Harrison Ford is the hero in many films. In one scene in one of these films, he is in danger. There is a sound effect accompanying that danger that might surprise you. What is it? |

Is it relevant exactly which movie this is? Is the sound a background noise? A sound made (on screen) by some object or person? A sound effect created by a foley artist? |

Shez: is the sound made by a person? another living thing? a natural phenomenon? music? No to all, but you've done well by eliminating the obvious! |

Peter: Is it a Wilhelm Scream? No; and I'm ashamed I had to look that up, after all I've written and lectured on SFX! But, no. It has been used in the Indiana Jones series. And you're OTRT. I'll go ahead and say that it's an Indy scene. |

Balin and all, I said that this one will be fun and quick, so I want to return to what I'd started to write to Balin before my computer froze. Is the sound a background noise? Yes, and it's also a sound familiar to all fans of this movie. The fun here is in what caused the sound effect. |

is it a sound generated electronically? is it the sound of something scraping against something else? is it the sound of something striking something else? is it the noise of something vibrating? is it a noise captured from the stars? is it the reverberation of the big bang? |

Is the sound effect a person speaking? shouting? laughing? a Group of people doing one of these? Is the sound effect a whip crack? gunfire? sword "swooshing"? or sword clashing? I'm referring here to what the sound is supposed to be in the film, rather than how it's actually made |

Shez wrote: is it a sound generated electronically? No is it the sound of something scraping against something else? is it the sound of something striking something else? You're quick off the mark! I'd say "scraping" - it's definitely a friction sound. Not striking, though. is it the noise of something vibrating? is it a noise captured from the stars? is it the reverberation of the big bang? I love these questions, but maybe you know more about Harrison Ford movies than I do? I really don't know what you're getting at. |

No to all, sorry - but great questions, and you've reminded me of another great film anecdote. I'll tell it later, OK? |

Or the cave collapsing? Is the sound made by movie equipment? (like a camera or boom) Inadvertently? |

is it the noise of that big boulder rolling down the hill? You've got it, Shez! Or the cave collapsing? Is the sound made by movie equipment? (like a camera or boom) Inadvertently? That's an interesting idea! There must obviously have been occasions of this happening. But no, the sound editor came up with the notion, and for a hint, I'll add that he left set to record the noise. So he didn't use the sound stage set and crew; he had noticed something that he heard on a regular basis, and went and recorded that. Oh, and sorry! I forgot to put my name in front of the title of this puzzle. Could a kind moderator help there? |

was it made by running a marble round a jar? was a toilet pan involved? I love these ideas! But no to both. Think of something much larger. Something that most people use every day. It was something that the sound editor used (outdoors, remember), probably every day, and that sound gave him the idea. |

Did he change the sound in any way? Slow it down? Speed it up? Is it the sound of a vehicle? A mechanical device? |

Shez wrote: I believe unscrewing a jar inside a toilet bowl was used in the original War of the Worlds for when the martians emerge from their ship. Really? I haven't read that! That's great! The few talks and papers I've given on the subject dealt with more recent (that is, 1990s) movies, to suit my audience(s). I know of a couple of really neat sound effects used in the Terminator movies - esp T2. If a fair number of people here are familiar with, and want me to start a similar thread, I will. Many thanks to all of you! Fiona |
