Are roosters relevant? Chickens? Hens? Farms? Farmers? Eggs? no to all of these.
Is the time of day relevant? Number of people who used the celery relevant? Ages relevant? only that they were older gentlemen guessing thier profession will help you a great deal and where they work.

Assuming the celery did actually work, would it have allowed the people to accomplish a task? Or moreso just keep something working or in place? in place like it should be.

Prior to the attempt at using celery, had something broken or become damaged? no.

Was the celery used as an attempt to repair something?yes, amend something that was not supposed to happen.or make something new?

You said that it's not medical...I was thinking that if you were desperate you could try using celery as a finger splint, but it wouldn't provide the needed support. Is the actual application in which the celery was tried anything similar to this? I said it was not medical because I was thinking that you would think that the celery was used to help someone to live.

Allright, then...

The puzzle includes the phrase 'for lack of anything better' - does this indicate that:
the only choice they had for a stalk-like object was a piece of celery?
there weren't any pencils or other objects nearby that were shaped like a piece of celery?
did their job put them in the proximity of celery?
did one of them have celery on hand?

Are these people doctors? scientists? salesmen? teachers?

Are they employed by the gov't, and it takes 3 of them to watch one of them use the celery?

there weren't any pencils or other objects nearby that were shaped like a piece of celery? no, but then the person who got the celery is not one with nerves of steel let's say.
did their job put them in the proximity of celery? no.
did one of them have celery on hand? no the person went and got it.

Are these people doctors? scientists? salesmen? teachers? no, to all.

Are they employed by the gov't, and it takes 3 of them to watch one of them use the celery? that's a good one.;)

Was the piece of celery to be attached to...
part of a human body?
part of an animal?
part of a machine?
something else?

Does the job these people did include...
working with animals? working with dangerous chemicals? working with children? working in an office setting? research? travel?

Was this happening on earth? in space? on another planet?

After they made the attempt to use the celery for whatever the use was, what was the outcome...
they said "oh well, doesn't work, let's try something else"?
they died?
it worked for a while but then failed?

Were they conducting some kind of experiment?
Did their job require them to wear uniforms? hard hats? suits and ties? bathing suits? some other required clothing items?

When they put the celery stalk to use, was it vertical? horizontal? diagonal?

Was the celery put into something else? like a hole? or receptacle?
Did someone else die as a result of the celery not working correctly?
Were the people using the celery attempting to clean something?
Could the celery be safely eaten after the attempted use?

So the thing that would normally have been used but wasn't available is about the same size as a celery stalk? similar shape?

Had something fallen out of/off of a certain place, and the celery was an attempt at a temporary fix until a replacement part could be found?

Was the celery put into:
an appliance? something electrical? something that moves? something metal? something wooden? something soft? liquid?

going back abit, you said "there weren't any pencils or other objects nearby that were shaped like a piece of celery? no, but then the person who got the celery is not one with nerves of steel let's say. "

So was there something that would probably have worked better than the celery there, but it was dangerous to try to get to it? to get it?

Did they really expect the celery to work? or were they hoping that it would? were they surprised that it didn't?

They work with dangerous chemicals at times; and wear a certain kind of hat, but not a hard hat; and are well-educated in their field. Are the hats to protect them? or to keep their hair out of what they work with? Do they work in a laboratory of some type? a machine shop?

A two-legged mammal? There's pretty much only one version of that...

Were they hoping to hold its mouth open? Use it as a tongue depressor?

Are the persons manipulating the celery human?
