According to dictionary.com, fraud is "A deception deliberately practiced in order to secure unfair or unlawful gain."
Depending on how you define "gain", this could be considered fraud, I suppose. |

HINT: Anthony wasn't "on the outside". His profession is relevant. |

And Anthony, not Cassius, is in the coffin in which Julius hides?
But Julius thinks he's in the coffin with Cassius?
Does Julius see Anthony by using a flashlight (since they're in a coffin)?
Was Anthony also a prisoner?
Did Anthony work at the prison?
Was the noise that prevented Brutus from hearing Julius' screams caused by the dirt being shoveled into the grave?
Was Anthony a mortician?
If so, did Julius arrange for Anthony to free him after the coffin was delivered to the mortuary? |

He came. He saw. He freaked out. He died.
Julius is an inmate in a prison. He would like to escape. He has found a way to break out of his cell, but he is unable to escape the prison grounds on his own.
Anthony is a mortician for the prison. The prison has a graveyard nearby, outside the prison grounds. When an inmate dies, it is Anthony's responsibility to bury him. The body is brought to his work room in the prison, and he takes the coffin out to bury it the next day. He has an assistant, Brutus, who helps him in this task often.
Julius manages to convince Anthony to help him escape. The plan is for Julius to sneak into the casket of a dead inmate the night before he is to be buried. Then, when Anthony takes the casket outside the prison grounds the next day, he will open the casket and let Julius go free before he buries it.
They discuss the probability of Brutus being there to help, and Anthony assures Julius that he will find some reason to send Brutus back into the prison, if only for a few minutes, so that he will have no knowledge of Julius's escape.
So, when one of the other inmates (Cassius) dies, Julius talks to Anthony, and they plan the escape the next day. Julius returns to his cell.
That night, Julius quietly escapes from his cell, sneaks into Anthony's work room by cover of darkness, and gets into a casket. He sees the body in the casket, but it's too dark to see anything else.
The next morning, the casket is taken out to the graveyard. As the casket is lowered into the ground, Julius wonders what is going on. Unable to see anything, he reasons that Anthony is going through the motions, still needing to get Brutus to leave.
As he hears dirt being poured over the coffin, Julius is suddenly very panicked and scared. He screams, but can't be heard through the noise and volume of dirt being poured over him, and the fact that his screams are muffled by the coffin.
He suddenly remembers that he has a matchbook in his pocket (for his cigarettes), and in the tight confines of the coffin, he manages to light one. He is shocked and horrified to see, not Cassius, but Anthony!
(Anthony died the previous day of a massive heart attack, some time after talking to Julius.)
Brutus assumed all of Anthony's responsibilities-- his first being to bury Anthony, (and Cassius as well). Brutus took both coffins outside the prison grounds together, unaware that Julius was in one of them.
By now, it's too late-- Julius is buried alive. He eventually dies of suffocation. |

Good job Alizon, Arjun, Simon, and Oneida for the final piece of the puzzle.
I heard this as a LP originally, which I've remembered for a long time, which was why I thought it might be a classic. It's probably one of my all time favorites. (I wish I could remember when and where I heard it). When I heard it, the opening was something like "He struck a match, and what he saw literally scared him to death." I took a few details out of that opening, and reworded it to make it more interesting. |
