There is something that many (if not all) of us have seen probably several times in our lives. When we see it, some of us may think it's funny; others of us may be offended by it; it may cause sadness to some. I see humor in it after hearing someone refer to it as a symptom of a rebellious attitude toward a certain group of people. So...what is 'it'? The title, of course, is a roundabout clue to the solution. I won't answer any questions regarding the title, but it may be helpful to keep it in mind as the puzzle progresses. Bonus points to anyone who figures out the clue once the solution is reached! |

Wearing only one shoe relevant? Walking barefoot? Is there a relevant person? Who does something with the shoe? I'm somewhat stuck on the shoe thingy, so I'll go back to the "certain group of people". You said one aspect of their profession is relevant. Is it related to where they work? when they work? whom they work with? |

Shoes hanging over a telephone wire/power cable? I've heard several different things it can mean... gang territory, death, bullying, military leaving service, etc. |

Shoes hanging over a telephone wire/power cable? I've heard several different things it can mean... gang territory, death, bullying, military leaving service, etc. No, the sight that the puzzle refers to is a single shoe lying by the side of the road. I've heard about the shoes over power cables as well, but the type of rebellion that the puzzle deals with isn't at all violent or something anybody would really find threatening. It's not even as bad as throwing a shoe at a politician. |

I was thinking of the laced pairs of shoes thrown over power lines too, until I saw the hint that only ONE shoe is involved Anyway, is there a relevant reason that a person left that spot wearing/carrying only one shoe? or are you just imagining a particularly humorous reason? |

Is the exact location of such a shoe relevant, or could it be anywhere along any road? Is the type of road relevant? Position along the road relevant? In the city? Outside the city? Is the type of shoe relevant, or could it be any shoe? |

As a shrine? Grave marker? No, simply a discarded shoe on the side of the road, or maybe even on the road Anyway, is there a relevant reason that a person left that spot wearing/carrying only one shoe? Yes, the humorous aspect of seeing a lone shoe is because of this 'relevant reason' or are you just imagining a particularly humorous reason? Ha, I'm not creative enough (well, maybe, but I wouldn't have come up with this one on my own) to imagine the motive behind the "lone shoe" - years ago someone made a connection between this phenomenon and a feeling that many people have that would cause them to rebel harmlessly against certain members of society Is the exact location of such a shoe relevant, or could it be anywhere along any road? Yes, anywhere and any road Is the type of road relevant? No Position along the road relevant? No In the city? Outside the city? Could be either Is the type of shoe relevant, or could it be any shoe? Good q - the observation was made with the assumption that it could be any shoe. When I saw your question it occurred to me that certain types of shoes would more aptly fit with the situation. |

Nobility? The wealthy? Media? Company owners? Factory owners? Salesmen? Athleets? Military? |

The kind(s) of shoe(s) that would perhaps be better suited than others: boots? Yes, this would work sneakers? running shoes? Possibly but less likely slippers? No sandals? Possible but not as likely high heels? Yes, this would work moccasines? No, probably not slip-ons? Maybe court shoes? What is this? dress shoes? Yes, this would be the most likely type ballet shoes? Yes, even this would be possible (and interesting to see) :p The members of society to be rebelled against: Politicians? No Nobility? No The wealthy? Well not as a whole, but some of those being rebelled against may fall into this category Media? No Company owners? Yes-ish, but not quite at this level Factory owners? Another yes-ish, not quite at this level Salesmen? Maybe at this level, yes Athleets? No Military? Not as likely but certainly possible at certain levels |

Ok, so, the sight of a solitary shoe on the side of the road is a possible sign of a very passive and humorous, non-violent rebellion...against who? |

Against authority at all? ...yes, a specific authority figure that is unique to each individual, so its... Against the same person every time? ...not the same person, but the same category of person. if not a parent...boss? Yes! Against a political authority figure? So no **** SPOILER ***** The act of rebellion is against bosses! I once heard a comedian speculate that a lonely shoe on the side of the road is a result of digruntled employees looking for ways to irritate their bosses - they remove a shoe, toss it out the window and say, "I'm going to work with just ONE shoe on today, let's see what the boss has to say about THAT!" The inspiration for the title "To Grandmother's House" is that a grandmother is an old woman, and according to the nursery rhyme there was an old woman who lived in........a shoe!. Nice job! |
