Is he writing them for his class to critique and improve as an excercise? So he has to make them bad so they can be improved? Is it relevant what subject he teaches? Science? English? Journalism? Math? Are they supposed to be magazine articles for class purposes? Is he showing them to his student? |

Worse articles in the sense of: factual errors? Grammatical or spelling errors? Does he want the articles to be rejected? The type of journals he writes for: Psychology/Sociology? Physics? Mathematics? Earth Sciences? Neurology? Psychiatry? Does he submit his articles under a pseudonym? Does he hope to fool the journal into accepting bad articles? Is the kind of bloopers he puts in the text relevant? Are they obvious? Wrong conclusions? Missing references? Missing data to support his conclusions? Wrong quotations? Nonsense or contradictory definitions? Weaker results than he actually got? Does he want to test the editor? Does he deliberately misquote other articles? in order to provoke reactions of the authors of those articles? Does he basically want to know how many people read his paper? Does it have anything to do with the peer review process? Does he write poorly to... increase the number of peers he needs to review his article? Are there certain people that he can only interact with for professional reasons? Would this increase the amount of reviewing required by 1 particular person? Somebody he would like to be romantically involved with? But is too shy to talk to that person for anything other than work? |

When he publishes an article with errors, does he then later publish another article on the same subject? Does he want to make it look like he is progressing in his field, because he starts writing better articles? Does he want people to know that he can recognise when he makes a mistake? Does he write them subscribing to a point of view he believes in? Or an alternative one? Is Professor Blooper citing other research & articles even though he knows they're unfounded or bad science? But because he's citing another source it doesn't make him look bad? Does Professor Blooper already have tenure? And thus isn't as status-conscious as others? Does he deliberately write poor articles in order to maintain his status, but to avoid getting sniped/lampooned by his colleagues? I'm an engineer. I teach robots how to build an assortment of commercial airplanes. He's from Texas. He was a contractor overseas working IT/Sys Admin in the server rooms. Is it perhaps more important for Professor Blooper to get his articles out FASTER rather than spend extra time making them better? Is that so that he can saturate the market with his articles and his name, thus freezing out any competing articles? After all, what magazine would publish 2 articles essentially about the same thing. |

Is Professor Blooper a member of the LTPF and makes deliberate typos in his articles as a form of secret message to the community - puzzles to be solved? Is his popularity partially driven by these "errors" & fun puzzles incorporated into serious articles? Are the bloopers more like challenge words that he's trying to fit into the article just to win a bet? Like somebody betting the graduation day speaker they wouldn't be able to get the words "paper plate, dildo, & elephant" into their speech without anybody noticing. |

Is the Professor trying to draw attention to his particular field of research? Is he trying to encourage more people to enter that field? To conduct more experiments so he'll have more substantial evidence or research to write about? Is he trying to drum up more graduate students and assistants who will "correct" or "test" the bad assumptions or declarations he made in his articles? Thus helping him write even better articles, and become more famous? |

Anything in this article relevant? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Academic_publishing Type of paper? Editing process relevant? Serials Crisis relevant? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serials_crisis Do Professor Blooper's articles get published strictly in magazines/journals? Or are they also published widely online? At least at the magazine's website? If strictly dead tree editions... Is he being forced to cut his articles down, make poor generalizations rather than go into accurate specifics, so that he can even get published? Because there isn't enough room in the journals anymore? Because they're being forced to make budget cuts? Because the library's won't buy the expensive journals anymore? |

does he put the bloopers in in order to get others to comment in articles of their own upon his papers? and giving his papers as references? does this then increase the number of citations his papers have? and therefore make it look as though he is important academically because so many other people are citing his papers? |

********** SPOILER ************ Clever Hannah triumphs yet again!! One of the many irrationalities of academia is that tenure & promotion committees rely heavily on a candidate's "citation index," i.e. how many times other scholars cite his work. So Professor Blooper works the system by making bloopers, which other scholars can correct. This works best for invited papers, of course, rather than for refereed papers, where bloopers can lead to rejection. Please lead yourself to my new puzzle at the bottom of the page. |
