I've made up a new verb -- it's called altching. Sometimes I happen to altch several times in a day, but never during sleep. Some other times I don't altch for days. When I altch, I often look around. How does one altch? |

Do you altch on purpose? Or is it something you have no control over? Do you look around to make sure someone sees you? To make sure nobody sees you? Or do you look at a certain person? object? Do other people altch, too? Men? Women? Adults? Teenagers? Children? Do you need any items to altch? Does it involve eating? drinking? communication? movement? Does it involve seeing? hearing? tasting? smelling? touching? Do you altch indoors? outdoors? |

No. Does it involve eating? drinking? communication? movement? None of these, really. Does it involve seeing? A bit of this, no to the rest. hearing? tasting? smelling? touching? Do you altch indoors? outdoors? Both. |

So altching sort of involves looking at some kind of object but you don't need any items to altch... So wouldn't you call the object an item because ...it's too big? ...too far away? ...not tangible? Do you look at ...the sky? ...the sun/moon/stars? ...the landscape? ...water? ...a building? ...any part of your own body? Don't you have any control over it because ...you do it out of a reflex? ...you have a problem with controlling your eye movements (like squinting when you're tired)? ...whatever you look at is so big that you have to see it at some point, whether you want to or not? |

Is it feeling a tickle in one's nose? Though I know that isn't really an action, it almost seems that's the only thing left. Speaking of which, if my guess was wrong, is altching a true action? or rather a sensation? |

Is it feeling a tickle in one's nose? This is very close. When you altch, your nose often tickles. Though I know that isn't really an action, it almost seems that's the only thing left. Speaking of which, if my guess was wrong, is altching a true action? or rather a sensation? Closer to this. |

Potato: Do you try to trigger the sneeze by looking into bright light or something? Spot on. ***************** SPOILER ***************** to altch: to be stuck in the middle of a sneeze. Often involves making funny faces. One can try to trigger the sneeze by looking into something bright, such as the sky or a lamp. Thank you all for playing! |

Fun fact for the day: Studies have shown that only 10-30% of the population has the gene that allows the bright light trick to work. I have it, but my husband doesn't, so he thinks I'm half nuts about it...even after I pulled out my genetics textbook and showed him it was real. From inheritance studies, they know it's a dominant gene, but haven't actually identified the specific gene yet. The best part? Some scientists call it the ACHOO gene, and call the effect ACHOO syndrome, where "ACHOO" is an acronym for something. |
