This is entirely from my own imagination and quite lateral I hope. How did getting a pet cat cause a man's death? |

Was it related to the manner in which the man got the cat? Did the man die before he brought the cat home? Cat as in live, actual cat (not a stuffed animal for example)? Was it a domestic house cat? Was the death caused by some sort of interaction with the cat? Or by someone else because of something the cat did? Is cat food related? Caused by trying to save the cat from danger? |

"The did something because he had a cat": About the typo, did you mean "he did.." or "They did.."? I'll assume "he" for now. You already said that it doesn't matter how he got the cat. But just to clarify: This puzzle would still work if he got the cat directly from a breeder or pet store, correct? So then, we know the cat wasn't someone else's previous pet. But did someone else think that it was their cat? Was he shot inside his house? Outside? Did the person who shot him know that he had a pet cat? Did he leave a window open so the cat could sit on the window-sill and some one broke in the house through the window? |

was he calling the cat in? No outside looking for it? Yesish but not when he was shot. The shooting happened some time after he yesishly was looking for the cat. trying to recue it from a tree? No Hint: Just to clarify the man does has started to do something since he got a new cat. This action is done to prevent the cat from coming to harm. It is like looking for the cat but not in a searching for it when it's lost sense. Doing this action results in his being shot some of time later. |

Did the shooter incorrectly assume something about the man that got killed? Yes If so, did the false assumption involve identity? Yes guilt? No intentions? Noish but don't get hung up on this Clarification and Recap: The man who got shot was deliberately murdered by the shooter i.e. he was not hit in a crossfire or by a ricochet. However he was killed as a result of mistaken identity and the reason for this was his recent acquisition of a cat and his desire to make sure the get didn't get squished by a car. That's all we've established so far |

So is it like that one episode of Murder, She Wrote where a man comes to a woman's house expecting to see another man there and he shoots him through the window, only it turns out he shot the wrong man, because he was there instead of the other one? I can't remember all the details, but basically both the intended victim and the dead man were conmen and former partners, and the intended vic was a man who was irritating all the men it town by using his charm and appeal to sell health products and stuff to women, while the other one who actually got shot had roped the woman into some sort of financial scam having to do with some land she owned, I think. She'd made an appointment for some 'treatment' from the health guy, and the shooter heard her, but she cancelled it. The shooter didn't know she'd cancelled it, so when the con man broke into her house to go through her stuff and rob her, and the shooter came to shoot the other guy, the shooter thought it was him. So was it like that? |

Was the driver (if there was a driver?) of the car in anyway related to the shooter? No Did the driver try to run over the cat? No quite the opposite. There's an element of FA here but I can't say too much without blowing the solution Had the shooter planned the murder? Yes Did the shooter make the false assumption about the man's identity because of his ownership of the cat? The man does something because of his ownership of a cat but this action is misinterpreted by the killer as being something else entirely. But it is true to say that this action gives the killer a false assumption about the victim's identity Or/and the saving of the cat? See above Did the shooter also have a false assumption about the cat's identity? You can assume that the killer knew nothing about the cat at all |

Had the shooter been hired to kill someone? No Is there a relevant object (such as a pet collar) that contributed to the mistaken identity? Yes we've already established that a car is relevent. No kitty accessories are relevent however. |

The driver and the shooter are not the same person, correct? The driver and the owner of the cat are also two different persons? Did the driver see the cat? Did he try to break to avoid hitting the cat? Was he unable to break? or was there not enough time to stop the car before the car would have hit the cat? If the owner of the cat hadn't interfered, would the cat have been hit by the car? Did the shooter see the cat? If no, would the shooter realize his mistake and not shoot if he had seen the cat? Did the owner save the cat by picking it up? get it to move (by movement or sound)? by stopping the car (physically)? by getting the car to stop (by movement or sound)? |

The driver and the shooter are not the same person, correct? Correct The driver and the owner of the cat are also two different persons? Incorrect, the driver is the cat owner and murder victim Did the driver see the cat? see below Did he try to break to avoid hitting the cat? He wasn't driving at the time he did this action but his having a car is relevant to the action Was he unable to break? See above or was there not enough time to stop the car before the car would have hit the cat? See above he was not driving at the time If the owner of the cat hadn't interfered, would the cat have been hit by the car? FA Did the shooter see the cat? No If no, would the shooter realize his mistake and not shoot if he had seen the cat? Quite possibly it would certainly have given him cause to think Did the owner save the cat by picking it up? The action the owner did and does regularly is more about preventing the risk of getting run over rather than saving the cat from actually gettting run over. Hope this isn't confusing get it to move (by movement or sound)? by stopping the car (physically)? by getting the car to stop (by movement or sound)? I can cover all of these with my hint below: This has become quite confusing it would appear so I'll help a little. The murder victim does a particular action routinely because he owns a cat and a car. His objective is to reduce the risk of the cat coming to harm. He does not however do this while driving. This action is observed by the murderer which leads him to kill the victim. Think of ways cats interact with cars and you'll be well on your way |

Ways Cats Interact With Cars: (from a very sleepy Kaylee kitteh who is running on 6 hours of sleep) -Sleeping on them -Sleeping under them -Running in front of them -Walking underneath them -Crossing the road when a car's coming and giving the car a Kitteh Look of Doom as if daring it to get in the way -Eating cheezburgur inside it, thoughtfully bought by the kitteh's person...even if not for the kitteh (what do you mean, OF COURSE it's for the kitteh...right?) |

Ways Cats Interact With Cars: (from a very sleepy Kaylee kitteh who is running on 6 hours of sleep) 6 hours would be a blessing for me. I must tell you all about my insomnia some time -Sleeping on them -Sleeping under them Yes . Now then.... -Running in front of them -Walking underneath them -Crossing the road when a car's coming and giving the car a Kitteh Look of Doom as if daring it to get in the way -Eating cheezburgur inside it, thoughtfully bought by the kitteh's person...even if not for the kitteh (what do you mean, OF COURSE it's for the kitteh...right?) but of course |

Hmm... I'm still not sure about the missing piece. Had the shooter seen the man look under the car many times before? Did the shooter feel threatened by the cat owner? Was he angry with him? Had someone blown up the shooter's car? Did the shooter believe the cat owner was a criminal/bad person? |

Hmm... I'm still not sure about the missing piece. Sorry i guess given that I know the solution the leap required is a samll one so I thought you had it Had the shooter seen the man look under the car many times before? He could have seen him only once but lets say he saw this happen a couple of times Did the shooter feel threatened by the cat owner? No Was he angry with him? Not the way I'd describe it so I'll say yope to this. You need to establish the motive for the killers intended victim Had someone blown up the shooter's car? No Did the shooter believe the cat owner was a criminal/bad person? Not a criminal no but a bad person I'll say yesish. Concentrate on the nature of the crime that was actually intended. The method used is a clue |

Was the shooter afraid of the cat owner? Did he think the cat owner was mentally ill? Did he expect that there would have been a good reason for the cat owner to check for a car bomb? profession relevant? |

So the shooter was trying to assassinate someone important. Did that someone suspect that an attempt would be made on their life? If so then the shooter might suspect that person to check under their car for a bomb as a precaution, and so when Our Hero looked under his car for his cat, the shooter thought he was the important person and killed him. That good? |

So the shooter was trying to assassinate someone important. Did that someone suspect that an attempt would be made on their life? They knew they might be a target given their profession If so then the shooter might suspect that person to check under their car for a bomb as a precaution, and so when Our Hero looked under his car for his cat, the shooter thought he was the important person and killed him. That good? Pretty good yes I'm thinking along those lines too, Balin... Do we need to figure out more details? No not really see below...... This was a good one, I think. Thanks and we can move on to the.... ************Spoiler*************** In my mind this puzzle was set during the Northern Ireland troubles when car bombs were a common method of assassination. The murderer (Jim) who's a member of a terrorist organisation is sent by his superiors to assassinate a high ranking member of the security forces (or a judge or politician). However they have limited intelligence on their target save for the address of the little cul-de-sac on which he lives and a brief discription (6 ft, 200 lbs dark hair etc.). There are only 6 houses on the little avenue and the target lives in one of them. The victim (Pat) also lives in the cul-de-sac. He has recently acquired a new pet cat which sleeps indoors but is let outside first thing every morning. Pat has noticed that the little rascal has a habit as a lot of cats do of hiding underneath his car. Not wanting to crush the cat when he reverses out of the drive he has taken to looking under his car before leaving for work to make sure she isn't there. Unfortunately Jim who is casing the area posing as a jogger or deliveryman or something similar spots Pat looking under his car. Pat is 6ft tall weighs about 200 lbs and has dark hair so broadly matches the discription Jim has been given. In Northern Ireland at the time all security force personel were instructed to always check under their vechicle for bombs which saved many lives but unfortunately had the downside of advertising yourself as a potential target to any terrorist sympathiser who might see you doing so. Consequently Jim immediately forms the opinion that Pat is his target and the next day shoots him dead as he leaves his house. Pat of course is just an ordinary civilian with no reason to look out for car bombs who dies as a result of mistaken identity. Unfortunately such mistakes were all too common during the bad days of the 1970s and 80s. Thank goodness those days are over. I got the idea for this puzzle from the fact that I now have to check under my car because our new cat likes to hide there. Thanks to all who played especially Balin & Emma for finishing this off. Hope you enjoyed it. P.S. Did anyone notice the cat hiding in the puzzle title? |
