So, it's something connected with flying balloons that's also useful in another context? hot air? burners? lighter-than-air gas? balloon silk?

Are we looking for a material? a "procedure"? an instrument? something else tangible? that which the balloonist did primarily involved "materials" in the sense of "fabrics". That which OH did involved material things, including but not limited to fabrics. What he did might also involve an "instrument", for svv of that term. No intangibles, other than gratitude, are involved in this puzzle.

Did that which the balloonist did have to do with weaving? dyeing? sewing? Did it have to do with different materials out of which fabric might be made? Did the balloonist invent a type of fabric?

Did the balloonist make his own balloon? Did he make anything else relevant out of fabric? Did the balloonist make an important contribution to the art of balloon-making? Did he apply some principle of balloon-making to making other things out of fabric?

These other things made of fabric: are they usually made of fabric? or are they usually made of some other material?
Clothes? curtains? bed linens? other of what you might call "soft furnishings"? furniture? parachutes? ships' sails? sporting equipment? bags? other containers? other functional items? decorative items?

If it hadn't been for the balloonist, would OH have been injured? killed?

Did OH wear such a hat? Did he sell such hats?

Because of the balloonist's contribution to hatmaking, did something good happen to OH? was something bad prevented from happening? Something related to money? fame? health? leather jackets?
