Yes, I saw the post in the chatroom. Interesting. RECAP: ********* A man was driving a vehicle in NYC in August - this August, but before the storms, which are not relevant. It is _not_ a passenger vehicle. Something happened to his vehicle which endangered his life, exact cause not known. It is related, indirectly, to ice, but there was no ice on the roads. |

The truck hit something. (Explore?) But because he was driving a salt-dispensing truck, his life was saved - possibly because of the salt, possibly just because of the configuration of the truck. our gritter lorries have spraying things at the back but I seem to remember that they have something sticking out at the sides as well - I was thinking these protrusions might have scraped against something or caught on something Well, the US trucks apparently have a hopper thing on the back to distrubute the salt, and this tilted and caught on something, and saved him. did the top of the truck hit something? Not the top - the entire truck. did it go into a tunnel? No - explore. hit a road sign? no; it was not on a road. Just a little bit more and you will have it! Remember, this is a _lateral puzzle_ with a typical lateral puzzle twist in the solution. |

was it on a railway line? in a car park? at an aerodrome? did the truck smash into something and the impact caused the hopper to lift, then that caught on something and prevented the truck going even further into the thing? was the truck just leaving or entering the depot? the garage? YES! a petrol station? ********SPOILER*********** While drwoning my sorrows and trying to cool off with an iced coffee at the local Starbucks, I saw a headline in the NY Times that attracted my attention, so I had to spring the $2 for a copy. This was from Augut 18. A salt-spreading truck had driven through the wall of the 2nd-story garage, where it had been driven for maintenance. It was 3/4 of the way out, and only the fact that the hopper part tilted and caught prevented it from plunging, with its driver, to the sidewalk. I've been in NYC, but only in the summertime, and I'd just as soon leave it that way. Thx to all the brillilant posters, and esp. to Shez! |
