Many people, formerly including me, have a passive scrund about fire. What is it? (A passive scrund is a scrund you take for granted and have never really thought about.)

Fire does not fall into any of the states of matter. Relevant?

If it's not matter, what is it? o.o
Fire, or more technically combustion, is a process, a chemical reaction in which a substance (usually an organic compound, or mixture of such compounds) is oxidized by oxygen gas. The stuff that burns is matter, the gases that are given off are matter, and the light/heat given off is energy, but the fire itself is a process, like freezing, rusting, erosion, etc.

Anyway, as for the puzzle:
Is the scrund about what substances are flammable? Under what conditions things burn? what happens chemically to the matter that is burned?
Or is it more about the implications of fire for humans? for instance how often buildings are destroyed by fire? from what cause people usually die in a fire? or how firefighters respond to a fire?

Oxygen relevant? Air? CO2? Smoke? Heat? Cooking? Embers? Flames? Flames of a different color? Fireworks? Fireballs? Movies relevant? Special effects? Flashpoints? A specific fuel? Did you think embers were only glowing with residual heat from the fire (while they actually glow from ongoing combustion)? Sources of ignition relevant? Fire in a specific device? Such as a car engine? Explosives relevant? Did you think something was fire, which was not? Or the other way around? Getting burn relevant? Relevant how fire spreads? Setting fire with a magnifying glass (or similar) relevant? Did you think something could burn that couldn't? Or the other way around? Building fires relevant? Burning liquids? Gas?

Is this one of the, for ex, horrifying times when paint, or flour, exploded without anyone thinking that it might?

Did you think that the Firefighters cleaned up after themselves e.g. mopping up all the water. In Ireland they don't but I couldn't be sure about the US?

Anything to do with insurance and whether damage caused by firefighting is covered?

******** SPOILER *************
I had always assumed, without ever really thinking about it, that most of the damage caused by fires in a building came from the fire itself. But apparently it comes from the water used to fight the fire. Sorry it was so easy, but maybe my next puzzle won't be. Check it out & see for yourself!

My judgment of whether one of my puzzles was too easy is based entirely on its getting quickly solved. Who solves it is irrel!!
