I told Balin I would post a third part to my (now) Rulebreaker Trilogy, so here it is!

The goal of this final puzzle is to break the rule I've been using in my previous two rulebreakers ('Rules are meant to be broken...' and 'A Valentine Rulebreaker'). Both of these were two part puzzles where the goals were to find a phrase, using clues provided by my rule in the answers to questions provided by solvers, and to find the reason behind the phrase.

Since the goal of this puzzle is to break my rule, I shall provide a phrase from the start. If you want a question answered normally, ask it as usual. If you want it answered by the rule, using the provided phrase as a reference (to maybe help you break the rule), ask the question IN CAPITAL LETTERS PLEASE. Anything not pertaining to the puzzle can be in italics as usual.

(If this is confusing, don't hesitate to ask me to clarify anything. I'm typing this at 4 AM before I go to work.)

Shall we begin? The phrase is as follows...

"Today is a good day for someone else to die."

(Bonus points to anyone who can tell me where this quote came from!)

Sounds familiar - can't place it though.

IS TODAY A GOOD DAY FOR SOMEONE ELSE TO DIE?
IS TODAY A GOOD DAY FOR ME TO DIE?
IS TODAY A GOOD DAY FOR YOU TO DIE?
IS TODAY A GOOD DAY?
IS TODAY A DAY?
IS TODAY GOOD?

WILL YOU DIE TODAY?
DID YOU DIE?
DID SOMEONE DIE TODAY?
DID SOMEONE DIE?
WHAT IS MY NAME?
IS A FERRET BLUE?
DID A FERRET DIE?

Is today really a good day for someone else to die?

Did I tell you I've been participating in Back To Middle-Earth Month and in my latest story, someone was prevented from dying? :-D I just got a review comparing one of my fics to one of the best fic authors we both know. *blushes madly* Such a very high compliment...

Tortie, I think you confused your sister, with the way to ask questions. Otherwise, I'm not sure why her first question is in lowercase...

Sounds familiar - can't place it though. That's ok, I'm not expecting anyone to be able to know it without the use of google.

IS TODAY A GOOD DAY FOR SOMEONE ELSE TO DIE? Today good.
IS TODAY A GOOD DAY FOR ME TO DIE? Tomorrow bad, today good.
IS TODAY A GOOD DAY FOR YOU TO DIE? Good today, bad tomorrow.
IS TODAY A GOOD DAY? Good today.
IS TODAY A DAY? Are you good today?
IS TODAY GOOD? I'm good today.

WHAT DAY IS TODAY? Today Thursday for you.
IS TODAY MY BIRTHDAY? Maybe, Robert's birthday hopefully good today though.
WILL YOU DIE TODAY? Today, no. This good.
DID YOU DIE? Someone did.
DID SOMEONE DIE TODAY? Someone did!
DID SOMEONE DIE? Someone was probably killed.
WHAT IS MY NAME? For it must be today!
IS A FERRET BLUE? Good ferrets are blue today.
DID A FERRET DIE? Someone probably killed the ferret.
WHO ELSE DIED? To say today would jinx it.
WHO DIED? To be, or not? That's the question today.

Is today really a good day for someone else to die? According to the "person" who said it, yes. Better than the one who says it dying, right? At least from the perspective of the one saying it.

Did I tell you I've been participating in Back To Middle-Earth Month and in my latest story, someone was prevented from dying? No you did not, cool though. :-D I just got a review comparing one of my fics to one of the best fic authors we both know. *blushes madly* Such a very high compliment... Indeed! Congrats

Is Discworld's Death relevant? Would it be better if we could figure out how to ask the questions in "SMALL CAPS"? (I can't remember how to shrink them...)

IS IT A GOOD DAY FOR DEATH (SEE ABOVE)?
Is it a good day for Death?
IS IT A GOOD DAY FOR THE DEATH OF RATS?
Is it a good day for the Death of Rats?
IS IT A GOOD DAY FOR PENGUINS?
Is it a good day for penguins?
IS THERE A DEATH OF PENGUINS?
Is there a Death of Penguins?

I can haz cheezburgur?

Is Discworld's Death relevant? To the rule, no. To the origin of the quote, yes in the sense that if the one saying it did die they would be meeting Discworld's Death. Would it be better if we could figure out how to ask the questions in "SMALL CAPS"? Nope, I'm fine with them like this. I just figured it would be easier for people to hit "capslock" and ask questions then to have to format everything. (I can't remember how to shrink them...)

IS IT A GOOD DAY FOR DEATH (SEE ABOVE)? Today good.
Is it a good day for Death? It would be good for him if he was kept busy by people dying during the events that took place after the quote.
IS IT A GOOD DAY FOR THE DEATH OF RATS? Today good too.
Is it a good day for the Death of Rats? If he believes it to be so.
IS IT A GOOD DAY FOR PENGUINS? Penguins good today.
Is it a good day for penguins? As long as they had plenty of fish.
IS THERE A DEATH OF PENGUINS? Not today, tomorrow may be good.
Is there a Death of Penguins? At one point in the books (can't remember which) there was a Death for everything. Now the only ones left are Death, the Death of Rats, and the Death of Fleas (I believe).

I can haz cheezburgur? Hmmmm...only if you can break my rule! MUAHAHAHA!

THEREFORE ULMO UPROOTED AN ISLAND WHICH LONG HAD STOOD ALONE AMID THE SEA, FAR FROM EITHER SHORE, SINCE THE TUMULTS OF THE FALL OF ILLUIN; AND WITH THE AID OF HIS SERVANTS HE MOVED IT, AS IT WERE A MIGHTY SHIP, AND ANCHORED IT IN THE BAY OF BALAR, INTO WHICH SIRION POURED HIS WATER.

I thought you might have been. =D

THE HILLS ARE ALIVE WITH THE SOUND OF MUSIC
WITH SONGS THEY HAVE SUNG FOR A THOUSAND YEARS
THE HILLS FILL MY HEART WITH THE SOUND OF MUSIC
MY HEART WANTS TO SING EVERY SONG IT HEARS

MY HEART WANTS TO BEAT LIKE THE WINGS OF THE BIRDS THAT RISE FROM THE LAKE TO THE TREES
MY HEART WANTS TO SIGH LIKE A CHIME THAT FLIES FROM A CHURCH ON A BREEZE
TO LAUGH LIKE A BROOK AS IT TRIPS AND FALLS OVER STONES ON ITS WAY
TO SING THROUGH THE NIGHT LIKE A LARK WHO IS LEARNING TO PRAY

(If you don't know what that's from, you really need to be poked, Tortiesibling =P)

Due to the lack of punctuation, I'm treating this as one question. Day is done, gone the sun...

(If you don't know what that's from, you really need to be poked, Tortiesibling =P) It's from The Sound of Music, duh!

(Excuse the lack of CAPS, copy/pasted lyrics. Please answer one for CAPS, one for no caps, divided by a / if you like)

Day is done, gone the sun?
From the lakes, from the hills, from the sky?
All is well, safely rest?
God is nigh.?
Fading light dims the sight?
And a star gems the sky, gleaming bright?
From afar, drawing near?
Falls the night.?
Thanks and praise for our days?
Neath the sun, neath the stars, neath the sky?
As we go, this we know?
God is nigh.?

(Excuse the lack of CAPS, copy/pasted lyrics. Please answer one for CAPS, one for no caps, divided by a / if you like) Only this time though. Those answered by rule in capitals.

Day is done, gone the sun? TODAY IS A.../sun's not gone yet
From the lakes, from the hills, from the sky? FOR TODAY THE LAKES ARE PRETTY./and the hills are alive right?
All is well, safely rest? A ROSE BY ANY OTHER NAME WOULD SMELL AS SWEET?/I will rest later.
God is nigh.? FOR TODAY, MAYBE./...
Fading light dims the sight? A TISKET AND TASKET EQUAL THE BASKET./Pretty image
And a star gems the sky, gleaming bright? ELSE THE STAR FADES AWAY./Shiny!
From afar, drawing near? FOR TODAY MAY BE CLOSE./Closer, closer...
Falls the night.? TODAY A NIGHT MAY BE BORN./OMG, the sky is falling?
Thanks and praise for our days? THANK YOU TODAY!/I did!
Neath the sun, neath the stars, neath the sky? TODAY IS NEATH THE SUN./We are the knights who say neath!
As we go, this we know? A KNIGHT WILL GO TODAY./We do?
God is nigh.? ONCE AGAIN, FOR TODAY, MAYBE.../...

btw, all of her questions were irrelevant to the puzzle when not asked to be answered by the rule. I was just messing with her.

Asking it in caps gets it answered by the rule; not in caps without the rule. Or in italics, I guess, but my wrists have been sore these past couple days and I've not felt like formatting. *sigh* They're all right for now.

TODAY IS GOING TO BE A VERY GOOD DAY? For a moment.
TODAY IS GOING TO BE A VERY BAD DAY? For a moment.
TODAY IS GOING TO BE A GOOD DAY? For a moment.
TODAY IS GOING TO BE A BAD DAY? For a moment.

Is the word "today" important to the rule? It's not important to the rule, except for the fact that it is in the phrase that the rule uses.

Remember, the rule was originally written such that when questions are answered by the rule, the answers contain words from a phrase that people were looking for. Now the goal is to break my rule (think code) which I follow to decided what word(s) in the phrase will be given in the answer to the question. This is why I provided the phrase at the begining of the puzzle, rather than have people solve for the phrase.

Is the answer you give the only possible answer you could give for a specific question? Or does the answer you give just need to comply with certain rules which allow different options? (For instance it must have words of length 3, 1, and 6, which could be "For a moment" or "For a monkey" Or "Was I killed?"

Is the answer you give the only possible answer you could give for a specific question? yope-ish, I could phrase my answers multiple ways, but there are certain parts to my answers which are constant based on the question. Or does the answer you give just need to comply with certain rules which allow different options? yope, doyd of "options"(For instance it must have words of length 3, 1, and 6, which could be "For a moment" or "For a monkey" Or "Was I killed?" it's not like this though, my "options" have to do with the irrelevant parts of my answers

What you know so far. The first word of the question is the only relevant word. It is the letters in that first word that are important, not the word itself (ex: santa and satan would return the same answers if put at the begining of a question).

How do we know the last part? Of the answer? If this is what you mean, there is no "last part" to the answer. There are just the words that come from the phrase, they could go anywhere in the answer that I want them to go. The goal is to figure out why I put only certain words from the phrase into the answer. There is a very specific method that determines the words of the phrase that are revealed in the answer (right now you know that the letters in the first word of the question is the only part of the question that is relevant to determining the answer).

If this is not what you wanted, please clarify what you meant.

Ok, so I was working on answering all of these (up to Balin's post, Gregory was crossposting) for about 5 hours now (multitasking a little)...and stupid me was doing it right on screen, and not on a saveable document. So to cut a long story short, my page just refreshed itself (no idea why), and all that work is gone!!!!! I will try again tomorrow to retype out all of the answers *headdesk* but I beg you guys, please don't post any more questions to be answered by the rule until I answer what is already here!!!!! Other questions about the puzzle are perfectly fine (the only other thing I will accept at this point is the alphabet, which I'm surprised nobody has tried yet). right now I shall go to bed...with the impending thought of more hours of work in my mind...

I meant, how do we know that "Santa" and "Satan" are the same? (In response to your summary of what we know so far) I don't recall us ever determining that. I had mentioned that it was just the letters in the first word that were relevant. I was tired when I posted about that summary and probably did reveal a bit more than you guys truly knew at that time. I am telling you that they are equivalent :-)

gud mornin mai tortiesibling, hao yuo iz? would be better if my original answers to all of these hadnít gone away when the page refreshed itselfÖnow I am typing this in word, and will copy/paste it when done. Sorry for the delay everyone!

were you answering the postal codes as if they were simply two-letter combinations? or for the state's full name? or would it not matter?

were you answering the postal codes as if they were simply two-letter combinations? or for the state's full name? or would it not matter? I only look at what letters are there. I'm not going to insert imaginary letters into the question as that would make it harder, lol. It would matter if the full state name was written out vs the two letter abreviation.

Also of note, all of the "double words" except "wisecracks" yielded "today today". And when Cambridge, Mauve and Sesame were combined with eachother (but not llamas or wisecracks) they produced "today today" as well. However, sesamesesame did not for some reason. However, And boogaboogaboogabooga produces the same result as boogabooga and booga but boogaboogabooga does not. I'm going to explore both of these.

Btw, when I say "BOOGA (x#)" where # is a number, it means repeat the word BOOGA x times in a single word because I'm too lazy to type it all out.

BLOOPER: SESAMESESAME is 'today today' I must have done something wrong when following my rule earlier. Sorry about that.

I don't have the time to answer the rest of these right now. They will be answered by tommorow night (most likely). I can see a lot of them will be 'today today' however.

BLOOPER: LLAMAS by itself should have been answered 'today die' NOT 'today today' sorry about all of the confusion. Remember, I was answering A LOT of these at the same time the other day (only got 4 hours of sleep after that one). I only just realized this mistake.

And now for the rest of the answers you've all been waiting for...

RECAP of things you know: 1. Asking questions both with and without the question is mostly useless, and highly annoying. 2. The words I return are from the phrase the rule uses, meanings of the words are not relevant. 3. Answers given to capitalized questions contain words from the phrase at the start of the puzzle. The goal is to figure out why I returned those specific words and not the others, this would be breaking the rule (or cracking the code as I also like to put it in my mind). 4. The number of words in the question is irrelevant. 5. Using words from the phrase in the question is no different than using any other word. 6. Although now I havenít been adding other words recently (because itís time consuming), in the answers provided, only the words that are in the original phrase are relevant to solving the puzzle. 7. The only options I have to how I answer the questions are what irrelevant words to add to the answer. 8. Only the first word is relevant in the question, and I accidentally revealed that more specifically, itís the letters in the first word that are relevant. 9. Hyphenated words are treated as one word.

February 2010 in Torrington. As for what they performed..."Liberal Shop of Horrors" hadn't yet come out, but they did a bunch of songs from that (to save space, I'll list track numbers: 1 [the opener] through 8, 10-12, 15, 16, 18, possibly 19, 20 [the conclusion], 21 [obviously, the most recent Lirty Dies]). They did a lot from the four previous albums as well - the only ones from "I'm So Indicted" that I can remember were the Korea one and "Here's to You, Reverend Robertson." Come to think of it, I don't think they did anything from "Springtime for Liberals," but from "Campaign and Suffering," they did...lemme see, 2, 3 (one of my favorites), and 4 (my dad's favorite - he went with me) - from "Obama Mia!" they did 2, a variant on 9 with the Japanese automakers (Toyota brake problems), 11 (the pre-intermission song), 12, and 19. And I think I'm forgetting some somewhere in there, but that's all I can remember right now.

Oh, and if you ever get to see them live, do so. You know how at theaters, they give you the typical boring fire warnings? Well, this time they were in CapSteps style - "In the event of an emergency, please sit still and wait for a federal bailout." Another one, talking about the group: "The Capitol Steps have been on several TV shows, such as [something I forget], 'Good Morning America,' and 'Desperate House Members.'"

One more factoid: I was sitting two seats behind then-Governor Rell. I wouldn't have noticed if my dad hadn't pointed it out. And no, I didn't go say hi to her - lots of people were doing that and I didn't want to feel like a hassle.

I can't even remember what point I started on. The point is, if you can go see them live, you definitely should.

these are all correct A+ on your math skills...now what do you want from me?

I see you found a pattern though, but you need to put in words what you are seeing, and ask if relevant. Don't just give me math problems, because those can be interpreted many ways. Thank you!

okay, so the phrases sometimes repeated themselves, and sometimes not (which is why some of the numbers are multiples, and some aren't), right? Is that relevant?

Ok, so after speaking with my dear sister on the phone (because her phrasing confuses me) this is what I said based on what she said.

The answers I give are individual words (not phrases, please don't call them phrases, it confuses me, there is one phrase and that is the one I gave at the beginning of the puzzle, the answers I give are individual words from the phrase (although multiple 'individual' words may be given together as an answer)).

I'm going to let her think about this some more, and repost a question later. She believed that multiples of prime numbers are important, but she is partly wrong. HINT: What is the opposite of multiplying?

If the phrase were "Is today a good day for somebody else to die" would you simply swap all instances of the word "is" in the answers with the word "today" and vice versa? Or would it be more complicated than that? If there would be a difference with a different phrase other than the transposing of one word with the respective word in the other phrase, would you permit us to ask based on an alternate phrase?

I would, except it would be no different than transposing the words (ie: first word of new phrase would replace 'today' from the original phrase) The only difference would be if the new phrase had a different number of words, in which case my life would become much more complicated, lol.

Divided...by the same value each time? If you mean, 'are all added up letter ('word') values divided by the same number?', then no. But each 'word' value would be divided by the same number(s) each time it was calculated, such that every time that word was used as the first word of the question, the same answer would be given.

Let me know if I didn't properly answer your question, I'm a bit sleepy and may be interpreting it wrong.

o sure balin kitteh, can has recat. in hoomin langwich, but startud with kitteh so yuo is knoez iz mee =P postin for tortiesibling:

The phrase is as follows...

"Today is a good day for someone else to die."

(Bonus points to anyone who can tell me where this quote came from!)

10. Prime numbers are involved in my rule!
11. The answers I give are individual words (not phrases, please don't call them phrases, it confuses me, there is one phrase and that is the one I gave at the beginning of the puzzle, the answers I give are individual words from the phrase (although multiple 'individual' words may be given together as an answer)).

Kaylee believed that multiples of prime numbers are important, but Kaylee is partly wrong.
12. Divisors are involved.

I don't know why I didn't ask this above, but would "SESAME (x 2^n, where n is an integer)" always produce the same result? I noticed that "SESAME x1", "SESAME x2", "SESAME x4", "SESAME x8", x16, and x32 all had the same result. Would x64, x128, x256, etc..? Would that be true for any word x1, x2, x4, x8, x16, x32, x64, ... Would it be true for some x k^n, where k is a constant, and n is the integers... For instance, some might be true for all x 3^n, meaning x3, x9, x27 ... while others for x 4^n, meaning x4, x16, x64 ... And theoretically, could some be the same for all 1^n, meaning simply 1? Or is the trivial case of that a CA? Or am I OTWT?

Would it be true for some x k^n, where k is a constant, and n is the integers... For instance, some might be true for all x 3^n, meaning x3, x9, x27 ... while others for x 4^n, meaning x4, x16, x64 ... for any word x k^n, all answers after it is initially multiplied by k will be the same for any k^n where n is an integer And theoretically, could some be the same for all 1^n, meaning simply 1? I'm not sure what you mean here, though I'm under the impression that it probably isn't relevant. Or is the trivial case of that a CA? unsure, see above Or am I OTWT? With the first part of the question, regarding any "x k^n" stuff, you have a great idea going there. Use this knowledge to figure out what you are missing.

Is k the sum of all letters? The sum of all letters divided by the divisor? Or is it the divisor itself? Same questions for n? k is whatever number you pick to multiply the sum of the letters by. n is the power that k is raised to. You made up the letters, I don't know why you're asking what they are. They are arbitrary numbers that the person with the question picked.

Hey everyone, my life has been super hectic in the last month or so, and I forsee it staying that way until after Comic-Con in July. For this reason, I please ask that any more questions actually be questions about the puzzle in order to solve it and break the rule. Not questions in capitals to be answered by the rule. This is because it takes a lot of time for me to keep doing all the calculations necessary to answer each 'question' and I just don't have the time. Unless people would rather the puzzle stays dormant until at least August? Which I highly doubt :p

OK, I'll try and recap what we know is relevant:

The words in the question are numbered according to their position in the question. Factor trees are relevant, as are prime numbers.

Is a factor tree made according to the number of words in the question? So "To be or not to be" would become 2x3?

Let me try an example: "What" which leads to "today for."

"What" = 23, 8, 1, 20
23+8+1+20=52
52 = 2*2*13 = 22*13

Only 2 individual primes are there, so 2 words in the answer? Or, the highest power is a square, so 2 words in the answer?

2 is the first prime number; 13 is the 6th.
"Today" is the first word in the quote; "for" is the 6th. Important?

My guess:

You add up the letter values of the first word in the question and make a factor tree of the sum. The primes correspond to the words in the answer in the following way: if the first prime (2) appears in the factor tree, the first word does in the answer; if the second prime (3) appears, the second word does, and so forth.

Anywhere near?

*SPOILER* Like my sis said, it's pretty much what Balin said. Once you get to the 11th prime number however, you rotate back through the words starting with the first word for the 11th prime, 2nd word for the 12th prime, etc. I was using a program online to find all the prime number divisors in the sums of the letters of the words, and the list of the first 500 prime numbers on wiki to find which word (it had 10 columns).
