A man attempted suicide and tried to make it look like murder. Because he failed, people knew it was not murder. How? |

Did he hang himself? Try to suffocate himself by placing something over his head? Seeing as the method of death obviously didn't work, is it merely relevant that had it been murder, the murderer would have clearly realized that he had not been "properly" hanged or suffocated, and "corrected" it? Whereas he couldn't because he was unconscious? |

To clarify: The man attempted suicide by first taking a number of sleeping pills to eventually knock himself out and then ("yes AND no") hanging himself. Something went awry and he did not die. It was obvious that it could not be a murder because a conscious murderer would have been able to correct whatever went awry. We are to find out the method of the "murder" and the error. Is that correct so far? |

To clarify: The man attempted suicide by first taking a number of sleeping pills to eventually knock himself out and then ("yes AND no") hanging himself. Right. The "yes and no" stems from the fact that he did plan to hang himself, but... Something went awry and he did not die. Yes It was obvious that it could not be a murder because a conscious murderer would have been able to correct whatever went awry. Sort of, yes. Don't focus too much on this question. We are to find out the method of the "murder" and the error. Is that correct so far? Just the error; you know the method of the "murder." |

Was the rope (or other hanging implement) too long? No i iz awlready confuseded kitteh...*sigh* I'll RECAP -- you're all very close to the solution. A man attempted to commit suicide and make it look like murder (framing his wife) by swallowing sleeping pills and hanging himself. However, he made a crucial mistake and was discovered, alive, by his wife. Because of his mistake, the police knew that it was a failed suicide attempt and not an attempt at murder. HINT: Try not to overthink this...it's very simple. |

Did he plan to fall asleep and then fall off something into a noose? whereas he fell in another direction and his head cleared the noose entirely? Nope... did he fail to hang himself because he fell unconscious before getting around to sticking his head in the noose? ...but Yep. **********SPOILER********** A man wanted to commit suicide and frame his wife for murdering him. He decided to do this by swallowing sleeping pills with his morning coffee (he and his wife had coffee together), then, after she left, quickly setting up a noose and hanging himself, so that the police would think she'd drugged and hanged him before leaving. However, the sleeping pills took effect after he'd set up the noose but before he'd stuck his head in it. His wife came home earlier than expected and found him unconscious on the floor below a noose; thus, the police knew right away that it was a suicide attempt. Nice work everyone, nice solve Shez. Let me see what you think of my next puzzle down below. |
