After firemen extinguish a home, they walk in, But then what do they find? Why, it must be a sin! There's a man on the floor, lying dead, burnt to black. But his manner of death? That's the puzzle to crack. How'd he die? Why's he there? Just what happened this time? (And, if ever you please, ask your questions in rhyme.) |

Hmmm...been a long time since I did poetry. My skills are more than a trifle rusty, I fear... What unhappy happenstance! Was it natural death, perchance? Mayhap it was accidental? Or -- horrors! -- murder, most, most, foul? |

In the fire, did he burn? Or are those his long-dead ashes, stored in an urn? Perhaps he died from breathing smoke? Or did he die from choke or stroke? Is he HA and/or Male? And can we call him Delawail? Sorry, I needed a name to rhyme. Oh by the way [LTPF list of eras/times]? Is this story really true? Let us guess, don't yet give a clue! Was the home he laid in his own? And did he die there? Was he alone? If not, were people there when he was found? Or just when he was heaven-bound? Or course, this assumes he doesn't go to hell. Was he a criminal... LOL? |

When examined after the fact, Was his body still intact? Or were there wounds on the deceased? Was his body unusual in the least? (Aside, of course, from being charred) Was he deformed? mutilated? scarred? |

As he lies there, should we care About the place, the 'where' of 'there'? In a village, town, or cit- y, Where, where, was the fire lit? |

What unhappy happenstance! Was it natural death, perchance? Mayhap it was accidental? Or -- horrors! -- murder, most, most, foul? Don't worry -- there's no murderous bent; His death was just an accident. In the fire, did he burn? Or are those his long-dead ashes, stored in an urn? Perhaps he died from breathing smoke? Or did he die from choke or stroke? This man was burned up by the fire, And that is why he did expire. Is he HA and/or Male? And can we call him Delawail? Sorry, I needed a name to rhyme. Oh by the way [LTPF list of eras/times]? Is this story really true? Let us guess, don't yet give a clue! "Delawail's" a curious name, But it will do, for all the same. He's human-adult-male, OK? For time, assume the modern day. And clues for truth you will not find; I made this up with my own mind. Was the home he laid in his own? And did he die there? Was he alone? If not, were people there when he was found? Or just when he was heaven-bound? Or course, this assumes he doesn't go to hell. Was he a criminal... LOL? The house in which this fellow died Was not the one where he'd reside! Your other guess is far from dull; He was indeed a criminal. But for his crime he'll ne'er atone, For when he died, he was alone. When examined after the fact, Was his body still intact? Or were there wounds on the deceased? Was his body unusual in the least? (Aside, of course, from being charred) Was he deformed? mutilated? scarred? For wounds, your search is not a dud. A bullet hole and loss of blood Befell this chap called Delawail. (He still was, though, intact and male.) As he lies there, should we care About the place, the 'where' of 'there'? In a village, town, or cit- y, Where, where, was the fire lit? My answer shouldn't bring a frown; Assume your average, normal town. (It really doesn't matter much If this were city, town, or such.) |

He's shot in head or back? That's "Nope," And "self-inflicted" gets a Yope. The fire began pre-expiration, As it's his cause of termination. |

Was the shot by his own intent? Or was it an accident? Just to cover all my bases, did the bullet hit any vital places? Because of the blaze, he passed away, But if not would he have died anyway? Did the fire start because of the shot? Sorry, but this is all I've got |

Was the shot by his own intent? Or was it an accident? Just to cover all my bases, did the bullet hit any vital places? The shot's an "oops." And per the title, It didn't hit locations vital. The bullet, though, was not a dud; The gunshot caused a loss of blood. Because of the blaze, he passed away, But if not would he have died anyway? Did the fire start because of the shot? |i{Sorry, but this is all I've got} Did the gunshot directly begin conflagration? That's a No, but if not, his life has no cessation In this puzzle. And if the house didn't catch fire, The new ending would be "Fellow didn't expire." |

Was the trigger pulled by him by name Or is there someone else to blame? Maybe it was a sort of trap Set by an owner for criminal chap? And just one question which puzzles me, Did the bullet hit him directly? Or did it bounce from other thing And hit the chap within eyeblink? |

Did a fire alarm make a sound that startled him into firing a round Or was firing the bullet that failed to miss 'im caused by some other fire safety system, Would his type of crime happen to be that one that abbreviated as B&E to the deceased did the gun belong? or was stealing it one of his deeds so wrong? Was anyone else in the house a man a woman or even a mouse I'm pretty sure this has not been asked but when he died was the dead man masked? |

Was the trigger pulled by him by name Or is there someone else to blame? Maybe it was a sort of trap Set by an owner for criminal chap? The bullet wasn't fired by he, And no, 'twas not a trap, you see. To blame? Part owner, mostly he. (It fired accidentally.) And just one question which puzzles me, Did the bullet hit him directly? Or did it bounce from other thing And hit the chap within eyeblink? The bullet took a straight direction And struck this man without deflection. Did a fire alarm make a sound that startled him into firing a round Or was firing the bullet that failed to miss 'im caused by some other fire safety system, I can clear this with a simple No To all; they were good questions, though. Would his type of crime happen to be that one that abbreviated as B&E to the deceased did the gun belong? or was stealing it one of his deeds so wrong? Yes, the fellow deceased did a crime that you've found; He was simply a burglar, now burnt on the ground. The gun was the owner's, but here's something fun; Our dead guy had failed to steal the gun. Was anyone else in the house a man a woman or even a mouse I'm pretty sure this has not been asked but when he died was the dead man masked? No one else was inside, as I'm sure you can tell, And "the burglar was masked"? That is simply Irrel. |

Will this be a yes, probably not did the heat of the fire cause the shot? A strange feeling I've just felt Did the fire cause something relevant to melt? Did something on to the trigger drip that brought upon this fatal blip? One more rhyme I'm sure I'm able Did he set the gun down e.g upon a table. |

Will this be a yes, probably not did the heat of the fire cause the shot? Not the fire burning hot, But another heat source caused the shot. Like chickens and eggs, the question is hot- Which came first, the fire or the shot? Was he too injured to leave and so fried? Or was he unconscious when he died? Was the fire he died because of caused by the heat source you mentioned above? Was the heat source one most have in a house? And did the fire he try to douse? And wait, I have one question more- Did he drop the gun on the floor? |

Was something cooking in the oven? Can we call the owner McLovin'? Was McLovin' cooking food? And is McLovin' a human, adult dude? Did McLovin himself commit a crime? And did he expire like Delawail at the same time? Is a fireplace what caused the heat That made Delawail his maker meet? |

Like chickens and eggs, the question is hot- Which came first, the fire or the shot? Was he too injured to leave and so fried? Or was he unconscious when he died? The gunshot came first, and then after, the fire, And the burglar's unconscious the time he expired. Was the fire he died because of caused by the heat source you mentioned above? I have to say both Yes and No. (It's not a contradiction though.) Was the heat source one most have in a house? And did the fire he try to douse? And wait, I have one question more- Did he drop the gun on the floor? The source of heat is common in A home or dwelling. Had he been Aware and conscious, he'd have doused The flame that did burn up the house, But since his conscious state was "out," The fire just roared and burned about. Just one more answer, then I'm done; The fellow didn't drop the gun. Was something cooking in the oven? Can we call the owner McLovin'? Was something cooking? That's a Yes, McLovin's odd, but fine, I guess. Was McLovin' cooking food? And is McLovin' a human, adult dude? He's HAM but wasn't cooking. Say, I think you've got a slight FA. Did McLovin himself commit a crime? And did he expire like Delawail at the same time? A pair of Nos Is how it goes. Is a fireplace what caused the heat That made Delawail his maker meet? My answer? I know what to do: The fire wasn't from a flue. |

I'm wondering if the gun's muzzle flash might have caused some escaped gas to light? The gun's bright flash was not the cause Of conflagration, (Now enter, as you take a pause, Deliberation. Was McLovin even home? Or was Delawail all alone? McLovin, Greg, was nowhere near When Delawail was burnt and seared. Is it relevant what food Delawail made? Did anyone get hit with a spade? Yes and No. (Now you know.) Did the food catch fire? Casing poor Delawail to expire? Well, yes, but there's one thing this question lacks; The burglar tried to cook a pair of snacks. Is McLovin still alive? Or did he get to see God live? Now from this q I'm not retreating; McLovin's heart is well and beating. Is McLovin long dead and Abondened the houuse? Is there an animal there? Even a mouse? No to the rest. (It's for the best.) |

Spaghetti and meatballs for an untimely end? Beef stew? Chicken salad? A sandwich, my friend? The other, a vegetable or fruit? Perhaps a starch or a fat for the brute? The first was one you've yet to mention; The second, "veg" -- you've paid attention. Did he try to cook McLovin's pet? Or did he meat from the freezer get? Does it matter what animal the meat was from? If so, was it a cow, a chicken, or McLovin's mum? Barring those, was it mammal or bird? Or insect, fish, or some other word? Did he cook a whole animal live? Was this on the news at 5? The only "Yes" in this whole set: The food he did from freezer get. (The meat, as well, was from a cow And pig, but do remember now: The snack he picked out of the freezer Was partly meat. Is this now easier? To satisfy his lust to chew did he light the barbecue? I hope I do not make you ill When I say "No" to "on the grill." |

Or would it rather be kept in a fridge? Or a freezer? Or did something else this snack give? This is my first try at a versponse rhyme. How did I do? Was my rhyme sublime? Or was it a little bit off-beat? Am I on the right track? (This rhyme's not made of meat ;-) |

I hope not also- what a bore! Dishes are my least favorite chore. Did he attempt to heat his snack? But then things got a bit off track? Before he fell into his grave, Did he try the microwave? Perhaps the stove or toaster oven? Something else that belonged to McLovin? And so these snacks of veg and meat he was in fact unable to eat? Did the snack he dreamt of eating burn up fast while it was heating? Somehow the gun was fired next? I admit, I am perplexed! |

I hope not also- what a bore! Dishes are my least favorite chore. The good news: I didn't go dreaming of them, But I was woke up around three-ish A.M. Did he attempt to heat his snack? But then things got a bit off track? Before he fell into his grave, Did he try the microwave? Perhaps the stove or toaster oven? Something else that belonged to McLovin? He planned to heat his tasty snacks; Before he could, the gun attacks. He'd put the veggie on the stove, The other would be cooked in cove Of oven. But before he could, The gun went off and got him good. And so these snacks of veg and meat he was in fact unable to eat? The FA's cleared; he never ate, For from the fire, he now is "late." Did the snack he dreamt of eating burn up fast while it was heating? Somehow the gun was fired next? I admit, I am perplexed! The gun went off a bit before The fire burnt up the walls and floor. And yes, one snack did burn and start The heated flames which stopped his heart. |

Was there anything wrong with the shells? The gunshot caused blood loss which caused him to lose His consciousness. While he was out cold, his food Caught fire and destroyed him. Related, um, news Says the man would have put out the flames if the dude Were awake. Re the gun: It was never defective, And the cap for its firing? It hadn't been hit. The powder ignited from heat, that is true, And Delawail didn't know squat of the gun Nor touch it. However, I'm certain that you Should know that the burglar and something he'd done Did cause him to suffer the bullet's sharp blow. (That's everything, puzzlers, so now off you go!) |

Did he set the gun somewhere that wasn't very smart? Then it went off, and knocked him out, while the fire stopped his heart? I know he had no knowledge of the gun, but if it were in a bag, he might not know what he had done. Or had McLovin placed the gun, perhaps, atop the stove? Or somewhere else so later on a bullet deeply drove Into the flesh of Delawail, our exsanguinous crook, who had no intention of letting his refreshment overcook? |

I know he had no knowledge of the gun, but if it were in a bag, he might not know what he had done. No, Delawail had never seen or touched the fatal gun, And when it came to him v. pistol... yep, the bullet won. Or had McLovin placed the gun, perhaps, atop the stove? Or somewhere else so later on a bullet deeply drove Into the flesh of Delawail, our exsanguinous crook, who had no intention of letting his refreshment overcook? McLovin hadn't placed the gun on top his fancy stove, But you are getting closer to the gun's locale, by Jove! |

Was it close enough to the stove so that it was heated up and our crook fell flat? Was it under the stove, or above, perhaps, And shot the crook so he'd collapse? Did it shoot him in the foot? the leg? Please, Balin, do not make me beg! For those who'd come to my support, take heart- I'm not the begging sort. ;) |

Was it close enough to the stove so that it was heated up and our crook fell flat? You're right on all this other stuff Except the phrasing "close enough." Was it under the stove, or above, perhaps, And shot the crook so he'd collapse? 'Twas neither over it or under; What's left, that rendered him asunder? Did it shoot him in the foot? the leg? Please, Balin, do not make me beg! Don't think that you are out of luck; The leg is where the bullet struck. For those who'd come to my support, take heart- I'm not the begging sort. ;) Perhaps I'll recap later so That others will give this a go. |

This question shouldn't be forbidden - Is it in the stove, where gun was hidden? |

These types of puzzles, I suppose, I've shunned because I lack the nose For poetry. I'm bent, instead, toward prose. But following the train of question And the answer (or should I say "direction") I see why these merit such affection. Redwine's thinking is in line With many others and also mine A gun in the stove? Yes, seems just fine. So if this solves the puzzle, I expect Another puzzler with great intellect (Which includes you) to interject More puzzles like this while I perfect My skill at rhyming redirect. |

This question shouldn't be forbidden - Is it in the stove, where gun was hidden? My word, you've got it! In the oven The gun was hid by one McLovin. Now here's the end, I'll rub and oil 'er: Presenting now one nice, clean **********SPOILER********** Our burglar "hero," Delawail Di'n't know his crime was soon to fail And he would not end up in jail, But icy cold with skin so pale. He went to rob McLovin's dwelling, And hoped to find some goods for selling. But soon his hunger became telling, And irresistible, compelling. So then he grabbed a frozen piz- za loaded up with cheese and meats. Because he knew his way with eats, He set the oven to preheat...s. And then he found a can of beans. (His mother said, "Son, eat your greens!") He threw them in a pan so clean(s) And tossed them on the stove machine...s With just a splotch of oil. But wait! He didn't know, at any rate, That in the oven was his fate: A loaded gun, a .38. (The homeowner had hid it there With dutiful and special care So burglars wouldn't take his ware And in its place leave normal air.) Recall the oven set "preheat"? The gun did quickly heat up (neat!) And fire. The bullet quickly beat A path into his calf's lean meat. So Delawail lost blood at royal Rate, and quickly fainted. Oil In pan on stove began to boil And lit up like a Tesla coil. Since Delawail was knocked out cold, The fire spread fast, burned bright and bold, And scorched his body uncontrolled. So now he's dead; his tale's been told. Yes, Matt intends To make some more, but it depends On circumstances, means, and ends When I will post them.... Well done, friends! |
