Are they parents conservative Jews as in the branch of Judaism? And Gwendolyn says her parents are "Conservative Jews". And they think she means the political philosophy? Would this work if Gwendolyn and her parents were communists? Socialists? Libertarians? Conservatives? Fascists? Anarchists? Panticommunists (oppose private undergarments)? | ||

I like to tell people that I come from a very narrow, insular Jewish background, where there was only one acceptable way of living & thinking & anyone who didn't toe the line was beyond the pale. This makes most people assume my parents were Orthodox Jews who expected me to be Orthodox as well as marry early & have lots of kids. They figure I must be estranged from my family, since I'm an unmarried & childless atheist who doesn't consider herself Jewish even in a cultural sense. But my particular sort of insular Jewish background was characteristic of many NY Jews: you had to go to college, get an advanced degree, enter a profession, & be liberal. I've done all that -- so my parents have been happy with my lifestyle (although if I had had wanted to pursue a lifestyle they wouldn't have liked, I would have done so.)
