A man is walking down a hallway when suddenly he hears his wife scream. He opens a door and finds her lying on the floor. Next to her is a map. What happened? |

No Reptiles, amphibians, and jellyfish would fit under chordates, chordates, and cnidarians respectively. While classification is relevant, it's not necessary to pinpoint the exact classification of this animal. Once the type of animal is discovered, we should quickly discover the exact type. Was it a frog? (or toad?) Yes! And... a poisonous animal? ...yes! Was the map used to conceal the animal? No Could kids have used any other object instead of the map? There is a reason this map was used Was the map big wall map, used in school to teach geography? Or rather a pocket-size map? It likely would have been about the size of an atlas page, so approx. 8" x 11". If it had been a wall map it would not have ended up on the floor. Was the map also lying on the floor? Yes Hanging on the wall? No Attached to a standing map hanger? No is that relevant at all? Yes, and there is something else relevant about the map. Was this a contemporary map? Yes Or historical map? No. A historical map could have been used but the safest assumption is that the map was from a current publication |

Frogs (and other amphibians) are chordates. True, but I was hoping to keep away from this depth of information if possible, as it only relates to the solution in principle. As long as the general category could be discovered (and it has), then one specific feature of it (which has also been discovered), then only the idea of such classifications is needed in order to proceed with the puzzle. I do appreciate the note though, as it may help others who were confused or thought previous answers were misleading. Is the map of a country in: North America? South America? Europe? Asia? Africa? Australia/Oceania? Antarctica? The map is of the continent of South America Is this type of frog native to the country? Yes Was she using it to teach about the country? She wasn't, no... |

Did she recognize the exact species of the frog? (because she had seen a frog like this before? because she is keeping exotic frogs at home? because her main subject is biology?) Was the frog on her table? on the table of one of the children? on the floor? at the wall? on a tree? Relevant what happened before she saw the frog? Did she recognize the exact species of the frog? Maybe not at first, but... because she had seen a frog like this before? ...she may have seen one like it before. It's possible that even if she hadn't seen an actual frog like this she had some knowledge about it. because she is keeping exotic frogs at home? No, irrelevant because her main subject is biology? No, assume that she teaches multiple subjects to 8-9 year old children Was the frog on her table? No - good q, explore on the table of one of the children? Not this either, explore... on the floor? No... at the wall? on a tree? None of these but keep exploring... Relevant what happened before she saw the frog? No Did she think a child has brought the frog? She knows that one of them brought the frog to class for show-and-tell, yes that the frog got there accidentally? No perhaps together with the map? The frog and the map were brought together, yes Was the topic of the lesson somehow (vaguely) related to fairy tales? (thinking of the puzzle title) No, not at all. The title has a double meaning that is related to biology and is meant as a clue to indicate that biology is somehow related to the puzzle. I believe that all relevant info about how biology relates has been discovered with the exception of 1 piece of information that you have referenced with your questions above that I have encouraged exploration of. |

Was the frog in the child's mouth (ew)? NO, but you are very, very close and certainly OTRT! Pocket? No Is "Kings Play Chess On Fine Grained Sand" relevant? That's the inspiration for the puzzle title, but is only meant as a clue that biology is connected to the puzzle in some way, and the relevance of this has already been determined. There is still a way that this could help, and it has to do with your first question above (and the one that follows). Was the frog in a container of some sort? YES Just to check: We are talking about a 3-D model or reproduction of a poisonous frog here, yes? Yes, that's right did the child pass the frog around the room? Possibly, but this action is not relevant |

Did it have a hole? A lid? Was the lid on? Was it off? Was the woman scared that the frog would leave the container? If it had been real, would this fear have been justified? |

No - even if the frog had been real there wouldn't have been a threat of this If it had been real, would this fear have been justified? Absolutely |

Was she afraid simply because the container (can we call it a jar? a bottle?) was being opened? Was she worried simply because the child had one of these? Is the map at all relevant anymore? |

Was she afraid simply because the container (can we call it a jar? a bottle?) was being opened? It was a jar, but her fear was not simply because it was being opened, there was something else... Was she worried simply because the child had one of these? No - if the jar hadn't been opened she wouldn't have been afraid at all Is the map at all relevant anymore? Not to discover the main solution, merely a detail of it |

Did the same child also bring the map? Is there something else relevant about the map? Were there any marks or notes on the map? (here we found the frog) Would the teacher have been equally scared if it had been a map of Europe? Was there something else in the jar besides the frog? Did the child put something in? Was she afraid the frog would die? in the jar? Was she more afraid of legal consequences for the child (or his parents)? (for importing a protected species) Relevant that frogs held in captivity are generally not very poisonous, but frogs captured in their natural habitat are? |

Did the same child also bring the map? Possibly, but not relevant how the map got there. The relevance of the map is to help determine the kind of animal involved, and this has been done. Is there something else relevant about the map? No Were there any marks or notes on the map? (here we found the frog) Very possible based on the kind of frog that was being displayed Would the teacher have been equally scared if it had been a map of Europe? No, but this wouldn't have been the case Was there something else in the jar besides the frog? Yes... Did the child put something in? No - good q - the child did not put anything into the jar during class Was she afraid the frog would die? No, not the frog... in the jar? No Was she more afraid of legal consequences for the child (or his parents)? (for importing a protected species) No, this was not a concern Relevant that frogs held in captivity are generally not very poisonous, but frogs captured in their natural habitat are? Yes, this is relevant Did the kid kiss/lick/touch the frog? No but you are OTRT Did the kid, as a joke, threaten to kiss/lick/touch the frog? No, but once again you are OTRT |

Would the child be poisoned by eating the poison? This is the closest, but there's a better word for how it would be done Inhaling the poison? Absorbing the poison through skin? None of these Other way? HINT: Think about where the frog was and how the child was presenting it to the class |

Was there a liquid in the jar? Yes... water? Yes, it was water, but explore this and you'll have it solved Did the teacher think the frog was dead? Yes Did the other children know that the frog was not real? No Did a child attempt to take out? ingest? eat? None of these drink? whatever there was in the jar besides the frog? YES, this action was done I think enough has been uncovered if someone wants to piece together the solution |

******** SPOILER ******** A student plays a trick on his teacher and the entire class during a show-and-tell time in class. He comes to class with a canister/jar containing a specimen of a species of poison-skinned frog native to South America. The frog inside the jar is a realistic looking toy frog, and the "preserving liquid" in the jar is merely water. As the boy tells the class about how his father studies frogs and brought back this specimen from the rain forest of South America, the teacher holds up a map of South America for the children to see while the boy talks about the frog. At one point, the boy quickly opens the jar and sips from it. The teacher, fearing that he has now likely poisoned himself, screams and then faints, dropping the map next to her. Her husband, the principal at the school, is walking down the hall and hears his wife scream. He enters the room to find a room full of very shocked children, a little boy holding an open jar containing a dead "poison frog" in some liquid, and his wife lying on the floor. About the title: 'Kings Play Chess' is part of a sentence that most biology students learn to help them remember all of the elements of classification. The entire phrase is 'Kings Play Chess On Fine Green Sand'. The first letters of each word correspond with Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species. Nice work by all! |

No wonder I wasn't getting the "Kings Play Chess" reference at all. I learned "King Phillip Came Over For Green Spaghetti." Anyway, interesting puzzle. |

Interesting. I've never heard of this phrase (but I'm not a biology major either). When I read the puzzle title I was thinking of the fairy tale of the Frog King, so I asked whether the animal is a frog. This was the second time in a row that I got closer to the solution because I misunderstood a hint. I wonder whether there is a word for this ... |
