Did all the other people know that Julie wasn't sad about Meredith's death? Just some of them? Did the people who knew Julie wasn't sad know why she wasn't sad? Did they assume she wasn't sad because they knew what Meredith had been doing/saying? Had they in some way colluded in it? Tried to stop it? Had they believed that Julie was to blame for whatever Meredith yesishly blamed her for? Had they punished Julie in some way? Did they isolate her because they disapproved of the fact that she wasn't sad? Because they felt guilty? | ||

Meredith was successful & got a teaching job at the same school (Stanford). Julie was unable to get a teaching job & ended up working in a bakery (which gave me a change to describe delicious things!) Julie resented Meredith for being successful & for saying stupid things to Julie, like that Julie was too concerned with success. When Meredith drowned in a canoeing accident, Julie was UNEQUIVOCALLY THRILLED. But she couldn't tell anyone, which made her lonely. By the way, there are two sequels to the story. Julie meets another unsuccessful academic who is just as bitter & resentful as she is. She tells him she's thrilled about Meredith, he thinks that's altogether fitting & proper & this well-matched couple marries & lives happily ever after, at least with respect to their marriage.
