I had a peculiar childhood scrund about airplanes & have since learned that many other children had it, too. It is NOT about such obvious things as what holds the plane up or whether air travel is more dangerous than ground travel. What is it? |

Did you get this scrund by looking at planes on the ground? Pictures of planes? Reading about planes in books? Flying on planes? Seeing planes overhead? Having a family member fly on planes? Is it about planes in particular and not air travel in general? Does it apply to all planes equally? Does it apply to Cessnas? 747s? Harrier jets? B-52s? Stealth bombers? Biplanes? Ultralights? The Wright Flyer? The Spirit of St. Louis? Does it apply to hot air balloons? Hang gliders? Helicopters? Saturn V rockets? Cruise missiles? Predator drones? |

Is it related to something inside the plane ? outside? Is it about that they believe that the airplane is very small since far off object looks small? They believe that it's a bird? |

Plane fuel relevant? Pilots relevant? Sectioning of the inside of a plane relevant? Plane wheels relevant? Jet engines relevant? Plane crashs relevant? |

I had the illogical fear that if I watched a plane flying overhead, I might somehow cause it to explode or crash. The author Don DeLillo has a character thinking this, too, so I know it was not only me. |

The relevant phase of the plane crash: Before the plane falls? While the plane falls? During the crash? After the crash? You said that the outside of the plane is relevant, so the scrund doesn't have to do with anything that happens inside the plane in case of a plane crash, right? Is the cause of the crash relevant (e.g. technical problems)? Relevant how the plane is damaged in a plane crash? Relevant how persons inside the plane are harmed in a crash? Relevant how the plane protects the persons? Relevant what to do when leaving the plane after the crash is dangerous (e.g. due to dangerous surroundings)? Security measures relevant? Emergency exits relevant? Slides leading out of the plane relevant? Does the scrund apply to crashs on land? Does it apply to crashs over water (ditchings)? |

Does it have to do with whether the engines fail, or whether it is rather caused by structural damage to the rest of the plane? |

Does it apply to engine failures? lightning strikes? bird strikes? structural failures? loss of control? Does it involve planes colliding in midair? Does it involve fire? explosions? water? |

Did you think that a plane crash usually involved 2 planes crashing together, like a car crash? |

In fact, this is a very rare sort of plane crash. What is not very rare is my misjudging the difficulty of a puzzle--I thought this one would be much harder. Please check out my new one!! |

Nimue, I love your story - I can empathize. The science fiction novel, "Millennium" [and its not so great film adaptation] is a suspense story that deals exactly with what you describe. In fact, it's the major event in the novel. And if you've seen the movie "Hot Fuzz," there is a great bit in which Simon Pegg explains that they are no longer "traffic accidents" but, rather, collisions, because "accident" means that someone was to blame. |

Actually, Fiona, in Hot Fuzz he explains they're called collisions for the opposite reason: because accident implies NO one is to blame. (It was relevant in context, because in the movie he suspected the "traffic collision" they found was actually a murder.) |

Oh, geez, you're right, and that was a huge brain fart that I did there. I've watched the film only 15 or 16 times, and can recite most of the dialogue, yet I am arrogant enough that I demand you to forget my rookie error. Hot red face here re Hot Fuzz. Okay, I'll allow you to josh me 2 more times. TWO more times ONLY! Oh, and have you seen "Paul"? I liked it, but I adore Hot Fuzz. Especially when they repeatedly leaped through the air firing all guns simultaneously. And when... aw, geez, I could talk about it until the cows come home. And then I'd tell the cows about it. Cheerios, Fiona |
