Is the idea that he bought this Thing to stop anyone else buying it? No, this was not his reason for the purchase
I am a bit lost - is it actually a living Thing, an animal? Yes
If so...a bird? Yes

Look up, for example, "pining for the fjords" and "beautiful plumage" :) Beyond that, I leave you to the mercy of whatever merciful powers there be :)

I'm not sure where we are :( Suppose he had wanted to buy a goose. Could he have gone to the first goose-seller he came across, and said "Sell me a goose"? Or was he intent on buying that goose, and no other goose would do?

A thought - this isn't "The Blue Carbuncle", is it?

...Aflac!!

So that particular bird had some relevant feature? Ability? Quality? Which Al felt he needed in a bird?

Previously he'd had access to bunches o' birds--is it relevant how? If so, did he work on/own a poultry farm? Work on/own a pet store? A zoo? A reserve/sanctuary? A bird-rescue outfit? Mission San Juan Capistrano:O?

A parrot? No

So that particular bird had some relevant feature? Not really, keep reading...
Ability? Yes
Quality? Somewhat

Previously he'd had access to bunches o' birds--is it relevant how? Not really, there is another more relevant issue about the 'bunches'
If so, did he work on/own a poultry farm? No
Work on/own a pet store? No
A zoo? No
A reserve/sanctuary? No
A bird-rescue outfit? No
Mission San Juan Capistrano? No

Did I smell Monty Python somewhere?
Is it relevant that a 'bunch' of crows is a murder of crows?

Did he need more crows? Ahhh, do any of us need more crows?

Never a good crow when you need one...

Crows, crows everywhere and not a...

I digress - if you are asking if he needed more than the one he bought, then no. If you are asking something else then I'm not sure how to answer.

I expect I need more crows but no I was barking up the wrong tree.
I had in mind four and twenty black birds.

So, what was he needing with a crow..

Was he intending to combine it with something else?
Or was it to be used in isolation for something?

Was it for decoration?
Food?
Breeding?
A certain effect?
