In a circle, one full score, Twenty boots lying on the floor, Old they are, yet not in decay, Whence their provenance, who can say? |

These boots, then, do they belong To H/A/Ms? H/A/Fs? or a mixed throng? Old these boots are, you say; I'll ask LTPF lists centuries/decades, if I may? |

Far be it from me to split hairs but are the 20 boots actually 10 pairs. And are the boots' former wearers now departed Leaving stricken relatives broken hearted Is the answer to the above is Aye By some violent means did they die? And becuase I'm running out of rhymes And relevant jobs or crimes? One more question in tone conciliatory Does this puzzle involve the military? (that was awful I know) |

These boots, then, do they belong To H/A/Ms? H/A/Fs? or a mixed throng? Old these boots are, you say; I'll ask LTPF lists centuries/decades, if I may? H/A/Ms are the folk you seek; Of no others do I speak. And for rhyme I'll thpeak with a lithp, Of Century the twentieth, decade the fifth. Far be it from me to split hairs but are the 20 boots actually 10 pairs. And are the boots' former wearers now departed Leaving stricken relatives broken hearted An excellent question, sure, 'tis true and the bereaved relatives sure are blue, For ten men twenty boots once wore, And their loss grieved their families full sore. Is the answer to the above is Aye By some violent means did they die? And becuase I'm running out of rhymes And relevant jobs or crimes? Not sure you could call it violence Nor that a crime did cause their death They were sailors, this much is known, Who have taken their last breath. One more question in tone conciliatory Does this puzzle involve the military? (that was awful I know) Ah, good Peter, sure, you know me, I pray a "Yes" makes you not gloomy.(that was worse...) |

Is relevant a special war? Landing on the Normandy shore? Are the boots inside a house? Or outdoors, eaten by a mouse? Are they in a barrack? Or a boat? Or on the ocean they do float? Are they still there today? Or were they taken away? |

Is relevant a special war? Landing on the Normandy shore? The war's the same, so it goes, Not the same battle, but the same foes. Are the boots inside a house? Or outdoors, eaten by a mouse? Are they in a barrack? Or a boat? Or on the ocean they do float? All of these are somewhat wrong; Though in second and fifth they might belong, If the answer you would spy, Seek to clarify you should try. Are they still there today? Or were they taken away? They'll never be touched, that's a fact, He who'd take them would lack tact. |

Are these boots to found in Davy Jones' locker? or am I completely off my rocker? Did the boat they sailed on happen to sink? resulting in them drowning in the drink? Are the grieving relatives crying into their hankies From the UK or are they yankees? As these boots have obviously been discovered Were the dead sailor's bodies recovered? |

Are these boots to found in Davy Jones' locker? or am I completely off my rocker? Indeed they are, my Irish friend, and as you'll surely see: Did the boat they sailed on happen to sink? resulting in them drowning in the drink? They did not drown, yet met their end, Upon the great North Sea. Are the grieving relatives crying into their hankies From the UK or are they yankees? No Yank or Paddy, Scot or Brit Is found in this sad scene Though many sank, be sure of it, into the watery green. As these boots have obviously been discovered Were the dead sailor's bodies recovered? No bodies; nought but shoes are found, Upon the cold and bitter ground. |

Anything but the boots can we see Floating in the dark cold sea? Any clothes, belongings like a pen Any possessions of the poor dead men? What happened to the bodies, though? Did they freeze as the winter snow? Did they evaporate, explode? Would this help to trace a puzzle's code? Would it be helpful here to find The material boots were made of or its kind? How did the boots avoid the end Which vanished the bodies of sailors-friends? |

Were the sailors at death shod Wearing these boots, all twenty odd? Were they killed by scale and fin, Or was it time that did them in? Did the boots float far and wide, Crossing the waters on the tide, While all on land them forgot, Till they washed up on (a) sandy plot? |

From Germany do the sailors come? Or are the wives French that now are glum? While it's irrelevant what the sailors are like, Truly they are from the Third Reich. Anything but the boots can we see Floating in the dark cold sea? Shattered material, lost in the sea, Along the floor, a field of debris. Any clothes, belongings like a pen Any possessions of the poor dead men? I suppose it's possible, but nothing has been told, Of anything these long dead men either bought or sold. What happened to the bodies, though? Did they freeze as the winter snow? Did they evaporate, explode? Would this help to trace a puzzle's code? Entirely possible; learn the bodies' curse, That laid them out to die for better or for worse. I suppose that they might have evaporated, Though I think it's more likely that they suppurated. Would it be helpful here to find The material boots were made of or its kind? How did the boots avoid the end Which vanished the bodies of sailors-friends? I dunno the material, but I have a mind In order to survive, the boots had a tougher rind. Were the sailors at death shod Wearing these boots, all twenty odd? Indeed they were wearing these shoes, As at last they paid their dues. Were they killed by scale and fin, Or was it time that did them in? Time it might have been, the answer here is yopish, But surely they weren't killed, by any kind of yo'fish. Did the boots float far and wide, Crossing the waters on the tide, While all on land them forgot, Till they washed up on (a) sandy plot? They didn't travel far, a few miles or so, as down into the water they did go. |

I ask forgiveness for my double post But just one question in my mind is lost. Were the boots of ordinary navy sort, Or serve a special purpose while away from port? |

Twelve men in a dingi, no water, no bread, the sinking ship in a hurry they fled. No chance to survive, no rescue in sight. Was it, that from their own hands they died? Two men stayed (not counting the dog), and continued their way through sun, rain and fog. If this is the story you have in mind, let me just stay aside, please be so kind. |

Did the men got into their watery tomb Because of a torpedo or a bomb? The first cause is surely here, Torpedoes, guns, explosives did sear The ship which sank to the ocean deep But upon these men death then did creep. They knew for certain they'd never grow old As about them the sea turned dark and cold. Were the boots of ordinary navy sort, Or serve a special purpose while away from port? I'm sure some special purpose they did fill, But any boots may this do, Whether climbing o'er a hill, Or sailing on the ocean blue. Twelve men in a dingi, no water, no bread, the sinking ship in a hurry they fled. No chance to survive, no rescue in sight. Was it, that from their own hands they died? While true they left their ship in haste, Though knew no hope, their lives to waste, Possibly they hoped to see the day, And even sang the night away, But I doubt their own lives they took, As never to see a babbling brook, They hoped and sighed, and called and cried, For rescue ships in vain did look. Two men stayed (not counting the dog), and continued their way through sun, rain and fog. If this is the story you have in mind, let me just stay aside, please be so kind. But while scarce few escaped the battle, And most were left behind to rattle, This story is not familiar, I'm sure it's most peculiar. It sure must be quite a potboiler, May I hear it, after the $p01ler? |

I'll tell it, in my words, not off the shelf. The story is peculiar by itself. But for the moment just answer me that: Was among the few who got rescued a cat? (Then we'd better wait until Woubit arrives, he might be fond of any cat that survives.) |

Were the boots rescued from the ocean's green To in museum be placed and seen? To form a memorial or a brave men's grave? Or are they still in water, with their owners brave? |

Was bitter cold the cause of death; Freezing with their final breath? Or did the fated sailors drown, Sinking lower, down and down? Did the men remove their boots While in the boat, in sailor suits? Or were they kicked off in the sea? I do request, please answer me. |

Was bitter cold the cause of death; Freezing with their final breath? Or did the fated sailors drown, Sinking lower, down and down? Either of these could work, you see, Drowning or freezing in the North Sea. Whichever it was, indeed they sank Into the ocean, dark and dank. Did the men remove their boots While in the boat, in sailor suits? Or were they kicked off in the sea? I do request, please answer me. Neither of these guesses is true, You're getting closer, I answer you. |

Did boots slide off the soldiers' feet Without the will of hearts that beat? Perchance the boots filled up to top With water, and they did not stop? Is what the boots were made of at All relevant? (And that is that.) |

Did boots slide off the soldiers' feet Without the will of hearts that beat? Perchance the boots filled up to top With water, and they did not stop? The boots are filled with water, true But they didn't slide away, you see. If so, they'd not be in a round shape; soon the answer may be found. Is what the boots were made of at All relevant? (And that is that.) As for their make, it doesn't really matter, They might as well have been made by a hatter. In terrible fate the men did meet, are the boots still on corpses' feet? Not any more; They sit on the floor, Soles, toes and hair Are no longer there. An OOPS for you, by the by: "They might have drowned," once said I, But they froze to death. Unless their teeth chattered, I'd guess their shoes would be far more scattered. |

Did all of the sailors go huddle together, Attempting protection from freezing cold weather? But failing, they perished, and sank to the floor Still grasped in this huddle -- providing this lore? Presto, my friend, you have uncovered The truth; to be sure, the SPOILER's discovered! Finally someone does divine How they sank beneath the rime For likely they sank under the spray, Eventually to become fish's prey. But first they hopefully joined hands And believed they'd again see land; But 'tis unlikely that they'd know That the British feared to slow And rescue them. For an untersee-boat Might sink them, and that's all she wrote! So the sailors in vain did wait And froze to death; now they are late. This occurred in 1941 to the Bismarck; now the puzzle is done! |
