They were grievously in error.

Were they attempting to create some sound effect?

did something need fed?

does this involve electricty?

they:
anything more relevant then perhaps just a group of adults?
kids?
scientist?
humans?

the fact that they didn't have what would originally been used relevant here? were "they" trapped somewhere? an island?

What property of celery made them think it might work-- that it's green? long? thin? crisp? a vegetable? a plant? food? concave?
it's shape? size? texture?
Did they use an entire celery cluster? 1 stalk? Did they slice it? relevant?
Did they try to bend it? break it?

Some wild guesses--
Did they slice it into thin slices and try to use the slices as tiddlywinks? poker chips? guitar picks?
Did they slice it into longer sticks and try to use them as tinker toys? toothpicks? clothespins?

Were they using it as a chute? To bring liquid from one place to another? To roll things down? To put peanut butter in? :)

Are there any other types of food besides celery involved?
Were they trying to accomplish a task? Prove something? Disprove something?
Were 'they' working with animals? Other people? Machines?
Did they use celery because it is...
'u' shaped (when viewed from the side)?
green?
rigid?

Does it matter how long the piece of celery was that they used? Was it just an average-length stalk?

Was the stalk used to: hold something? help move something? cover something? assist with another task?

Did the celery not work because it was not long enough? Because it was not sturdy enough?

Did they want to use it indoors? Outdoors?

Was the celery going to be used to assist with any kind of medical application?
Was the celery not sturdy enough to bear weight? or moreso pressure? both?
Could they have used any of the following if it had been available:
a tongue depressor?
a toothpick?
a pencil?
a pen?
a ruler?

Did the piece of celery need to work in conjunction with anything else? need to be tied to another object? glued to another object? somehow secured to another object?

Are roosters relevant? Chickens? Hens? Farms? Farmers? Eggs?
Is the time of day relevant? Number of people who used the celery relevant? Ages relevant?

Assuming the celery did actually work, would it have allowed the people to accomplish a task? Or moreso just keep something working or in place?

Prior to the attempt at using celery, had something broken or become damaged?

Was the celery used as an attempt to repair something? or make something new?

You said that it's not medical...I was thinking that if you were desperate you could try using celery as a finger splint, but it wouldn't provide the needed support. Is the actual application in which the celery was tried anything similar to this?
