Was the lesson they were trying to get across that you should think for yourself ? and not be a slave to conformity? were they trying to pour scorn on something ? e.g. ridiculous dinner party etiquette, menu snobbery, you should never serve brie with beef or cheddar with fish or other such nonsense? Are we at least OTRT? At what age did this happen? Less than 7 years old? Less than 13 years old? Older than this? (Sorry, forgot if you said you had a sibling). Do you have a brother or sister? Relevant? You said that non-food products would work as well in transmitting this lesson. In this case, would two brands or types of a specific non-food product work as well? Would it need to be exactly two? If so, would offering two different pocket-knives under the right conditions, impart the lesson just as well? How about the same question for two different bars of chocolate? Two different bicycles? Two different bedtime stories read to you on different nights? If you were an adult at the time, do you think the lesson would still work? Is this a lesson that most people learn in childhood? And do most learn it by other means? |

Just to make sure I understand: Your parents presented you with two types of cheese. You thought the more expensive cheese was tastier, even before you knew how much it cost. They then used the experience to teach you a lesson that most adults already know. The lesson can save you money and make you happier. Is all of that correct? Was there another event after the taste test? Or did you just discuss the lesson to be learned? Do we have all the information we need to figure out what the lesson was? |

"What did you like about CostlyType cheese?" "Why do you think CostlyType cheese tasted better?" "What is the difference between CostlyType and CheapType cheese?" "What would you eat with CostlyType cheese?" "What would you drink with CostlyType cheese?" Anything similar to the questions above? |

Was the question intended to have you compare the cheeses in some way? Were you able to answer the question readily? Relevant? |

Was the question to do with taste? Which you liked more? Cost? Which one you thought cost more? How much you would be willing to pay for the respective cheeses? Was it anything along the lines that scrimping as much as possible will not necessarily lead to the best quality of life, and it might be better to splash out? |

I was a child in the wonderful era before widespread self-righteousness about food, so "yellow cheese" in my family meant processed cheeses like American cheese & Velveeta. which I liked very much. But one evening my father brought home some "real" cheddar. I said, "Gee, this is even better than Velveeta," & my father said, "It costs twice as much. Do you like it twice as much?" I said yes, & I was never expected to eat Velveeta again. If I had said no, I would have been expected to make do with Velveeta. This obvious lesson--splurge just on what you really like--can be adapted to every income level. Even poor people have some discretionary change. Even Bill Gates can't buy every yacht that strikes his fancy. Even a solved puzzle is not the end of the line. Please check out my replacement puzzle at the bottom of the page. |
