That's the best I could do under the circumstances.

This is based on something a friend of mine posted on Facebook. If you think you know the answer, don't say anything. If you don't know the answer, don't google it.

"I" = you, Hominid? H? A? M?

Is this based on a joke? (The line sounds familiar, but I cannot place the source.)

Is this based on a joke? yes. (The line sounds familiar, but I cannot place the source.) If you get close to the answer, email it.

Did it say "send this to 10 of your facebook friends" but you had less than 10? The puzzle itself has absolutely nothing to do with facebook. I simply read about it on facebook.

Was the puzzle statement part of the thing that was posted on Facebook? Or did the Facebook post refer to something else which the puzzle statement was part of? Or was the statement a comment on the thing referred to?

A joke: a textual/narrative joke? Or involving pictures? Video? Sound? Music? A practical joke? Is the puzzle statement the punchline of the joke? Any puns involved?

Or was the statement a comment on the thing referred to? Forget that I ever mentioned Facebook. Facebook is completely irrelevant to the puzzle.

Ignore the italicized text and work on the actual puzzle statement.

I take it the answers to my last two questions (punchline and puns) are "no", since they weren't answered?

is the person an employee answering to his boss? yope/noish.

I take it the answers to my last two questions (punchline and puns) are "no", since they weren't answered? Sorry I missed those, but you are correct; the answer is no to both.

Is the puzzle statement something one person says to another? yope. Are there more than two persons involved in the situation? two individuals and a few others. Are they both/all H/A/M? You can assume so. The H is relevant to everyone; the A to all except the speaker, although he's probably an adult. The gender is irrelevant.

is the situation based in an office environment? no.

does the person do this thing every year? no, but OTRT. on a specific date? no, but OTRT. or does the thing take all year? no. is success measured in years? if you mean the likes of "it went better this year than last year," then yes. like a school report or a work appraisal? neither of these, though.

or is it something that's usualy done once a year? like spring-cleaning? celebrating something? annual vacation? the relevant action is something that most people do not do, but people do it regardless of the time of year. However, the end result is something that is supposed to happen once a year.

I would recommend giving names to the two main characters so it's less confusing.

If we call Person 1 Matt and Person 2 Greg, could you please recap so things become clearer?

********************RECAP**********************

Matt communicates to Greg, "It's the best I could do under the circumstances." Matt does something for Greg every year. For some reason, he was not able to do that thing this year, but because of something Matt did or said, the desired outcome was accomplished. One other group of people is involved. They are human and adult. Their gender is irrelevant.

Welcome back Liquizt! You created the first Latventure I solved on here, and probably one of the first Latventures on the forum at all. A few months ago I was actually trying to remember your name, because I realized that the author of that puzzle had disappeared.

Anyway, is a seed placed in the soil? A plant that is already partly grown (i.e. a seedling or small plant)? Or is a plant moved from one sort of pot or container to another?

Does this involve a plant that bears fruit? That is otherwise edible (e.g. a potato)? that provides building materials? That is used medically? that is purely for aesthetics?

Anyway, is a seed placed in the soil? probably this, eventually.

The plant is a tomato, but this is not really relevant.

To check my understanding:

Here is Greg, who used to dig the soil to plant tomatoes, but can no longer do so alone because he is getting on in years.

And here is Matt, who used to help Greg dig the soil but on this occasion cannot do so because he is "away".

Nonetheless, Matt somehow induces some other "group of people" to dig the soil so that Greg can plant his tomatoes.

If any of the above is flawed, please indicate. Otherwise, or anyway, I have a couple of questions:

Are Matt and Greg related? Do they live in the same house (for svv of "house")?

By the way, hello (again) to lateral puzzlers old and new. Good to see this place still flourishing. It's been a while since I used the term "svv".

One imagines Matt pent in durance vile for crimes that he may or may not have committed. Unable to help Greg dig the soil this year due to being in clink, he gives the constabulary to understand that Greg's garden contains the bodies of several people whom Matt may or may not have murdered. The rozzers delve with might and (according to certain obstinate historians) main in Greg's garden. To no avail, for there are not really any cadavers on the premises - but Greg can now plant his tomatoes.

One is reminded of some rather weightier poetry than usual:

That corpse you planted last year in your garden -
Has it begun to sprout? Will it bloom this year?
Or has the sudden frost disturbed its bed?
O, keep the Dog far hence that's friend to men,
Or with his nails he'll dig it up again."
