Rbruma, this looks clever - and I'm sure that you're clever. I just want to make sure that you're not diabolical.

You appear to give us 3 important ones: he, she, and them.

Will you give us names, please, for each person or group of persons, so that we'll know how many people we need to consider?

Frex: Trotsky was killed. A lot of Stalin followers thought that it was right... Mrs. Trotsky felt ... Mrs. Trotsky's lover disagreed...

I'm not normally this sneaky, but I need to ask. Because we love you. And we don't want to go hunting you down.

Crazily, perhaps, the first thing I thought of was General Woundwort in Watership Down.

And the second thing I thought of was Spike the vampire in Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

But I'm going to wait for you to answer Doriana.

Okay, yawning my head off, nearly 3:30 in the morning here in Miami.

Cheers, all.

Honestly, I haven't a clue - apart from Socrates carried out his own death sentence, thereby executing himself. but maybe many people were executed that way, so was it Socrates?

was she his wife? Indeed daughter? Socrates had only 3 sons -- known by history -- so no

Enough for the

******* SPOILER *******

Xanthippe, the wife of Socrates, is probably as famous as her husband. She was mentioned from Aristotle, through Shakespeare to Edgar Allan Poe.

This particular puzzle came out from a story I recalled. When Socrates -- it is told -- was awaiting his death sentence to be put into practice, an angry Xanthippe came in and started to cry, saying: "My dear Socrates, you are unjustly killed!"

Socrates answered: "And you would have preferred for me to be JUSTLY killed?"

And the rest is history :-)

The title was a hint to the famous Socrates irony.

Thanks to all who participated.

I'm sad she didn't respond - "Yes, actually."
