What meant nothing to him was the end of science as they knew it. Yes, this is Potato's recent puzzle statement with just one change. The solution is entirely different, I assure you. |

RECAP: What meant nothing to him was the end of science as they knew it. "He" is an adult, living, male bird who performed some relevant action. Math and evolution are relevant. Google is NOT ALLOWED (anymore) on this puzzle. I'm very sorry to all of you, but once you find certain details, Googling would $poil the puzzle. *evil grin at hidden hint* |

Did he count fewer or more objects the first time? More When he gave the wrong answer, did he answer with a number that was too high or too low? It was just...wrong. Not too high, not too low. |

I'm a little confused about this one... Was the parrot 'supposed' to answer the question wrong? Was it a trick? Did the parrot really not make a mistake? or make a mistake for a legit reason? Did the parrot not know the right word for answering the first question? (As if, for example, they showed him 11 object, but had only taught him to count to 10?) Speaking of which, were the parrot's replies both numbers between 1 and 10? 1 and 20? |

Was a general word like "objects" used for what should be counted? or a specific one (e.g., how many BIRDS are there? Did the first question incorrectly describe the objects to be counted? or equivalently, had the parrot been taught the wrong definition of the object(s)? To clarify, I'm imagining a scenario like the following: The parrot is shown a row of shapes, and asked "how many squares are there?". They intend that he will count them all, but in fact, all but five of the "squares" are really rectangles, and he doesn't count those. Then he is asked "how many circles are there", and correctly says "zero", showing that he isn't merely counting things, but knows the words for shapes too. |

Does either question start with "how many"? Or is the "question" more like an instruction, like "Count the ...whatever"? Was the scene, or picture, or whatever, that the parrot was looking at, identical when he gave the second reply, as when he gave the first reply? How many FA:s have I got? |

Does either question start with "how many"? No Or is the "question" more like an instruction, like "Count the ...whatever"? No, it was a question Was the scene, or picture, or whatever, that the parrot was looking at, identical when he gave the second reply, as when he gave the first reply? Yes How many FA:s have I got? I can't find any obvious ones. You were assuming that the questions started with 'How many', but that's been cleared. |

Was either question phrased in the sense of "Can you tell me... ?", where the "real" question is hidden within a longer, rhetorical question? Was either phrased as "What is the number of... ?" If so, did the parrot think that one of the objects was supposed to have a number ON IT? Was there a good reason for NOT phrasing the questions starting with "How many"? I.e., would there not have been a way to ask the same question in this form? or was it just a coincidence of conversational speech that the question was phrased in some other (possibly more ambiguous) way? |

Both questions starts with "what"? The parrot wasn't asked to do a sum, right? (as in, "what's two and three?) |

Both questions starts with "what"? Yes, sorry, meant to say that originally. The parrot wasn't asked to do a sum, right? (as in, "what's two and three?) Right. |

And he wasn't doing any other calculation (subtracting, dividing... have to be a real smart parrot to do that...) either, correct? Merely counting objects? *sigh* Did both questions start with "what is..?" |

If I figure out the question, will the puzzle be solved? Was the question something like: "What shape is green?" and they wanted/expected him to answer with a geometrical word, but he replied with a number? The second question was similar: "What shape is red?" And the answer should have been "circle", but the parrot was creative and replied "zero"? Please let this be it... or I'll suffer from sleepless nights over this puzzle. >_< |

VERY close and they wanted/expected him to answer with a geometrical word, YES!!! but he replied with a number? Yes! The second question was similar: "What shape is red?" Right And the answer should have been "circle", but the parrot was creative and replied "zero"? No Please let this be it... or I'll suffer from sleepless nights over this puzzle. >_< Shall I take pity on you and post the $poiler? |

No... I don't want to give up so close to the solution... *growls* Was the (first) question: "What shape is this?" "What shape is *number*?" "What shape is *geometrical word*?" Was either of the questions intended as an instruction for the parrot to count anything? DID the parrot actually count something? Am I stupid? -_-, |

No... I don't want to give up so close to the solution... *growls* Okay, okay *holds hands up and backs away slowly* Was the (first) question: "What shape is this?" "What shape is *number*?" YES!!! Both questions actually! "What shape is *geometrical word*?" Was either of the questions intended as an instruction for the parrot to count anything? DID the parrot actually count something? Am I stupid? -_-, Clearly not, as I can now post the ***************SPOILER*************** Alex, an African grey parrot, would often have an exercise in which he would count shapes. In this example, he might have two squares, three circles, and a triangle. His trainer said, "What shape two?" (as in, which shape are there two of?). Alex said, "Five" instead of 'square'. Frustrated, his trainer said, "Okay smarty, what shape five?" Alex said, "None," not only showing understanding of the concept of 'zero', but manipulating his trainer into letting him showing this off! (Wikipedia says it just shows he got bored. I got MY information from Nat Geo kids magazine, which is MUCH more reliable!) |

So sad how Alex unexpectedly died though :-( Weren't his last words something like "Be good, see you tomorrow. Love you"? From what I remember, this parrot would at times just get fed up, and in general had quite a temper. But if you were being trained all day to learn language, wouldn't you get bored at times too? |

And forgot to explain the significance of the title. This quote is from the movie "Underdog". Underdog just happens to be *gasp* a dog! Both dogs and parrots are animals. The relation to evolution was a total accident...Or was it... And my new puzzle will be posted within the next five minutes! |
