Violetta is a law-abiding old lady. Vernon is a vicious criminal. But there is an unusual thing that they have in common, & it's related to the descriptions I have given of them. What is it? |

Does the unusual thing have something to do with daily habits or chores? (such as brushing teeth or reading the news?) |

Will he soon reach a point where he is safe from jail? It's irrel whether he was tried & acquitted, making him safe because of double jeopardy or never suspected. Is the idea of having escaped some fate relevant - ie Vernon has escaped jail and Violetta has so far escaped dying? no: Here's a HINT: Valerie, a grocery store cashier whose customer left in a hurry, has the same unusual property as Vernon & Violetta. |

You're all OWT (on the wrong track), so here's ANOTHER hint: Describe Vernon's situation in one sentence. Then describe Violetta's probable future in one sentence in one sentence. This is close enough for me to declare a ***** SPOILER ************ I bet most of you have often heard & maybe even used the common sentences "He got away with murder" & "She'll live to be 100." But these sentences are almost used non-literally, to mean "He got away with a lot" & "She's very healthy & will live a long life."So Vernon & Violetta are similar in that a sentence that is commonly used non-literally applies to them literally. Virgil, as Clever Hannah observed, has literally painted himself into a corner. And what about grocery clerk Veronica, whose customer departed suddenly & prematurely? She was literally left holding the bag! Please don't be left without my new puzzle, which is at the bottom of the page. |

There are lots of other cases of this sort: Suppose you have 2 acquaintances, Peter & Paul, & you rob the first to pay the second. Or suppose you have a cat who's trapped in a bag & you have to let it out. Or you're a tailor who's so sloppy that you're literally walking on pins & needles. And didn't Buzzard once post a puzzle about a dog who literally barked up the wrong tree? Does anyone what has become of Buzzard, by the way? I haven't seen her on the forum in years, alas! |
