So I just came back to the LPTF after a long absence. How fun. But I forgot the answers to my three puzzles in limbo, it's been so long. So I'll just make a new one. Why did the fans at the soccer game boo their own national anthem? |

It's nice to see you back! Did one nation play against another nation? Is the [LTPF list of countries] allowed here? or would that give too much info away? Did the fans boo the national anthem while their team was singing it? Shot in the dark: Did the two competing nations have the same national anthem, so the fans booed it when the other team sung it? |

too bad - I was really curious about Not So Great Nate. But welcome back, anyway! Was the booing before the game? during it? after? |

It's nice to see you back! Did one nation play against another nation? Yes Is the [LTPF list of countries] allowed here? or would that give too much info away? It would give too much information away. But if you come up with a theory involving a specific nation, that's fine. Did the fans boo the national anthem while their team was singing it? No and possible FA Shot in the dark: Did the two competing nations have the same national anthem, so the fans booed it when the other team sung it? Yesish - you're close. Was the booing before the game? this during it? after? |

During the booing, was the anthem played with instruments? sung? both? Relevant? During the booing, was the anthem played/sung to represent the other team? of the team whose fans booed? |

Did the one who was responsible for playing the recordings mix them up? No - see questions above, you're OTWT now. Your question above was very close to the answer, but not exactly the answer. |

Did the anthems have the same melody, but not the same lyrics? |

Did the anthems have the same melody, but not the same lyrics? this ****SPOILER **** When Northern Ireland hosted Liechtenstein in a Euro 96 qualifier, and again when England hosted Liechtenstein in a Euro 2004 qualifier, they played first the national anthem "Oben am jungen Rhein" (Under the Young Rhine), which has the same tune as "God Save the Queen" and is Liechtenstein's anthem, and then "God Save the Queen", which both England and Northern Ireland use as their anthem in FIFA matches. (It is my understanding that for rugby and many other sports, Northern Ireland and Ireland field one team and use the tune "Ireland's Call" rather than use "God Save the Queen" or "Amhrán na bhFiann". But that's not the case for soccer/football) Anyway, the North Irish (and eight years later, English) fans booed the Liechtenstein anthem, even though it is their own anthem too, since in that case it was the Liechtenstein anthem. I couldn't find either of those on YouTube, but Scottish fans (who use "Flower of Scotland" as their anthem) booed Liechtenstein's anthem/God Save the Queen at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ESsqwTPfSuo |

Ah, nice puzzle. I didn't know that England/Northern Ireland and Liechtenstein had the same national anthem, and I didn't even know Liechtenstein had a national football (soccer) team. |

Every able-bodied man in the principality must have been on the team. No wonder they had to use a recording to play the national anthem! Sorry - I shouldn't be so slighting about pocket-handkerchief-sized european countries. But not sorry enough not to go for the cheap joke. Good puzzle! |

They used a recording for both anthems, as they normally do at international soccer/football matches. That's not unusual. And for what it's worth, when England plays Northern Ireland, they only play the anthem once, since it's the same anthem. Likewise when Greece plays Cyprus, since the two of them share the same anthem. |
