Frogs (and other amphibians) are chordates. True, but I was hoping to keep away from this depth of information if possible, as it only relates to the solution in principle. As long as the general category could be discovered (and it has), then one specific feature of it (which has also been discovered), then only the idea of such classifications is needed in order to proceed with the puzzle. ******** SPOILER ******** A student plays a trick on his teacher and the entire class during a show-and-tell time in class. He comes to class with a canister/jar containing a specimen of a species of poison-skinned frog native to South America. The frog inside the jar is a realistic looking toy frog, and the "preserving liquid" in the jar is merely water. As the boy tells the class about how his father studies frogs and brought back this specimen from the rain forest of South America, the teacher holds up a map of South America for the children to see while the boy talks about the frog. At one point, the boy quickly opens the jar and sips from it. The teacher, fearing that he has now likely poisoned himself, screams and then faints, dropping the map next to her. Her husband, the principal at the school, is walking down the hall and hears his wife scream. He enters the room to find a room full of very shocked children, a little boy holding an open jar containing a dead "poison frog" in some liquid, and his wife lying on the floor. About the title: 'Kings Play Chess' is part of a sentence that most biology students learn to help them remember all of the elements of classification. The entire phrase is 'Kings Play Chess On Fine Green Sand'. The first letters of each word correspond with Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species. Nice work by all! | ||

Interesting. I've never heard of this phrase (but I'm not a biology major either). When I read the puzzle title I was thinking of the fairy tale of the Frog King, so I asked whether the animal is a frog. This was the second time in a row that I got closer to the solution because I misunderstood a hint. I wonder whether there is a word for this ... | ||
