Although the company had no desire to give me a "free gift" (as opposed to a gift I had to pay for??), I got them to send me a pair of earrings I had no intention of paying for. (Of course, I am terrrribly upright & so did nothing dishonest.) How come??

If you start picking on repetetive redundancies you will be completely surrounded on all sides (with no safe haven nearby) by the members of the Stamp Out, Eradicate and Abolish All Reiterating Redundancies Organization Group (SOEAARROG, commonly referred to as AARRG--that's the short abbreviated version style).

U. S. laws about unsolicited packages relevant?

Time shares involved?

Do Not Call list relevant?

Did the earrings come packaged with anything else?

Did you give the company money for a DIFFERENT good or service?

Did you intend to keep the earrings?

Were the earrings meant for you?

Actually, it was the custom of certain Native American tribes that any gift given had to be reciprocated with a gift to the original giver. So, in a way, they gave "gifts" you had to "pay" for. Perhaps the redundant term came from that. Just another tidbit from the fun fact/useless trivia file.

Anything special about the earrings?

Were the free earrings advertised as a "free gift"? Were there conditions you had to meet to get them? For example, if you buy four pairs the fifth is free?

Had you purchased something from them? If so, did you keep what you bought (i. e. not send it back to them)?

Did you purchase the earrings, and only the earrings from the company?
Did you receive the earrings by mail or other parcel delivery service?
If so, was the package addressed to you? Someone else?
As far as the company knows, were you the correct person to receive these earrings?

the sequence of events..

you ordered some earrings from the company? you ordered something other than earrings from the company? they sent you the earrings? they sent you something else? the earrings they sent were not exactly as you were expecting? the first pair of earrings were unsuitable in some way? so you contacted the company again? and they sent you another pair of earrings? which this time were suitable?

or did you tell the company that you were pleased with the earrings? and they gave you another pair as a 'thank you'?

is it relevant whether the earrings were for pierced ears or not?

so there were two sets of earrings? first pair and second pair? if so, were they similar? identical?

Hi Buzzard! Are you enjoying your post-doc at Bristol??

Very much, thank you. :) But I still miss Chicago, which is the greatest city in the world. :(

Did you want a pair of identical earrings? Did the first pair of earrings consist of two identical earrings? Did the second pair?

Ultimately, did you end up wearing one earring from the first pair with one from the second pair?

Wait a minute... are there more than three pairs of earrings involved?

Did they, at any point,
deliver the wrong type of earrings?
deliver the wrong number of earrings?
deliver earrings to the wrong address?

Surely they didn't mistakenly deliver two pairs of earrings instead of one, and then send a third to make up for this mistake?

Right? yes

**** SPOILER ***************
One day I ordered two (different) sets of earrings to be sent to me & a set identical to one of mine to be sent to a friend as a birthday present. The company screwed up & sent the extra pair to my friend. When I complained, they said I should ask my friend to sent them to me & they would pay mailing costs. I said no way was I going to tell my friend that she had actually received a more substantial present that I had intednded & should send part of it back. I told the company that they should instead send me a pair of the second sort, free, & they did. Sorry it was so easy & please check out my harder one at the bottom of the page.
