Was it a rhetorical question?

Something mundane like: "Where is the washroom?"

He asked something that clearly showed that he didn't yet know some obvious thing that all students with this major should know?

He asked something that clearly showed that he didn't know something that he definitely should have known, given the situation?

Is there a single idea that is relevant, that he didn't know? If so, would every student, generally, be expected to know it? Would someone learn this in a classroom?

Relevant why he didn't know it? Would it help us to find that out?

Did he ask what your name is? (Pretty unlikely, but it would be rather funny.)

Does it have to do with whether or not the student truly did "really, really" want to take the course? Vs. it being a required course and the most convenient time for them to take it?

Anything about how many people might be dropping the class?

Was the question something about people getting what they want (e. g. "Shouldn't people get what they really, really want")? About trying to make people happy (e. g. "Shouldn't you always try to make people happy by fulfilling all their wants")?
