Were any of these in the question or the conversation: death? burial? resurrection? cremation? reincarnation? church? heaven? hell? purgatory? God's existence? an attribute of God?
Did you ask if she believed something? didn't believe something?

Is the question related to prayer? Saying Grace? A particular manner or method of prayer? A specific prayer (e.g. Nicene Creed) or a prayer to a specific being (God or saint, etc.)?

So, are any of these the question, or close?
"Do you believe in God?"
"Do you know God (personally)?"
"Have you ever heard God? seen God?"
"Were you brought up to believe in God?"
"Have you always believed in God?"
If none of these are close, is there one of these that is closest to being correct?

Free will relevant? The idea that there is a higher power making decisions about what will happen?

Has it been asked if an afterlife belief is relevant?

Did you ask if she had been a member of the religion since she was born? But it is impossible for a newborn baby to be a (full?) member of her religion? (Sorry if this doesn't fit with the above - I'm pretty ignorant about religious practices!)

Was she offended because she thought you were implying that her parents should have given her a choice of whether to follow the religion?

Did your question indicate a misconception you had of her religion? Could you have offended her in the same way by making a statement, rather than asking a question?

did you ask if she had been born as a 'member' of her denomination?

it seems that being a 'catholic' wouldn't work for this puzzle - is that correct? do you mean Roman catholicism? if so - the relevant feature of this denomination - its attitude to contraception? its attitude to the priesthood? its attitude to Mary?
