
a technological device?
the size of a nickel? Or maybe only a part of is? Or its cross section?
something invented in the 19th century? 20th? Earlier?
Colorful? Of any particular color?
More likely to be worn in some cultures than others? Western?
Connected to numismatics in any other way than using coin sizes to determine its size?
Used / worn for:
fun?
decoration?
some practical purpose?

Can this be be significantly bigger or signigicantly smaller that the specimen discussed in the puzzle?
Does its size play any role in its effectiveness?
Do you (author of the puzzle) own one? Are you wearing it while posting? (please tell me wether these questions are OK with the rules or not)

something invented in the 19th century? 20th? Earlier? In some form it's probably been around for a while.
Colorful? Not usually. Of any particular color? No.
More likely to be worn in some cultures than others? Western? I would guess Western but I don't know where to find that information.
Connected to numismatics in any other way than using coin sizes to determine its size? No.

***********SPOILER***************
A is visiting his hairstylist, B, and they decide on a type of hair gel that will tame his unruly hair. It is expensive and hard to wash out, though, and he wants to use the minimum amount necessary for a good look. The amount you'd put on your hands is best compared to a coin, as everyone knows their sizes without having to remember how many inches/centimeters across it is.

Too funny! That's exactly what popped into my mind when I asked those questions - the fact many of my hair products actually include a specific-coin sized amount to be used.

Great puzzle!

It never occurred to me to ask wether the object changes shape while being used, and that would be crucial in finding the answer... Great puzzle, surely teached me a lot about lateral thinking!

Glad to see this was a well-received puzzle. I myself got about nine inches of hair cut off recently and have needed to resume the usage of gel (which was a staple item in high school), thus the inspiration for this.
