did he know/expect he'd become richer as a result of the junkyard trip? was that his purpose in going there? did he discover something there? had he previously become rich in the same or similar way?
is one of those "Junkyard Wars" type game shows involved?

was he expecting to find that item there? did he go to the junkyard in search of it?
did he learn something from the item's condition? physical characteristics? location? just the fact that the item was present there? would it be relatively common or unusual to find such an item in a junkyard? would someone else finding it have also become richer as a result?

Ooo-kay then.

Did he notice that there were many of these things (that he then improved?) in the junkyard? that they were all broken in the same way? that they weren't broken but had still been discarded?

Did he notice something that wasn't broken but that gave him an idea for improving something else?

Were there many of these things in the junkyard?

Was the item in dilapidated condition? Did his invention make something more resistant to damage/decay?

Was the invention he designed physically similar to the item? almost identical? were they used for the same/similar purpose? did the invention incorporate some principle of the original object used for a novel purpose?

Ooo-kay then. Yep.

Did he notice that there were many of these things (that he then improved?) in the junkyard? Yesish with an almost FA. that they were all broken in the same way? No and FA.that they weren't broken but had still been discarded? YES.

Did he notice something that wasn't broken but that gave him an idea for improving something else? Yes, something else being his profit.

Were there many of these things in the junkyard? Probably quite a few.

Was the item in dilapidated condition? Sort of.Did his invention make something more resistant to damage/decay? No. Not an invention exactly.

Was the invention he designed physically similar to the item? Yes. almost identical? Yes.were they used for the same/similar purpose? Same purpose. did the invention incorporate some principle of the original object used for a novel purpose? No.

Not an invention exactly. Hmmm. Did he make the same thing that he saw, but out of a different material?

Was the FA that the things he saw in the junkyard were broken?

What he improved was his profit: did he realize that people were throwing these things away before they broke anyway, so he could make them less durable? cheaper?

*************SPOILER
This is a probably-untrue story about a real person, Henry Ford. He visited a junkyard one day and saw the remains of broken-down Model-T's. However, when he tried the cranks, batteries, etc., many parts still worked. So being the ingenious capitalist he was, he realized he could make parts cheaper with the same level of customer satisfaction.

Good job Rabrab and dryman and everybody!

This was a very good puzzle idea.

I think that Ford Motor Co. is still doing this today, which is why all the Fords I have driven have spent more time in the repair shop than on the road!
