Is bribery relevant? theft? No, nothing as dramatic as that...

Hmm...

Is another function of the mobile besides the phoning relevant? No, just this

Is this correct?

Or at least only a function very much related to phoning is also relevant...

A small...

********** RECAP **********

Puzzle Title: WIIBROE
Puzzle Statement: Just call home to get free beer.

I am myself "involved" in this puzzle, it's from real life. It happened just after viscontis free beer puzzle was here on LTPF. The statement is a thought/reflection/afterthought, and occurrs (mostly) after the free beer is had.

The "home key" isn't relevant.
"Call" refers to calling using a phone.
A mobile phone was used to make the call, and that is relevant.

Free beer IS involved. Who pays (paid) for it is relevant. The brand is Wiibroe... I got the beer. How it was delivered is somewhat relevant, it was delivered "by hand".

Nothing criminal, dangerous or otherwise unpleasant is involved. No one is arrested, no prison is relevant. The Government is NOT involved (so no bribery).

Neither the number 9442763 nor 4663 (corresponding to WIIBROE and HOME) are relevant. "Home" is not an acronym, it's referring to a real home.

Only the use of the mobile for calling is relevant, with the associated functions for phoning included.

John Morahan has emailed me the correct answer in March, I just thought someone else could get a few more stabs at it before it gets $poiled...

Home was your home? Someone else's? The one who made the call?

So lets get this straight in my mind!
You call up a number on your mobile?
It is not exactly Freddie's (the someone else) home number? But something similar to that? Home cum office number? Does Freddie's place of work have "home" as part of their name?
Did you speak to Freddie on the line? To an answering machine? To some Voice interactive software? Was the call answered at all?
And the outcome of this call was free beer being delivered to you by Freddie? How far was Freddie from you when you made the call? (range of distance from 1 feet to 10,000 miles) How much time lag between the call and the free beer coming? (1 sec to 10,000 days)
Did you pay Freddie (or his employers) for some other service rendered to you? Did they render some other service to you at all? Did Freddie deliver only the beer or something else also?

It is relevant that it is a mobile.. because you had to use it while moving or in an akward place? ring tones relevant? handy displays? doppler effect? radio towers or cells? vibration alert? SMS?

Did your mobile establish a connection to the someone else's home phone? or vice versa? Is a bet involved? Did the 'call' make him give you the beer (e.g. by winning a bet)? Did it enable him to (e.g. by saying where you are)?

Is the relevance of the mobile simply that you weren't near a ordinary phone? Did your mobile have to be turned on for this to work? Did you type in a number? did you press the dial button? did you wait for him to answer the phone? or did you hang up before then, just letting it ring a number of times?

Is the relevance of the mobile simply that you weren't near a ordinary phone? No, there's much more relevance to it. Did your mobile have to be turned on for this to work? No, and FA. Did you type in a number? No did you press the dial button? Yes did you wait for him to answer the phone? Yes or did you hang up before then, just letting it ring a number of times? No, that would have been silly...

You didnt press the digits of the number?
SO you had it stored in your mobile in some manner?
As a directory entry?
As a received call?
As a missed call?
As a call made previously?
As a SMS? Was this part of some offer received by SMS? Like call this number for free beer? Or the 100th call to this number will be rewarded by free beer?
So you chose the number from some other source other than actually dialling it and pressed the dial button to call Freddie?
The phone rang where Freddie was?
He picked it up?
When you pressed the dial button, were you certain it would be answered?
Did you know Freddie would pick it up?
Did you know the result of the call would be some free beer?
Was free beer the only reason you made the call?
Or was it just a pleasant side effect?
Did Freddie give you some message of any kind?
Did Freddie or you talk to each other again after you made the call to his "home" and before he came and delivered the beer?
When Freddie picked up the phone did he know who would be calling?
Did he know he would have to take free beer to the caller?
Was beer mentioned at all during the call?
Was there any verbal dialogue in the call? From your side? From his side?
Were any buttons of the mobile pressed after the call was connected (except to disconnect it)
Was the call disconnected before the beer came?
Relevant what kind of mobile it was?
Any other calls from or to that mobile relevant? If so, from? or to? Before the call? Or after?

You dialled the number he had stored as home?
He was thankful for you finding it?
And so the free beer?

****************************** SPOILER ******************************

This is now solved by both John Morahan and Hotbod, so it's of course now only to "wrap it up":

While my wife and I were returning home from walking the dog, we found a mobile lying beside the road. There's a notice board just beside, so I put a note up.

The cell phone had looked turned off, but I took a second and closer look at it and it was actually on. After some afterthought I looked through the address book and among a lot of names found "Home" (though in Swedish).

I selected Home and pressed the dial button and someone answered at the other end. I told him I was calling from his mobile we just had found, and he replied he just had started looking for it since he hadn't noticed he dropped it.

He asked about our address, and since he didn't live that far away his car soon stopped outside and he rang at our door. He said "I hope you drink this?" and handed over a six-pack of Wiibroe beer, and I acknowledged it was a good way of thanking for the help. And he didn't charge us for using his phone.

During the course of this puzzle we found another cell phone, this time a little more problematic... There was nothing resembling "Home" (even in Polish, this was a Polish phone) and it was a phone with a Cash card without any credit. And the battery was running out (and it wasn't compatible with our mobiles), so we couldn't just wait for the owner to try to find it by calling that number.

We found the "Last called number" and phoned that from our home phone, explained that we had found a cell phone that had been used to call this number two hours before. We got the home number of the owner, called them and they were soon on their way to collect the phone.

Since it this time was my wife who made the call, the reward was not beer but some nice flowers...

Thanks for solving the puzzle!
