Was a bet involved? a contest? an experiment? Is Archimedes relevant? water displacement? the word 'Eureka' relevant? |

What the sender had done was cook the steak? Would I want to eat this steak (even if I did eat meat)? Had something happened to the steak in the second picture that would make the third picture seem impossible? |

Are the three pictures of one steak: frozen; thawed; cooked? or fresh-from-the-butcher raw; prepared for cooking; cooked? Was what the sender of the e-mail had done a cooking method? a serving technique? a marinade? Were both men chefs? cooks? restaurant managers? meat salesmen? inventors? |

By Sam Greene (Pandora) on Tuesday, March 15, 2005 - 08:05 pm: Was a bet involved? no a contest? sort of an experiment? yes Is Archimedes relevant? no water displacement? no the word 'Eureka' relevant? only in the sense that it connotates achieving or discovering something By Eliot (Eliot) on Tuesday, March 15, 2005 - 08:19 pm: What the sender had done was cook the steak? he cooked it, yes Would I want to eat this steak (even if I did eat meat)? it wouldn't hurt you to eat it, and nothing inherently disgusting about it (unless you happened to find meat disgusting anyway) Had something happened to the steak in the second picture that would make the third picture seem impossible? yes... |

Were they experimenting with cooking methods? chemicals? Is it relevant how the email sender cooked the steak? did he use traditional methods? or a slightly more obscure method? |

Was what the sender of the e-mail had done a cooking method? a serving technique? a marinade? no to these Were both men chefs? cooks? restaurant managers? meat salesmen?no to these inventors? YES |

Was the experiment attempting to make the steak edible? To cook the steak? To cook it in a different manner? To make the steak somehow better? |

Did he invent a type of steak? a machine? something electrical? something which uses light? heat? Is this invention something that is in everyday use? something made up for the purpose of this puzzle? Did they invent a liquid? a gas? Did the steak at any point go from being cooked, back to raw? |

Is time/era relevant? Could this happen now? Obviously it has to have happened since the advent of e-mail...does it matter when this is taking place? What matters the most about the steak: how much time it took to go from raw to cooked? how it looks when cooked? when raw? something done to it prior to cooking? during cooking? after cooking? how it tastes after it is cooked? Did the steak look different, when cooked, to the dead guy than it would have looked if you or I looked at it and assumed it was merely a cooked steak? |

So they were both inventors? trying to devise a way of turning cooked food into raw food? the email sender invented a machine which enabled this to happen. He had a steak, took a picture of it, cooked it then took a picture of the cooked steak? used his machine and it turned back into it's original state. he took a picture of this then sent these in an email to this man who then killed himself? Do we need to establish why this man killed himself rather than just admitting defeat? Do we need to establish why the cooked steak needed to be raw once again? |

Did the pictures show a clock, or any other device which would indicate a time of day or time lapse, therby proving the steak had in fact went from raw to cooked back to raw in a chronological order? |

Do we need to establish why the cooked steak needed to be raw once again? you've hit the nail on the head ************SPOILER********************** The man is an inventor who has spent his life trying to build a device that “un-cooks” food. The E-mail is from his hated rival, who has been working on the same project, each desperately wanting to beat the other. The Rival has done it first, and our hero, devastated from losing to his enemy, takes the gun from his desk, and shoots himself in the head. Thanks to all of you for playing, and the Solid-Gold Silver Star goes to Pandora, for her elegant deathblow. congrats! I am particularly proud of this puzzle, and had a good time running it, so if you liked it let me know. A bit of trivia, the steaks were originally going to be toast, and the device a "reverse toaster". I thought that was too easy, and that meat would be more complicated, and suggest sinister things to yyour imaginations. anyway thanks for puzzling with me |

"so if you liked it let me know" Liked it? Are you kidding me? It STUNK! I am kidding, this was a neat and enjoyable puzzle. The guy who sent the e-mail would have needed to show some proof of time of day or some other way of showing that the steak did indeed go raw-cooked-raw. Otherwise, he could have just taken two pictures of raw steak and one of cooked steak and just put them in an order that would look convincing. Creative and suspenseful - thumbs up! |

Thanks, guys. I may have more like this in the future, if I can think of any. Although I will certainly use your advice, Ixoye, and make sure my future characters have proof before they off themselves |

Just a thought, and something that was creeping around in my brain for the latter part of the puzzle. |
