There are lots of Japanese sweet things to enjoy! Chinsuko is a shortbread-style cookie, Castella is a kind of sponge cake, and andagi are similar to doughnuts. Gelatin-style desserts are common, including a wonderful coffee-flavored jelly, which is also very good with ice cream. Sweet bean paste, which is NOT my favorite, is used in a lot of desserts, such as mochi, which is a dumpling with a sweet filling. There are many more options, but they may not be available in all markets or restaurants, so you might try finding recipes and making them yourself. It's not too hard. Is Lisetta speaking at all when this occurs? Do we need to find out more about Lisetta as a person? | ||

I don't know if this has been asked before, but I vaguely recall there's a disorder (brought on by head trauma, I think?) that causes people to completely change their accent/the way they speak. Has this happened to Lisetta? So now she speaks with a 'Japanese accent', despite not being Japanese? | ||

Alzheimers/dementia relevant? Do people assume that Lisetta is going senile? That people her age would be incapable of anything like learning Japanese? Do they ask about Lisett'a future? Imply that she should be in a home? That she is incapable of doing things for herself? That caring for her must be a burden on Merton? | ||

Does the question begin 'Is Lisetta...'? 'Does Lisetta have...'? Are they effectively asking if she has dementia, but using a euphemism? Is the relevant other person mentioned earlier part of the euphemism? Is Merton trying to criticise specifically the use of the euphemism? The assumption that an old person must have dementia? Be incapable of intellectually challenging activity? Is his response pointed only because it proves that Lisetta is perfectly capable of such activity? Or is it fitted to the question in another way? If Lisetta was a quiz champion, or a successful scientist, say, could he bring these things up in response to the question with the same effect? | ||

He replies, accurately, "She's trying to perfect her Japanese" (certainly a great intellectual challenge for a non-native speaker) in order to get across 2 points: 1. People shouldn't figure that a very old person is likely to have dementia. 2. People shouldn't use the silly euphemism "intellectually challenged" when they mean demented. And what should people do? One of my friends at my middle school regularly used the word "demented" to refer not to people, but to things he thought were badly designed, useless, etc. For example, "This automatic hand dryer is demented! You might as well lick your hand dry!" (he also used "disgruntled" a lot, not for this purpose though). I could only imagine what people would have thought if he had used "intellectually challenged" for that! |
