A man lies dead on the ground. Bits of wood surround the body. The man who killed him died many years ago. |

Bits of wood: the fragments of a wooden coffin? Did the man lying dead on the ground also die many years ago? |

Ok, I just thought I'd ask Bits of wood: pieces of a tree? or tree branches? of boards? of sheet lumber? firewood? DeadGuy: freshly dead? in the last few minutes? hours? Not so fresh? a few days? a week? more than a week? Apparent cause of death: Something bloody? stabbing? bludgeoning? gunshot? Not bloody? trampled to death by a herd of golden retriever puppies who only wanted to play? suffocated? poisoned? garrotted? |

Did the dead man intend to kill him? relevant? Is the corpse/remains of the dead man relevant? Was he shot with the dead mans gun? Was there a booby trap? Had something fallen from a tree? The man (freshly dead) might be called Marmaduke okay? Did the gun belong to Marmaduke? |

Did Marmaduke know the long-dead man (to be further referred to as LDM)? Did LDM? Was Marmaduke alive when LDM died? Did LDM 'plant' the gun there? intending someone (maybe not necessarily Marmaduke) to die? Did LDM kill him by action (e.g. planting the gun)? or by inaction (e.g. not removing the gun when he knew it would kill Marmaduke)? |

Did LDm plan the murder to take place after his death? Or did he plan to commit it when he was still alive? |

You mean he wasn't just pining for the fijords? Ok, then. Had Marmaduke shot himself? Because of something LDM had done? had deliberately left undone? Had someone else (not Marm himself, and not LDM) shot Marmaduke because of something LDM had done? Had deliberately not done? |

Is there anything supernatural here? Is time travel relevant? Is the type of gun relevant? Is there anybody visible (apart from the corpse) at the scene of the crime? Is it worth exploring anything about LDM? e.g. His motive / his whereabouts? |
